WR Golden Tate III - Cut or Keep?

"The PED suspension voids the guarantee of Tate’s $7.9mm 2020
cosmicj : 10:46 pm : link : reply
Base salary. If the Giants release him, they will incur a $7.5mm dead cap hit regardless of that void. So the two options are:

1) cut him in 2020 and incur a dead cap hit of $7.5mm vs
2) retaining him which would result in a cap cost of $10.5mm and a further $5.0mm dead cap hit if he were released in 2021.

The way to look at is that Tate costs the team $8mm to be on the team in 2020, over the long term. I am skeptical he is worth it, given we are rebuilding.

This is yet another bad contract which Gettleman approved. Every time I start looking at the details of these vet contracts he has entered into, I am more and more convinced he can’t be allowed to run this upcoming free agency period."

He is a guy that will not age much from a WR standpoint. He is a very important player for Daniel Jones as he is very reliable. I see him as someone you keep for the next few years.

Have to also have protection against a potential Sterling Shepherd retirement.

He's a solid receiver who plays bigger than his size. Gets separation and is a solid run blocker downfield. Plus I never want to see the JAGs we were trotting out there earlier in the season again.
Who are you going to replace
allstarjim : 12/29/2019 11:47 pm : link
Him with?

This isn't a deep pool of talent at this position, and if you make a splash in free agency on a guy then Tate still makes sense because he's a better #2 than he is leading man.

The money isn't terrible. Overall I'd look to develop a draft pick from the middle rounds.
Keep!! We need more ballers like Golden Tate
geelabee : 12/29/2019 11:48 pm : link
The dude put up outstanding # almost 700 yards and 6 TD...made tough seemed like every game...and a plethora of highlight real catches and explosive plays...after being suspended 4 games and missing 2 1/2 due to injury...anyone that think he should be cut is an idiot...Giants need more good football players like Tate...if you cut Tate you have to replace his production...
if you cut him who are you replacing him with?
GiantsFan84 : 12/29/2019 11:50 pm : link
maybe get Perriman in FA? he might be a reasonable cost. but if that's the option why not just keep tate for one more year and draft a replacement?

his cap cost is not going to prevent the giants from signing who they want.

what this team needs to really do, is come up with a blueprint and positional value. i personally don't like spending premium $ at WR. i think it's a complimentary position. get a good OL, TE, QB and a running game and just keep replenishing the position with draft picks when contracts are about to run out.

so my preference is to keep tate one more year then replace him with a draft pick
Bye bye

Cut
Part of the issue
AdamBrag : 12/30/2019 12:38 am : link
is that Kevin Abrams, our "cap guru" is structuring bad contracts. $5m in dead cap to cut a player is pretty painful. He's not an easy cut until 2022.

With that said, Tate is a good player. I don't see a reason to cut him.
Keep
giantstock : 12/30/2019 1:42 am : link
But another example of wasted resources.

Long-term how does he help this team? He doesn't.

Money would've been wiser spent on getting a young OLineman.
It doesn't matter who you replace him with
BH28 : 12/30/2019 3:05 am : link
He was a win now signing, he's not part of the long term solution for when this team will be competitive again. Rather deal with the cap hit next rather than 2021.

Giants need a couple of big body receivers to pair with Slayton and Shepard.

Actually a tough choice.
section125 : 12/30/2019 7:08 am : link
He will drop an easy catch, then make a few tough contested catches.
He also returns punts and kickoffs.

Had you asked me after the 1st qtr I would have cut him. But he made the flip over catch and the TD on a contested ball.

Tough, hard nosed player, usually reliable. I keep him.
So funny watching people here say "cut"..
EricJ : 12/30/2019 7:12 am : link
without us having signed a suitable replacement. I would not even trust some of you with my fantasy team.

I'd keep him. He's a good not great receiver. He's overpaid, but so
Ira : 12/30/2019 7:34 am : link
are most free agents. If we cut him, we have to replace him. From your numbers keeping him only costs $3m more than cutting him.
Shephard has concussion issues... I'd keep Tate
GloryDayz : 12/30/2019 7:35 am : link
Cant keep cutting players & carrying the dead money, adding more holes to fill on the roster. He's decent, keep him.
keep him
hassan : 12/30/2019 7:41 am : link
great slot and second option. need to keep daniel jones progressing; slayton and a wr prospect and engram hopefully stays on field next year which improves nyg offense.

The guy id move on from is shepard. that was not a good signing. Tate is the better of the two and they are a bit redundant.
He is a Keeper!
DannyBoy : 12/30/2019 7:55 am : link
Need to build a team and outside that, the guy plays hard, great possession receiver, solid hands, etc.

Keep
Simms : 12/30/2019 8:07 am : link
But also displays even with cap money the Giants will kick the can.
Keep. He is tough.
Blue21 : 12/30/2019 8:09 am : link
Never quits. Even at the end of the game yesterday he was making tough catches across the middle.

A solid receiver yes, but he gets literally ZERO separation, like to keep at lower cost.

this is a weird post. I know you like to be critical of other posters, but this one is strange because that isn't usually how cap casualties work. When a player costs more on the cap than they're worth, often times they are cut before a replacement is signed. So often you need to make that decision (cut or keep) before you can even sign a replacement.

and it's irrelevant to be honest. the Giants traded Beckham with no replacement (Tate was signed after Beckham was traded). traded Vernon with no replacement, traded JPP with no replacement, etc. not to mention cap cuts.

that's how the NFL works. You sometimes make personnel decisions before you find a replacement.

This team is paper thin talent wise. We need players more than cap room.
I'd keep

not a good signing, IMO. But they need warm bodies and Tate is a guy who can hopefully provide some continuity and reliability for Jones. No sense eating $7.5M of dead money just to further deplete NFL-caliber roster depth.

Can’t win with WRs that don’t get separation. Spend the money on an established X WR
