...he said he thinks he's going to be out... I don't disagree it's a likely hood its going to happen. But the last few years he appeared to have much more conviction and it almost sounds like he doesn't have quite the info he wishes he had and doesn't want to risk being wrong
I really believe this is the right move. Lets see what they do with the coaching staff now. Dave Gettleman did his job these past few years and he does not deserve to be fired. He did his job to bring talent on the team and clear cap space. Thats what he is supposed to do. Its not his fault that he has a lousy coach that cannot utilize Saquon Barkley appropriately or make good play calling to get the team in a better position to win.
Shurmur and Gettleman. Didn't necessarily report either was staying or going.
Huh?
Not sure where the rest of it went, but Glazer said he "thinks" and "feels" in regards to Shurmur and DG. Wasn't really a definitive "I have info" report.

Exactly how? The winning streak Shurmur has put together? The good work Jones has done courtesy of Shurmur's handy work?
So Jones was only a good pick because of Shurmur? HUH?
If Jones work out over the long run, I have no problem giving Gettleman credit for the pick. Time will tell there.
For now, Shurmur gets the credit for the Jones hitting the ground running and his output.
But back to Glazer's quote, what has Gettleman done to save his job? I found that very curious. Maybe it was a poor choice of words, but what do you think?

Glazer always says he does not give his opinion until he has concrete info, same with the Beckham trade last year. He would not be saying this without solid info.
... firing only Shurmur makes sense if (and only if) the decisions include a real, multi-year roadmap. If Gettleman stays, ownership either needs to commit to him for at least two-three years, or there has to be a post-Gettleman plan, whether its Abrams, Rhule expanding his role after establishing himself, or whatever.
My issue is that it would be moronic for the Giants to restrict their coaching prospects because they're married to the idea of keeping Gettleman. If they don't allow themselves to look at a wide-open, unfettered list of HC candidates, then what's the purpose of firing Shurmur?
or fire both. Those are the only two options. Anything in between and John Mara deserves the Giants to suck for another 5 years.
Why? Clearly not the only choice. Shurmur needs to go. Just too many bad in game decisions. The players like playing for him, but there just doesn't seem to be improvement in the players or his decisions.
Gettleman - yeah some truly bad FA choices and head scratchers. And then he has some good ones. His draft picks are better than pretty good IMV. I like that he cuts bait quickly. I like that he recognizes that the way to win is through the big guys up front and he has tried to get better. I think he'll continue to improve there.

If when they fire Shurmur and hire whoever they will put out some document with a succession plan from DG to Kevin Abrams or that they make DG bring in a younger football guy to groom. Like when Young hired Ernie.

Honestly this would be the preferred route. Rhule hasn't done anything to ask for total control, but demand seems high for him and might be the only way to get him.
It seems more of his issue was control over coaching staff. He has ties to Coughlin, Bicknell and Gettlemans last year here before going to Carolina was Matt Rhules year here. Wouldnt be surprised if he was fine with Gettleman.

You think firing shurmur December 1st gives the giants some leg up on a trashy do things at all cost franchise like Dallas or the skins? Think again.
It's a bit of a misconception that Rhule would necessarily want full
control of personnel. His issue with the Jets wasn't full control of player personnel it was control over his own staff, and even then he was supposedly willing to meet with the Jets preferred candidates to see if there was any chemistry.

The claims that Rhule wants personnel control is nothing but speculation. Here is what is known:
- Rhule interviewed with the Jets last year.
- The Jets were down to Rhule, McCarthy, and Gase
- The Jets also wanted Williams to be DC and there is ample evidence to suggest a framework of a deal was already in place.
- Jets offered Rhule the job on the condition that he not have full control over selection of his assistant coaches (this has been documented in several reports since last Jan)
- Rhule turned down the Jets conditional offer (cant blame him)
- When asked on a radio show why he turned the Jets down, Rhule answered that he wanted no part of an arranged marriage.
I think folks are reading into the Rhule wants control statements. The direct object of that statement is either usually left out, or is inferred (usually by folks who think DG should go). I will say this. If Rhule wants personnel, good luck finding an organization who is willing to do that for a first time NFL HC, whos never won a National Title in college.

+1. There will be program control requirements from most candidates these days. They will vary by person and situation. It's become almost SOP and the Giants must adapt to it if they want to compete for the best coaches. I think they will now due to realization of this trend and need to dip into the deep end of the coaching pool.
This is from a discussion on another thread...
Ideally we hire Rhule and retain DG in a modified GM role.
where Rhule has personnel control working with Abrams as his cap guru while DG oversees scouting, pro personnel and the day to day operations. This suggested re-structure gives the coaches what they are asking for. Roster control. No candidate being discussed for the Giants has gotten so specific in their requirements to disqualify this proposal.
These guys don't want to deal with all the day to day BS. They want football control. They would be in charge. All teams have a cap manager that works with the HC and GM. DG would work to scout and acquire players based on the coaches vision. All teams have these departments as well working with the HC.
The football support departments don't suddenly disappear because they hired a HC that sets the program agenda and has ultimate authority.
Gettleman is coming off a terrific draft and seems to have nailed the #1 question in Jones. Now, granted at this time last year, we thought the 2018 was a great draft which has not materialized this year with subpar performances by Hernandez, Hill and Carter. But 2019:looks fine.
With Shurmur, there are only 2 reasons to keep him. Hes done well with Jones and the team plays hard for him. His negatives vastly outweigh these 2 reason. I wonder if theyll bring in somebody as HC who wants more authority in decision making but who will take a backseat to Gettleman with the understanding that hell retire next year

not that I want to keep shurmur but isn't your number one reason that you want ot keep DG should also be in support of shurmur. Jones has played very well. So how can that be a positive to keep DG around but not big enough to keep Shurmur?

