This was sloppy password management.
People are willingly doing this....

putting cameras in their whole house, as their doorbell, all connected to the internet. Alexas in every room.

They put any and every aspect of their lives on Facebook, Instagram, etc....

All people have to do is stop.
Stop buying.

Home automation and security are good things if done right. You really need to keep all your IOT devices on a separate network/VLAN and limit/control access to the internet.

I read an article today that young adults 24 and younger right now are responding to survey's that they are lonely on a weekly basis considerably more than any other age.

They also say the connection to technology and loneliness is incomplete because that same demographic says that using technology helps them avoid feeling lonely.

It actually reminds me very much of a Chris Stapleton song in which he says:

I drink because I'm lonely, and I'm lonely because I drink
