Boatie Warrant : 1/9/2020 3:17 pm : link
This time I just felt the need. I left work early for several reasons and watching this PC was one of them. I am glad I did. Joe Judge commanded that room like a true General.

I have been in the room with many Generals when in service and only one ever impressed me greatly(GEN Vincent Brooks). Coach Judge just gave me a similar feeling with his PC. Feeling optimistic

Close to that.

He said that when he was with the Patriots he was familiar with EVERY player in the draft so he knew if they could be used one ST.

Are we getting a new GM too?

No, but he made it clear that no one is on "scholarship," among other things. The one takeaway I got after listening to him was "playtime is over." Very similar to the vibe I got with Coughlin after he took over for Fassel. I think Judge is going to more involved with personnel decisions than I initially thought he'd be.

I suggest you listen to the PC when you can, or at least read the transcript when Eric posts it (but that really won't do it justice, no pun intended).
Watched his opening statement

I could feel the lineman on both sides of the ball smiling from ear to ear.
Given that he is trying to create a Pats'-like chameleon team,

that can change its scheme week-to-week, and that such a team requires a particular kind of player (versatile, flexible, quick learner), it seems likely that JJ will have A LOT of input on ranking prospects for the draft board, even if he's not making the actual picks.
My favorite part about the entire press conference?
jlukes : 1/9/2020 3:30 pm : link
He seemed genuine. 100% genuine, comfortable in his own skin, and the moment wasn't too big for him.

DeAndre Baker might not like him.

But he will respect him.

And Judge - if he's going to be the coach we think - will get Baker to buy in.
He appears

Bill, Judge can be a good coach even if players like Baker don't buy in. In fact some players will chose to not buy in because of lack of trust and or they don't want to buy in to his philosophy. It certainly happens.

One of the major parts of Judge's job will be to find anyone not willing to buy in. Those players certainly won't just come out and admit it. It'll take some investigative work.
Some players may definitely have a problem with him.

I doubt it. There are very few remaining vets in the room and most of those guys will be on the way out too. That's the best thing Judge has going for him... the youth of the roster.

Coughlin took over a group with Pro Bowlers, All Pros, and guys who'd been to a Super Bowl.

You have to admit, its funny that you are spending time on the thread about a press conference.

I know its your schtick but try living a little. There's nothing wrong with tuning in and listening to what the new HC has to say. It doesn't have to mean a whole lot to you personally, but I find it strange that you don't care about what he has to say yet mock Mara or DG for what they say.

Its ok to think positively, no one will get hurt.

I just listened to it. Unfortunately I can see how it can go wrong and fast. He does seem a bit over aggressive. Will he be willing to accept the modern pro player and their social norms?

He is literally Dave Gettleman as a coach. Can he relate to the pop culture of many athletes? Going out and saying Blue Collar like NYC can be interpreted as middle age white male in these times. slight red flag there.

The Pats don't have a single identity; they change their approach depending on the opponent. That flexibility requires a certain kind of player and a certain kind of coaching. JJ said he wants exactly that kind of flexibility: Pass 50 times one week, 10 times the next. That's BB's mentality.

Also struck by him talking about figuring out what each player is good at, what he can do to help you win, instead of looking at what they can't do. That seems like it should be a given but I don't think the Giants have always been good at that. That may be why some of their ex-linemen are performing better around the league than they did in blue.

I don't think it's been the case here for quite some time. The Gilbride passing offense had demanding scheme requirements, and they had one identity. McAdoo ran the same Slants/Flats WCO passing concepts as McCarthy. Modernized in some ways, but still consistent week to week

Not sticking to one "scheme" is modern football. The league is too good to try to compete with the same tendencies week after the week. The better you are at different approaches, the harder you are to defend.

The only exception to that is Tony Bennett, because a)I adore that man b)he's always brutally honest. In a nice way, but he never sugarcoats anything c)he never really gives cliched, canned answers.

I know you are overly grumpy, but at least be consistent. Having a cow about the owners and GM not addressing the team can't logically sit next to calling press conferences meaningless.

I feel like it's worth listening to again. He spent a very large portion of his speaking time explaining how you have to tailor your coaching and teaching to the specific person you're working with, and understanding that everyone learns differently.

Do you think Belichick and Saban relate to pop culture? Come on man. If that's what it take we could have just hired Gronk.

I don't see him as DG at all. From a speaking standpoint they are polar opposites. Judge's entire press conference was about teaching - the what, the how and the why. DG isn't that, he's a talent evaluator.

I can't believe this can be chalked up as a "slight red flag", such an odd take.

Contact drills. Teaching how to fucking TACKLE! God knows the Giants D needs that.
Play to a guy's strength. Don't tell me what he can't do. Tell me what he CAN do, and use that! Hello Deandre Baker!

Also loved that he said the Giants will adopt the Belichick approach of adjusting their strengths to the opponents weaknesses on a week-to-week basis. Sometimes the'll throw the ball 40 times, sometimes it will be 10 times with a heavy run game.

He sounds very confident in his beliefs and his approach without being cocky about it. The word that comes to mind is INTENSE! I see why management and ownership was very impressed.
