Weigh in on who you want for DC -

I Love Clams Casino : 1/10/2020 8:32 am
Given JJ's history, do you think he recruits Pepper Johnson as DC?

Would you want Phillips instead?

Thoughts?

Most guys when hired for HC, hire their coordinators especially from people they have worked with, know well, and are comfortable working with. That's why Kitchens is a good possibility. He's got a good offensive mind, and he and Judge worked together previously.

Based upon the Judge interview the coordinators better have a lot of energy, they must be teachers, sticklers for detail, and scheme diverse.

Which of the available caoches fit this description?

Richards - Has to be #1 on anyone's list.
Steve Wilks - Good Teacher
Pepper Johnson
Teryl Austin
Mike Macdonald Raven LB coach...young.

Wade Phillips - Doesn't strike me as a relentless worker.

Others:
Peter Giunta
Greg Manusky
Marvin Lewis
Rod Marinelli
Jerod Mayo
Perry Fewell lol
Joe Barry, Rams LBs coach
Greg Schiano? College Coach
Mel Tucker? College Coach
Don Brown: Michigan
Kris Richard or Steve Wilks.

For OC Norv or Jay Gruden. As a Fordham homer, I'd love to see Joe Moorhead get a shot, word is he's headed to Oregon as OC.
I just want a 3-4 coach
okayrene : 1/10/2020 10:12 am : link
We're nearly done transitioning to a proper 3-4 personnel-wise. Don't think it'd be wise to go back to a 4-3 at this point. We don't have 4-3 DEs and too many 4-3 DTs on the roster.
My choice for DC is....
OBJRoyal : 1/10/2020 10:21 am : link
Kris Richard. I view him as a smart up and coming DC. He has learned from the likes of Pete Carroll and Rod Marinelli. He seems like someone who would work well with Judge
Wade, Marinelli, Richard - all sound appealing

Didn't Judge specifically say he wasn't going to just hire friends yesterday? The post was deleted, but I believe he said something similar. Can anybody who heard him on the radio post the interview or post what he said? Thanks!

Wade Phillips at assistant HC to help betcher.

Betcher only gets two years during which he shines up his resume with much better assistants and high draft picks.

When he leaves, our new, super qualified defensive backs coach gets the DC position.

my first choice. Players love and respect him. Has seen it all. Would be really good at assessing the talent level on D and maximizing ability.

The way the game has grown I think there is a lot of unknown talent out in the college ranks. Venables as someone mentioned would be a good choice but his son is playing for him at Clemson.

Venables seems like a good hire.

But will he leave Clemson for the NFL?

Quote:
Clemson has made a second major statement this year about how much they want to hold onto defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

After upping his salary to $2 million a year in February, the school extended the deal to five seasons through 2022 and added retention bonuses that make the package worth $11.6 million.

“Brent’s extremely excited. We’re very happy to have him here,” Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich said.

(Phillips at ahc, betch two years promote the db unit new c after that )

Here is a flat out DC name:

Joe Woods. 9ers defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator. 16 + years in the NFL.

But that still begs the question of whom judge hires to run joes dbacks.

Ergo the first suggestion for two years.

Eric Weddle as safeties coach.
I've seen Kris Richard and Wade Phillips mentioned.
giantsfan227B : 1/10/2020 12:11 pm : link
I have read Richard is a screamer on the sidelines and after hearing Judge's comments that he wants a teacher I can't see Richard being hired.

Phillips has the track record but he is getting a bit too old for me and I think having a 38 year old coach needs to work with experienced guys but not to the point that they are his parents age.

To me if you want to be the best go after some of the best. The 49ers have a really good defense.

Why not either Kris Kocurek. DL coach. 11 years experience. 1st year on DL with 49ers. 1 year DL with Dolphins. Spent 9 years with Lions (1 as asst, 8 as DL coach) coaching guys such as Suh.

Maybe someone such as Joe Woods. He currently is DB/Passing Game Coordinator 16 years experience. Has been DC in Denver for 2 years and 2 as DB coach. Has also coached in Oakland, Minnesota and Tampa. In 2018, Denver’s defense finished in the top five in both passes defensed (82) and interceptions (17). LB Von Miller and rookie LB Bradley Chubb combined for 26.5 sacks as Miller’s 14.5 were the second-most in a single season in his career and Chubb’s 12.0 set the Broncos franchise record for the most sacks by a rookie.

NFW on Bettcher staying. That's an awful suggestion.
Just for the years
idiotsavant : 1/10/2020 12:22 pm : link
Joe Woods would probably be excellent but he would benefit from having two years to school up our dbacks and unit coaches on dbacks before he takes up the DC thing.

