Just came out of it -- anyone see it? Curious to hear thoughts. On my way back and its freezing so I'll post mine later, but itching for some discussion and specifically posted it on this board since I know there are some military historians on here
I haven't seen the movie, however the trailers and the negative IMDB reviews are giving me a moment of pause. I have no doubt that this is a technically excellent, but is there a story being told here ? Is this movie based on an actual historical event ? I just saw Midway which I enjoyed immensely. I enjoyed it because it captured the tension and drama of a historical event that shaped the world as we know it. I mostly enjoyed Saving Private Ryan because it too is based on a historical battle and showed in detail how America had to fight at Normandy, i.e. keep sending men to die on the beach until the Germans ran out of bullets.
A lot of other war movies I have not enjoyed, because the only theme of them seems to be "The horror of war", with no significant history explained and nothing new I haven't seen before. At first superficial grace, that's what this looks like. I hope someone will tell me I'm wrong.
I didn't find the continuous shot approach gimmicky. It wasn't a traditional war movie given the focus on a very limited number of characters. I thought it suffered a little bit of "perils of Pauline" syndrome. I would say it was a 10+ on craft; and a 6 on the story. That said, I thought it worth seeing. I would have a very hard time comparing it to Saving Private Ryan. Very different films.
I took my grandkids (12 and 9) to see Midway. They loved the movie and I felt safe with a PG-13. It peaked their interest in history and particularly military history. Of course R rated movie is a no-go for them.

Beautifully shot, Haunting, Heroic and touching.
This is an Anti War movie.
My only knock was I didn't think the two main Characters had lot of chemistry between them, buts that's just me.
I've read it was shot mostly (if not entirely) single shot so you get the feeling of what the characters are going through at the time they are doing it.
Similar to Kid in the Shining riding tricycle in hotel and following Henry Hill through Copacabana kitchen to main room. Will be interesting to see this done in a war movie.
Has anyone seen in IMAX? Is it worth the extra few dollars?
You're so negative.