DG gets the credit for identifying jones ability when most others werent feeling it.
shumur gets some credit for helping him develop but his clock management and challenge usage completely wipes out his positive with jones. CONS outweigh the PROS in this case

only someone vying for attention would be so specific as to say who would report knowing it would give them credibility. If he actually had inside info he wouldn't bother with who would report it because who cares?
Own the team, he will do what he is told. Tisch is not a schmuck, hes a successful film producer. More accomplishments than the Mara family put together .
Successfully backing movie projects when your family has billions doesnt scream super successful except when compared to the Maras who have been abject failures except when forced to hire Young, and Acorsi did enough to keep it going. Once they got back in charge a circus monkey looks savvy and brilliant comparably
Its been a very frustrating season, Tisch said. At the end of the season John Mara and I are gonna get together and discuss the future. As partners we have to be very honest with each other about where we see this team going into the 2020 season.
There's been a lot of interpretation of that statement. A lot of BBIers read it say Tisch wants to tear it all down. Could be, or maybe it's what they do every year.
Wonder if DG will answer the phone on draft day.

We couldve fired this bum Shurmur last month and got a head start on the coaching search, but that isnt the Giant way 😂😂😂😂😂. This organization is a dumpster fire.
Firing HCs halfway through the season is just trashy. Giants and every team explore back channels constantly. Its why teams dont fire HCs midway through very often unless they want to salvage the season. You think firing shurmur December 1st gives the giants some leg up on a trashy do things at all cost franchise like Dallas or the skins? Think again.
That's right!

As usual.... fucking exhausting.....Mcadoo situation was a crisis. Shurmur was bad but he never lost the locker room like mcadoo did. Thats one of the very few exceptions that of course you need to be explained. Troll.

The same dude who was citing Incarcerated Bob as some kind of insider?
he's jtgiants. the same guy who stated definitively last year that the giants were going defense w the #6 pick, and definitely weren't drafting a quarterback.
he's useless. and now he's here with 'i told you so' posts.
dude is mentally unhinged
Incorrect.
But but it save them giving up a comp pick
Yup
With Shurmur, there are only 2 reasons to keep him. Hes done well with Jones and the team plays hard for him. His negatives vastly outweigh these 2 reason. I wonder if theyll bring in somebody as HC who wants more authority in decision making but who will take a backseat to Gettleman with the understanding that hell retire next year

Stop this bull....The Td Maker told us this when it was only being discussed. Give him the credit due him.
Thank you TD Maker!

not that I want to keep shurmur but isn't your number one reason that you want ot keep DG should also be in support of shurmur. Jones has played very well. So how can that be a positive to keep DG around but not big enough to keep Shurmur?

Gettleman is coming off a terrific draft and seems to have nailed the #1 question in Jones. Now, granted at this time last year, we thought the 2018 was a great draft which has not materialized this year with subpar performances by Hernandez, Hill and Carter. But 2019:looks fine.

DG gets the credit for identifying jones ability when most others werent feeling it.
shumur gets some credit for helping him develop but his clock management and challenge usage completely wipes out his positive with jones. CONS outweigh the PROS in this case

Singing the Giants praises.
He's really angling for the Giants HC position.
Id take him as d coordinator not head coach

Agreed.

EVERY week 17 Glazer goes on the air and lists who he thinks is out and who he thinks stays.
EVERY person in the media has speculated for weeks that Shurmur is gone at the end of the season.
So some dupe troll comes on BBI and tells us all that Glazer will make the announcement about Shurmur on the air today and we treat it likes its breaking news and this troll has inside info.
Classic BBI
Shurmur was a head coach before.

Thank you. This is the exact playbook jtgiants used to dupe most of this board last year.
Easy, then. Email Eric, ask him not to disclose the new coach until it's confirmed. Then, claim the ring!

Exactly, there is no Rhyme or Rheason he cant leave a marker.

JohnF throwin down the challenge flag.
Righteous call.
Successfully backing movie projects when your family has billions doesnt scream super successful except when compared to the Maras who have been abject failures except when forced to hire Young, and Acorsi did enough to keep it going. Once they got back in charge a circus monkey looks savvy and brilliant comparably
There's been a lot of interpretation of that statement. A lot of BBIers read it say Tisch wants to tear it all down. Could be, or maybe it's what they do every year.
