I have been critical of Raanan for the way he covers the team but the more I listen to his podcast the more I have come to appreciate him. He seems to have interesting “insider” tidbits that he discovers by covering the team that he shares with his listeners. Not dissimilar to the BBI asshats, I have no idea if any of these tidbits are true, but since we root for and religiously follow a bad team, I appreciate anything that piques my interest.
In one of his recent podcasts he referenced Chris Maras role as it pertains to scouting. He said that dating back to the Reese years the team almost had two separate factions at the Senior Bowl that did not work in unison. There was the scouting faction - led by Reese and another ownership faction led by Mara. This led to differences of opinion on player evaluation, which obviously isn’t conducive to success. An example of a player that Chris Mara loves and insisted on was davis webb, who obviously didn’t work out. I just found this supposed discord to be interesting and if true a big red flag.
If Tisch is serious about making changes is there any hope that Chris Maras role could be discussed with any (hopefully) forthcoming changes to the front office/coaching staff? He has no qualifications as it pertains to working in an NFL front office and making personnel decisions for the team other than hitting the generic lottery and being born Wellington Maras kid. Like most I just want to see the team get better.
Honestly, hard to fault the logic.
He had the strongest last name as well as the checkbook...
This is the issue: a Mara will never be shown the door.
How many other bad picks were and continue to be Mara's?
except when that man is part of the ownership team. Then it just makes for high potential for dysfunction.
A full independent study needs to be made on player choices and which advocate has been most successful. Unfortunately, that's tough to do. I doubt there's a formal ballot on record, so people beholden to the Maras for a paycheck are going to shade things in the best possible light for them.
This is the problem. Is someone going to honestly challenge Chris Mara?

convincing the room to take Davis Webb in the 3rd round or the strongest last name?

Exactly. At that point Mara is the GM, not Reese.
I also suspect it's partly the squeaky wheel. He is not my favourite but IMO he's OK. I doubt most of us would post "Raanan, he'k not bad" unbidden.
The ensuing conversation went something like this...
Exec: Why are you still upset? We got Barber.
Scout: Yeah, but the wrong guy is gonna get the money.
Except it's not true.
From Giants.com "Chris Mara joined the Giants as Vice President of Player Evaluation on July 29, 2003." The 2011 promotion was a title change not a job change.

Forgot about that nugget...
Remember in either the ‘98 or ‘99 draft and Fassel did an interview with ESPN. He looked like he had just spent hours in negotiations with hostage takers who had his son. Just emotionally drained. There were reports about draft room dissension wide receivers and no one could get on the same page. Or something like that. Certainly didn’t give the best impression of the goings on inside Jints Central...
people didn't like graziano because he was the same way.
people on this board get very sensitive to those who rip eli and rip the giants. guess what. those people that have been ripping them have been right for years. it's time people come to grips with that
jordan has consistently given out excellent information over the years
Quote:
They want "differences of opinion" on player evaluation. And they want people working separately to assure originality of thought (rather than easily falling into group think). That's been their philosophy since the days of George Young and Tom Boisture. Let everyone have their say and whoever presents the strongest argument gets his man. It's made for some pretty heated arguments on draft day. Reeves complained that he'd never before worked in such a combative environment.
Honestly, hard to fault the logic.
The logic is not the problem. Having two separate opinions as a check to group think is good. But when one group is led by the family that owns the team and decides who on the other team keeps their jobs? That is a major flaw. Add to it that the person leading the stronger group also has no expertise in the subject matter, and that is completely counterproductive.
That structure as described means the least competent person carries the most clout. That does explain a lot about the Giants draft futility.
I also suspect it's partly the squeaky wheel. He is not my favourite but IMO he's OK. I doubt most of us would post "Raanan, he'k not bad" unbidden.
Raanan is not only critical now, when things are obviously in the toilet, but he has the nerve to also be critical BEFORE things go bad, and that rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Some dont like predictions of doom and gloom to mess with their hope. Anything negative, and its pretty much kill the messenger. And a lot of times, that messenger is Ranaan because he doesnt hold back when he has a negative opinion of something Giants related.
WE have gone thru multiple HCs and GMs
and yet Chris Mara STILL HAS A JOB!
until he is removed - Giants will be a terrible team.
If you have ever worked for any type of family owned company whether public or private....having any relation to ownership at the top is sometimes a huge issue.
From a pure personnel standpoint, he should be fired as 2011-now has been a train wreck from a pure draft perspective. Just look at it!!! Engram is our last first rounder and we know where that is going
Until this guy is removed we will continue to struggle with this team from a personnel perspective. I am guessing only that DG's voice is a bit louder and he is not being held down as much with Chris Mara.
But from the outside , based on just the pure personnel decisions from 2011-now, this dude needs to go.
kill the nepotism
Here is the verbatim transcription of what he said:
"My first hint that there might be something wrong here was, I go to the senior bowl that year (2013). At the senior bowl, there's a bunch of scout, ok, so on one side of the stadium there's Jerry Reese, GM, and his crew. And on the other side of the stadium there's Chris Mara. Chris Mara, by the way, is the VP of player evaluation and he's on the other side of the stadium with other people, and it was almost looked like the Giants had two different personnel groups, like that was my perception, like what? And then you come to realize that Chris Mara is essentially...so there's the GM at the time, there's Jerry Reese, ok, at the top of the totem pole. And, then, to me, sits Chris Mara, above the assistant GM who is Kevin Abrams, and then marc ross at the time, he's below them, he's the ugh, VP of player personnel.
But right below jerry reese, above the assistant GM, and the VP of player personnel, is Chris mara, John's brother..has a football background, but you realize, that's OWNERSHIP, OWnership, being involved in personnel decisions, which is tricky, always tricky. And I believe Chris and John have a nephew who is also there...obviously not as a big a role. Here's why it's tricky, ok, you wonder, is that really the way you should be operating? This is what you made fun of the dallas cowboys, for having ownership make personnel decisions. Because the reality is that Chris Mara owns the team, just as much as John, all their siblings do....They're all owners, they all own half the team together...so, the reason John mara didn't originally wanna hire chris as the Gm was because you CANT FIRE FAMILY, right...But now, they could be rolling through another GM, their second one in four years, if they do change, this will be their third in four years... But then, Chris mara would still be in there. And obviously, some of these personnel decisions he's involved in..."
So, since you called me out, are you lying, defending ownership, or did you misremember?
Ooof that’s a heavy indictment. Mehta is brutal. I’d give raanan more credit than that.
