Can the improbable double-trade back happen for the Giants?

Ben in Tampa : 1/10/2020 11:00 am
The Giants pick 4th in the upcoming draft. Picking behind them are: Miami Dolphins (5), LA Chargers (6) and Carolina Panthers (7). Each of those teams could be looking for a new franchise quarterback.

Slightly beyond those teams are Jacksonville Jaguars (8), Las Vegas Raiders (12), Indianapolis Colts (13) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (14). Again, four teams who have to at least be considering a new signal caller.

At this stage, there are three quarterbacks projected to be top 15 picks. Joe Burrow (consensus #1 overall), Tua Tagovailo and Justin Herbert.

The Bengals will probably draft Joe Burrow #1 and while the draft is unpredictable, lets assume Washington and the Lions take Young and Okudah. So the Giants are sitting at 4, with two top QB prospects, and seven potential trade suitors. So imagine this scenario: (Although I admit the Lions could blow up this dream scenario if they decide to trade back...)

Miami swaps with the Giants to take their QB of choice. The Giants get pick (5) and Miami's third 1st round pick (27).

Giants now sit at 5, with six potential trade suitors. The Raiders, with two first round picks, jump the other five teams to get Herbert and the Giants get pick (12) and pick (19). Giants 1st Round: (12), (19), (27)

... or Jax want Herbert and Gmen grab picks (9) and (20). Giants 1st Round: (9), (20), (27)

... Or the Colts want Herbert and move. Giants get pick (13), (34) (44) meaning a two round haul of: (13), (27), (34), (36), (44)

There is potential here for the Giants to have three first round picks or 5 picks in the first 45.

Can Gettleman, Judge and the Giants actually make this happen? Or is this just Kevin Costner style pipe dream I've cooked up?
PLEASE

make it happen!
Considering Gettleman has NEVER

traded back, I wouldn't put $ on him doing this May. Hopefully some of his power has been relinquished so maybe it's not his final call.
Not in a million years
arniefez : 1/10/2020 11:04 am : link
could Dave Gettleman pull that off. He's not even capable of doing the Miami deal which the Giants would be nuts to pass on if offered. The man drafted a RB #2 when teams immediately behind him were desperate for QBs.
This scenario would be an

Giants should trade down, but I'd be stunned if they do. Gettleman has never done so. Reese never did either. I think the Giants are institutionally opposed to doing so unless someone makes a patently ridiculous and unrealistic offer.

There is also no way Miami trades a first round pick simply to move up one spot.
For those who want to rebuild the O Line
Shecky : 1/10/2020 11:09 am : link
Trade down and stockpile picks is certainly the best case scenario. Four or five top picks would go a long way towards rebuilding the O Line AND LB or WR positions.
It doesn't make sense not to
nyjuggernaut2 : 1/10/2020 11:10 am : link
unless somehow Chase Young falls to them. This team has a lot of holes still, and not having an early 3rd rounder hurts. Gettleman needs to accumulate more picks to make up for it.
We need players so a trade down would be ideal
Rudy5757 : 1/10/2020 11:14 am : link
It just doesnt seem to be the way the Giants do it. Maybe things have changed with the new coach but it just seems like we are going to let the draft come to us as usual.
This is about
pjcas18 : 1/10/2020 11:18 am : link
as rare as the triple dog dare and you think the Giants would breach etiquette and skip the single trade back and go straight to the double trade back?

They'd really be going right for the throat.

They did it in 2006.

If it ensures they get their guy, they might.
i thought we could do this in 2018
markky : 1/10/2020 11:18 am : link
unfortunately Rosen and Allen didn't go as high as some thought they might.

I thought at least we could have switched picks with Jets so they could guarantee Darnold.

what's also interesting
nyfootballfan : 1/10/2020 11:20 am : link
is that all four potential trade partners are AFC
so that removes one obstacle of trading with close rivals.
this all assumes someone wants to trade up and agrees with your value
Victor in CT : 1/10/2020 11:20 am : link
and the narrative that Gettleman is "incapable" or just won't because never has in the 2 whole years he's been here is ridiculous.

1. hopefully Judge brings the stockpiling picks mentality from NE
2. it would be very Gettleman to do exactly what the media will make a big deal about him never doing (trading down) and doing it multiple times. I'd also remind that last year Gettleman did trade up for Baker.

It's probably unlikely that he will turn into trader Dave overnight, but a slight trade down to add another top 40 pick would be huge. This team needs 1 early contributor on the OL and at least 1 more earlier contributor at each level of the back end on D.

But if they can do well checking each of those boxes (let's say they slide down in the top 10 but still get Simmons, Biadasz at the top of round 2, and X. McKinney - or some haul like that) they'd have a ton of flexibility to add depth players all over the roster with the remaining stockpile of picks.

And that was the last time they have done it in any round. That was also Accorsi, two GMs ago. My guess is that the Giants now hold the record for the longest number of rounds in which a team has not traded down.

