and I just remember him being in regular rotation in Madonna's Papa Don't Preach video.
And apparently he hated it, haha

“You know, that came about in a very strange way,” Danny explains. “I had no idea who [Madonna] was, so I said to [daughter] Stacey in passing, ‘They want me to do this music video with this girl named Madonna.’She said, ‘Dad, Dad, you have to.’ I went back and said I’ll do it if my daughter is permitted on the set taking pictures with Madonna. ... Madonna sort of backed up and told her representative that I don’t do that. My daughter has hated her ever since. ... I’m a movie actor doing this piece of crap!”
One of my favorite character actors. Loved him in 29th Street

First saw him years ago on Broadway in the play Gemini. He was great in 29th Street, Moonstruck and remember his character throwing someone off a roof in Fort Apache The Bronx. He will be missed

He's Michael Kay's uncle and he always talks about him all the time. He seemed like a very genuine person. Loved Do The Right Thing.
I briefly met him in a social setting
Mike from SI : 12/13/2019 11:30 am : link
and he was really nice to me. Also I used to eat a lot in the Dinner Rush restaurant in Tribeca because it was like 2 blocks from my place. RIP.

The Professional. This thread also gives me comfort because I thought I was the only male who loved Moonstruck.
For me, he's ALWAYS SAL...

...Do the Right Thing is a fantastic film, an important film - made it a point to show all 3 of my sons when they came of age, nails racist culture on the head from all angles, and Danny Aiello is FANTASTIC in that film.
RIP
MadPlaid : 12/13/2019 12:24 pm : link
Terrific actor. Very commanding presence. I just read an article about him. Apparently, Aiello, while on the set of Robert Altman’s Ready to Wear, told Lauren Bacall to “Go fuck yourself!” After she told him to shut up while he was practicing his lines. That’s hilarious. Imagine the gumption to tell off a Hollywood legend like that. It fits with him.

He was great in Moonstruck and Do the Right Thing.
Who can forget Hudson Hawk?

I don't know why that is always the first movie that comes to mind when I think of Aiello.

'Aiello is perhaps best known for his role as pizzeria owner Sal in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing (1989). At the time of the film's release, in an interview with the Chicago Tribune, he called the role his "first focal part". He further identified the film as a very collaborative effort, during which Spike Lee at one point told him "Whatever you wanna do, you do." Aiello went on to write a crucial scene he shared with John Turturro ten minutes prior to its production.'

I would not have guessed he was 86. He had a long and interesting life.
