and/or wanted him gone at the end of the year due to salary, making "business decisions" during plays, is there a big difference between doing it now and doing it then?
I think he would have been cut after the season anyway, so I'm not all torn up about doing it now after what transpired this week. I'm sure there were other things that went on during the season that we are not fully aware of and this was the final nail in the coffin.
we have a guy like DG who can identify all the bad guys and ship them out! It's pretty crazy how we've had so many of these problem players on the roster! What are the odds?
well that's just ... I guess I shouldn't say it. No surprise - this is the same organization that passed on Tunsil despite massive need at OT for partaking in something that 95%+ NFL players do. What a joke.
For all the talk about culture, Janoris Jenkins was always the guy
who should never have passed the filter. He flies under the radar because he's not as famous, but his social media was wild. Far worse than anything the disturbed individuals who policed odell beckham's instgram ever pretended to be outraged by.
It's the right move, just feels like this should have been done during the trade deadline. We knew he wouldn't be here next year.
^This. He wasn't going to be here next year, and we were already out of contention by the trade deadline, so why not trade him? They apparently also refused to listen to trade offers for Engram. The Giants are extremely stubborn.
More outstanding roster management by Mr. Magoo. Could have traded him long ago but, no, let's release him because of a mildly bad thing he said on Twitter.
Ripped for starting a thread on how Jenkins wasnt a high character guy. He was kicked off a university of Florida team that was ok with Aaron Hernandez, seems like I might have been right
Jackrabbit wasnt in the plans for 2020 anyway. Why not move him at the deadline for draft pick(s)?
Gettleman continues to show he has no idea that draft capital is the #1 tool for a rebuilding club. Releasing players that could have netted picks is almost as bad as trading picks for veterans or bundling picks to move up in the draft.
This is independent of whether the players picked were the correct players as well.
... not sure they'll be an appreciation thread but I, for one, enjoyed his Giants tenure. Sure he had flaws, but he was one of the best cover corners we've had in the last ten years.
If we thought the back-end of the defense was bad before, we ain't seen nothing yet.
He was a high salary, low performance player who simply became more trouble than he's worth for a team playing out the stretch of another dead season.
I don't think anyone believes the comments are the sole reason. But put them with his total lack of apology for it, and his calling out the coaching staff and that was that.
I'm curious though. Can he be picked up at this point by a playoff team? I don't believe so.

He's sailed under the radar most of his career for that.
He's absolutely done taking shit -- from ANYONE, including stupid fans -- for a shit, losing team. I wish him well and hope he signs on with a winner.
Obviously, if the Giants were in the playoff hunt, they wouldn't have moved him over this, and also obvious, they should have moved him at the trade deadline.
But if you think he has been giving 100% effort on the field you are high.
How does that effect his trade value? We don't know for sure. The twitter stuff is just icing on the cake, added to his outspoken stuff about the DC not letting him go with the best WR.
He probably wasn't going to be back next year with his salary.
This is addition by subtraction. Young kids will get more PT for better or worse.
maybe he WAS part of the plan in 2020?? then he called a fan(you know someone who brings in rev for giants) a retard and doesnt apologize. he is childish as shit. my only issue with this is, how did we not know sooner he was a pain in the ass? he clearly is a malcontent

He got popped for misdemeanor marijuana possession, what a piece of shit!
I guess it doesn't matter if he was going to get released after the season anyway. But for Shurmur to say it was because of some Twitter spat...this is insane. Further, the NJ.com piece by Darryl Slater is embarrassing. You are a pussy, Slater.
He's still playing well and provided a veteran presence at corner.
exactly my thought. he probably was, but then he acts like a jerkoff and calls someone retarded and doesnt apologize or see how its ignorant so giants were like okay bye, we dont need that.

We do save about $11 million on the cap with only $3.5m dead money. You can bring him back at his level of play for the $14.5m or so, but releasing him probably always made more sense given the investment in young players at the position.

This won't be a popular take, but I had no problem with Jenkins' explanation. He said that's how he talks to his homeboys. He said he shouldn't have said, but that's how he talks. That answer wasn't good enough for the PC Twitter crowd looking for penance. He didn't give it them.
Good thing we didn't trade him when we had the chance
the lockerroom. I mean we don't have anymore veteran good players, but if they did its pretty obvious if we suck you can just start causing problems and you'll get rewarded going to a playoff team.
there better be something behind the scenes we don't know about
or this better have some major cap benefits - not that we necessarily need it given the space we have. this particular word has been way to sensitized. if not, wow.
but honestly I have never gotten over the game he basically quit on us against SF in 2017. It was one of the most disgraceful performances I had ever seen by a person wearing a Giants jersey. But again, he should have been traded earlier this year so this is a colossal screwup.

His instagram is pretty tame. What are you referring to?
and so it ends for the great 2016 free agent class

sucks, figured he would still be on team next year.

You beat me to it...classic Pats move.
I'm thinking Seattle too.
Total clown show in the Meadowlands.
Here, here to that

Were going to suck forever.
Spags in KC.

It's obvious - a 4th and 6th for Ogletree, a 3rd and 4th for Williams.
The Giants hate draft picks.
If anyone knows, please share

Why wasn't he traded prior to the deadline? Were there no offers?
Dr. Zaius: Don't look for it, Taylor. You may not like what you'll find.
Ha Ha! Love this answer on both the literal as well as pop-culture levels.

This is what the problem is

Because who needs draft picks, right?
This is not an accomplishment.

just about a tweet - you're undoubtedly wrong

Except the head coach just said it was the reason. So there's that.

Should have traded him for whatever pick they could have gotten before the deadline.
Maybe no one was interested.