That said, if we can find good DC coaches (Steve B Eric Weddle but whom we need professionals ) then Joe Woods would be a DC candidate now.

I just don't think it's good to leave a coach (betcher) without the players or all the needed unit staff without another chance to burnish his resume.

Which I clearly warned of on draft day
Typo if we can find good dbacks

Who the fuck cares about his resume. He's just not a good DC. And even if he was the unlucky recipient of a young roster with very little depth, too bad. In order for Judge to get this team moving forward in his vision for them, they can't afford to even take the chance that the defensive lapses were even partially (or primarily) on Bettcher.

Bettcher coming back as DC would represent a massive whiff on upgrading that key role, IMO. For credibility alone, he has to go.

Can Eric Weddle do it within a professionally experienced staff?

Venables is never leaving Clemson unless Dabo gets fired. He has no desire to coach in the NFL or at any other school.

No he's not. He's the defensive passing game coordinator. As in, he manages the team's pass defense.

This seemed to confuse people with Kris Richard's title as well. It's becoming more common to see run/pass delineation within the coaching staff roles, but the nomenclature should not imply that the coaches are working on both sides of the ball.

Wilks when hired by Browns:

Quote:
“We are a 4-3 base. We are very multiple in what we are doing. I think you have to be in this day in age with all of the different things you are seeing. It can change week to week. I am aggressive by nature, but it is all about trying to put your guys into the best position to be successful. It could change. Quarterback is getting the ball out quick, therefore now you have to be more creative in your coverages and things that you are doing on the back end because you are not going to get there. It is all about trying to create negative plays on first and second down so you can get exotic in some of your third down pressures and things you want to do," Wilks said.

Quote:
“Each week, you have to adjust to the personnel and the scheme that you are getting. I think we are very flexible in the things that we do. I think it is about trying to find the right mix and the right personnel to put guys into position. When you look a guy like (DB Jabrill) Peppers, I think he is a guy that is going to be able to fit well within our system. I think you have to have guys that have linebacker traits but also DB skills because the game is so fast and they try to spread you out. You need those guys that are athletic in space, and I think he is going to bring that element.”

Quote:
“No. 1, it is just about gap integrity," Wilks said of how to improve the run defense.

"That is what our defense has been about for years. It is everybody having their gap. It is everybody doing their job. It starts with trust, great communication, technique and fundamentals. We are going to make sure that we emphasize that from Day 1. I think that is what you have to start with in this defense – understanding your responsibility and understanding and trusting that the man beside you is going to do his job. We have to stop the run No. 1.”

Quote:
"I pride myself on the fundamentals and technique. We are not going to get away from that. From Day 1, even in the offseason when we are not working with pads, I still think it is a point of emphasis and it starts there. Then once the season gets here, we can’t get away from it. It is not just one guy. It is a team effort. We have to get guys running to the football. We have to get guys understanding the proper leverage, angles, how we get there, how we arrive with velocity and most importantly, impact."

Very similar to coach Judge. Multiple defense, fundamentals important, weekly changes, versatile and stop run first.

The New England mantra and it's something Judge espoused yesterday is that we'd be scheme versatile and tailor it to the weaknesses of each individual opponent.

Quote:

I’m sure the next question is going to be something relative to, ‘What I look for in the offensive system?’ Well, I can answer that of all three systems—offense, defense, and special teams. Our philosophy is going to be to put pressure on the opponent to prepare for multiple things. Within that, we have to have personnel versatility and we have to have flexibility schematically to make sure that whoever we play, we can adjust our game plan to maximize our strengths versus their weaknesses.

Richards runs the Cover 3 and in Seattle and in Dallas it was very much here's what we run, if it's not working we'll just have to execute it better. Judge will want someone who'll tailor the offense and defense to the strengths of our roster and gameplan for the weaknesses of the opposition week in and week out.

Awesome insight and analysis....thanks for this gem. I think you have a pulse with our new coach.

John Fox would be an interesting choice. He turns 65 in February so he's no spring chicken, but he's not old. And he's known commodity to ownership.

Wade Phillips--if they're sticking with three DL as the base defense--is also worthy of consideration, but he turns 73 in June so we're pushing it in terms of age. I like the idea of bringing in Phillips as Asst Head Coach if they hire a younger, less experienced defensive coordinator.

Both Fox and Phillips are mild-mannered guys, not ego-driven, so less chance of them usurping Judge's leadership (the way a Rex Ryan might). Coaches, like players, can be me-guys instead of team-guys, so Judge needs to be on the lookout when interviewing coordinators with long resumes, especially those who've been head coaches in the past.
