Firing HCs halfway through the season is just trashy. Giants and every team explore back channels constantly. It’s why teams don’t fire HCs midway through very often unless they want to salvage the season. You think firing shurmur December 1st gives the giants some leg up on a trashy do things at all cost franchise like Dallas or the skins? Think again.

The claims that Rhule wants personnel control is nothing but speculation. Here is what is known:

- Rhule interviewed with the Jets last year.
- The Jets were down to Rhule, McCarthy, and Gase
- The Jets also wanted Williams to be DC and there is ample evidence to suggest a framework of a deal was already in place.
- Jets offered Rhule the job on the condition that he not have full control over selection of his assistant coaches (this has been documented in several reports since last Jan)
- Rhule turned down the Jets conditional offer (can’t blame him)
- When asked on a radio show why he turned the Jets down, Rhule answered that he wanted no part of “an arranged marriage.”

I think folks are reading into the Rhule wants control statements. The direct object of that statement is either usually left out, or is inferred (usually by folks who think DG should go). I will say this. If Rhule wants personnel, good luck finding an organization who is willing to do that for a first time NFL HC, who’s never won a National Title in college.

+1. There will be program control requirements from most candidates these days. They will vary by person and situation. It's become almost SOP and the Giants must adapt to it if they want to compete for the best coaches. I think they will now due to realization of this trend and need to dip into the deep end of the coaching pool.

This is from a discussion on another thread...

Ideally we hire Rhule and retain DG in a modified GM role.
where Rhule has personnel control working with Abrams as his cap guru while DG oversees scouting, pro personnel and the day to day operations. This suggested re-structure gives the coaches what they are asking for. Roster control. No candidate being discussed for the Giants has gotten so specific in their requirements to disqualify this proposal.

These guys don't want to deal with all the day to day BS. They want football control. They would be in charge. All teams have a cap manager that works with the HC and GM. DG would work to scout and acquire players based on the coaches vision. All teams have these departments as well working with the HC.

The football support departments don't suddenly disappear because they hired a HC that sets the program agenda and has ultimate authority.

Reason to Keep Gettleman and Not Shurmur
Samiam : 12/29/2019 2:06 pm : link
Gettleman is coming off a terrific draft and seems to have nailed the #1 question in Jones. Now, granted at this time last year, we thought the 2018 was a great draft which has not materialized this year with subpar performances by Hernandez, Hill and Carter. But 2019:looks fine.

With Shurmur, there are only 2 reasons to keep him. He’s done well with Jones and the team plays hard for him. His negatives vastly outweigh these 2 reason. I wonder if they’ll bring in somebody as HC who wants more authority in decision making but who will take a backseat to Gettleman with the understanding that he’ll retire next year

not that I want to keep shurmur but isn't your number one reason that you want ot keep DG should also be in support of shurmur. Jones has played very well. So how can that be a positive to keep DG around but not big enough to keep Shurmur?

DG gets the credit for identifying jones ability when most others werent feeling it.
shumur gets some credit for helping him develop but his clock management and challenge usage completely wipes out his positive with jones. CONS outweigh the PROS in this case

EVERY week 17 Glazer goes on the air and lists who he thinks is out and who he thinks stays.

EVERY person in the media has speculated for weeks that Shurmur is gone at the end of the season.

So some dupe troll comes on BBI and tells us all that Glazer will make the announcement about Shurmur on the air today and we treat it likes it’s breaking news and this troll has inside info.

Successfully backing movie projects when your family has billions doesn’t scream super successful except when compared to the Mara’s who have been abject failures except when forced to hire Young, and Acorsi did enough to keep it going. Once they got back in charge a circus monkey looks savvy and brilliant comparably
Here's Tisch's recent comment:
3putt : 12/29/2019 8:05 pm : link
It’s been a very frustrating season,” Tisch said. “At the end of the season John Mara and I are gonna get together and discuss the future. As partners we have to be very honest with each other about where we see this team going into the 2020 season.”

There's been a lot of interpretation of that statement. A lot of BBIers read it say Tisch wants to tear it all down. Could be, or maybe it's what they do every year.
