The Giants pick 4th in the upcoming draft. Picking behind them are: Miami Dolphins (5), LA Chargers (6) and Carolina Panthers (7). Each of those teams could be looking for a new franchise quarterback.
Slightly beyond those teams are Jacksonville Jaguars (8), Las Vegas Raiders (12), Indianapolis Colts (13) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (14). Again, four teams who have to at least be considering a new signal caller.
At this stage, there are three quarterbacks projected to be top 15 picks. Joe Burrow (consensus #1 overall), Tua Tagovailo and Justin Herbert.
The Bengals will probably draft Joe Burrow #1 and while the draft is unpredictable, lets assume Washington and the Lions take Young and Okudah. So the Giants are sitting at 4, with two top QB prospects, and seven potential trade suitors. So imagine this scenario: (Although I admit the Lions could blow up this dream scenario if they decide to trade back...)
Miami swaps with the Giants to take their QB of choice. The Giants get pick (5) and Miami's third 1st round pick (27).
Giants now sit at 5, with six potential trade suitors. The Raiders, with two first round picks, jump the other five teams to get Herbert and the Giants get pick (12) and pick (19). Giants 1st Round: (12), (19), (27)
... or Jax want Herbert and Gmen grab picks (9) and (20). Giants 1st Round: (9), (20), (27)
... Or the Colts want Herbert and move. Giants get pick (13), (34) (44) meaning a two round haul of: (13), (27), (34), (36), (44)
There is potential here for the Giants to have three first round picks or 5 picks in the first 45.
Can Gettleman, Judge and the Giants actually make this happen? Or is this just Kevin Costner style pipe dream I've cooked up?
make it happen!
There is also no way Miami trades a first round pick simply to move up one spot.
They'd really be going right for the throat.
They did it in 2006.
If it ensures they get their guy, they might.
I thought at least we could have switched picks with Jets so they could guarantee Darnold.
so that removes one obstacle of trading with close rivals.
2. it would be very Gettleman to do exactly what the media will make a big deal about him never doing (trading down) and doing it multiple times. I'd also remind that last year Gettleman did trade up for Baker.
It's probably unlikely that he will turn into trader Dave overnight, but a slight trade down to add another top 40 pick would be huge. This team needs 1 early contributor on the OL and at least 1 more earlier contributor at each level of the back end on D.
But if they can do well checking each of those boxes (let's say they slide down in the top 10 but still get Simmons, Biadasz at the top of round 2, and X. McKinney - or some haul like that) they'd have a ton of flexibility to add depth players all over the roster with the remaining stockpile of picks.

I think the Giants are institutionally opposed to doing so unless someone makes a patently ridiculous and unrealistic offer.
They did it in 2006.

And that was the last time they have done it in any round. That was also Accorsi, two GMs ago. My guess is that the Giants now hold the record for the longest number of rounds in which a team has not traded down.
When asked why he didn't trade down from #4, DG will say that he didn't want to give up on a "gold jacket player," and that all he was offered was a "hot dog, a pretzel, and a box of doughnuts."
I hope I"m wrong. I didn't want to trade down last year because we had so many picks, and was fine staying at #2 to take Barkley. But we now have our QB and RB, are out of the Chase Young "sweepstakes," and many teams behind us need a QB.
The only small sliver of hope is that DG traded OBJ to get extra picks. He said that it was very difficult to watch 65 picks come off the board between 30 and 95.
Simmons should immediately elevate the DBs presently on the team with his pass rush. The guy is one of two SUPERMEN that COULD be available at 4.
Trade down and up stockpile 6 between 2-4
Or 1-3
If the giants get an offer from anyone other than miami, the next call should be to miami to ask them to beat the offer. Miami has 3 first round picks, they have the most ammo in this draft.
In this exact scenario... I'd do this in a NY heartbeat.
There is also no way Miami trades a first round pick simply to move up one spot.
Exactly... Miami wouldn't do that. If they would it would be to pick 3 if anything with Detroit.

Can someone look at the Lions' secondary and explain why they would take Okudah. Their biggest needs are pass rushers and RB. They are primed to trade down to allow someone to get Tua. No way QBs go 1,3,4.
In other words round #2 and 3 centers, guards (centers of the future), linebackers and safeties give you a better chance of looking back at having found overall best in that years class at position as opposed to some other positions at those picks such as wrs and QBs etc.
-This assumes Miami has a coveted QB to take with their 1st pick
-MIA knows NYG isn't picking a QB at 4, so their reason for this is to prevent NYG from finding a trade partner, causing them to lose a coveted QB
-From 5 to 4 is 100 points on the trade value chart
-Would be generous of MIA to give pick #27 (value 680) for this.
But, strange things do happen in drafts, and when a team is hot for a QB, they can give up plenty.
Unless you are willing to move back into the middle of the first round, you will most likely be unable to find a suitor. And for what? You are all willing to give up the chance to draft an elite difference maker at the top of the draft, something this team desperately needs, Just to maybe plug another hole or two with a good player? We have a roster full of those already. This team needs a few studs, Period. There will be a couple staring us right in the face when we are on the clock at #4. Grab one and don't look back.
And in the years he was GM in Carolina. He's been a GM for more than two seasons.
If Gettleman is open to trading down in the first place (no guarantee of that), he's almost certain to take the best offer he receives for #4. The opportunity to jump over Miami and the other QB-needy teams is what drives up the price, IMO - and if he does trade down, it will only be one trade. Minuscule chance of two.
Huh? The Jets traded up.

If they covet Tua as has been reported for months then their incentive would be to make sure they get him and prohibit someone else from trading with the Giants to get him.