When asked why he didn't trade down from #4, DG will say that he didn't want to give up on a "gold jacket player," and that all he was offered was a "hot dog, a pretzel, and a box of doughnuts."

I hope I"m wrong. I didn't want to trade down last year because we had so many picks, and was fine staying at #2 to take Barkley. But we now have our QB and RB, are out of the Chase Young "sweepstakes," and many teams behind us need a QB.

The only small sliver of hope is that DG traded OBJ to get extra picks. He said that it was very difficult to watch 65 picks come off the board between 30 and 95.
Gettleman won't pass on the edge rusher again
VinegarPeppers : 1/10/2020 11:26 am : link
...not after passing on Josh Allen.

Simmons should immediately elevate the DBs presently on the team with his pass rush. The guy is one of two SUPERMEN that COULD be available at 4.
Do it!

If the giants get an offer from anyone other than miami, the next call should be to miami to ask them to beat the offer. Miami has 3 first round picks, they have the most ammo in this draft.
I think the backlash has been so severe

with the Williams trade that it wouldn't surprise me, in the least, to see DG try and recoup picks to make up for it.

In this exact scenario... I'd do this in a NY heartbeat.

Exactly... Miami wouldn't do that. If they would it would be to pick 3 if anything with Detroit.

Can someone look at the Lions' secondary and explain why they would take Okudah. Their biggest needs are pass rushers and RB. They are primed to trade down to allow someone to get Tua. No way QBs go 1,3,4.
It makes literally no sense for the Giants not to at least
lawguy9801 : 1/10/2020 1:51 pm : link
switch places with Miami, and while I don't think they'd get Miami's first round pick, at least get a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Miami would ensure that they get the QB they want, and the Giants are no worse off and can get whoever they wanted, at 4, at 5.
The draft is a crapshoot. Having more players
CT Charlie : 1/10/2020 2:19 pm : link
with a high floor is more likely to help the team than having fewer players with a high ceiling. It hasn't hurt the Patriots, and it wouldn't hurt us.

In addition. You leverage the probability of success by being humble with your positional tiers .

In other words round #2 and 3 centers, guards (centers of the future), linebackers and safeties give you a better chance of looking back at having found overall best in that years class at position as opposed to some other positions at those picks such as wrs and QBs etc.
Make it happen!
Gregorio : 1/10/2020 2:56 pm : link
but, realistically I am trying to see what Miami's incentive would be to trade up 1 spot.

-This assumes Miami has a coveted QB to take with their 1st pick
-MIA knows NYG isn't picking a QB at 4, so their reason for this is to prevent NYG from finding a trade partner, causing them to lose a coveted QB
-From 5 to 4 is 100 points on the trade value chart
-Would be generous of MIA to give pick #27 (value 680) for this.

But, strange things do happen in drafts, and when a team is hot for a QB, they can give up plenty.
These trade down proposals
giant power : 1/10/2020 3:25 pm : link
are absurd. Miami is not giving up two firsts to move up one spot with us. With Burrow the top pick, this shit only happens if there are only two Stud QBs and your proposed trading partner has to have one. You people are assuming Miami is stuck on Herbert or someone else they fear will be gone when they pick at five. That is a preposterous assumption. This happened two years ago and nobody traded up. People on this board were begging for Josh Rosen and he fell all the way to ten. These teams can stay right where they are and a QB will be there for them to draft if they so choose. Outside of Barrow, none of these guys have set themselves apart from the others and Tua now comes with serious injury concerns.

Unless you are willing to move back into the middle of the first round, you will most likely be unable to find a suitor. And for what? You are all willing to give up the chance to draft an elite difference maker at the top of the draft, something this team desperately needs, Just to maybe plug another hole or two with a good player? We have a roster full of those already. This team needs a few studs, Period. There will be a couple staring us right in the face when we are on the clock at #4. Grab one and don't look back.

If we get one trade down I'll bless my lucky stars and be satisfied. IMO it's either Okudah or a trade down come the Draft.

But the good news is that the Giants could be in position to grab the #1 guy on their draft board.
Here's why I don't think that a double trade-down is at all realistic
Gatorade Dunk : 1/10/2020 3:38 pm : link
If there's a suitor for the #5 spot that the Giants would trade into with the first trade down, there's a possibility that team is probably also in the mix for #4 so that they can get ahead of the Dolphins. Gettleman, even ignoring the fact that he has never traded down as a GM, would be hard pressed to ignore what could be the best offer he receives for #4 simply for the opportunity to try to flip his pick twice and essentially sell two QBs.

If Gettleman is open to trading down in the first place (no guarantee of that), he's almost certain to take the best offer he receives for #4. The opportunity to jump over Miami and the other QB-needy teams is what drives up the price, IMO - and if he does trade down, it will only be one trade. Minuscule chance of two.

If they covet Tua as has been reported for months then their incentive would be to make sure they get him and prohibit someone else from trading with the Giants to get him.
Highly doubtful in my view...
