It’s meant to be a physical game. It’s for tough people. We will practice with a physical attitude. We will practice in pads, we will practice live tackling — not to make a statement that we’re trying to be tough. We’re going to practice live tackling because I believe in doing it safely. You want to make your players safer, you start by instructing them how to do it. We’re going to work on everything we do. Everything we ask them to do at full speed on Sunday at a competitive level we’re going to make sure that we have practiced, corrected, and re-practiced before they have to do it at a live pace. |
It will be interesting to see if any players "rat" out Judge for "violating" league rules.
But I'm thrilled we will be practicing in pads and live tackling.
but if he fails, one of the first cracks between him and players could be what we've heard many times before - guys without BB's record of success thinking they can instill "toughness" and "the right culture" by being a hardass. Cautionary tale, but JJ gives the vibe of someone who will emphasize being in-tune with his players. Interesting to see how it plays out.
We shall see. The Giants have been a soft team for a long, long time. The Eagles have not.
I think Diehl in the video on Giants.com said it would be about using the correct form to stop the ball carrier's advance but not take him to the ground in practice.
It certainly beats, "We'll protect The Duke and run slant/flat until we achieve a manageable 3rd down".
100% agree with what Gronk said. Having the practice field is nice but I'd love Judge to have the team practice outside all the time. Toughen them up to play in any weather conditions.
He reminds me a lot of a young Bill Parcells from almost 40 years ago (yes, I do actually remember!).
I am very happy with this hire. I wouldn't trade him for any of the other coaches who have been hired this year. And I am actually once again excited about the Giants!
We’re entitled to our opinion and optimism. I disagree with you completely especially because Gettleman himself said he won’t be the only one deciding on personnel.
I'm sure he's aware of this.
My thoughts exactly. He can say that all he wants but the CBA dictates all the padded practices.

Wow. Groundbreaking stuff here!
I was wondering the same thing. You don't need full pads to practice technique.
We really don’t know how little talent the team has b/c the coaching was terrible. How many times was the middle of the field wide open? That’s on the coaches.
I am all for real tackling in practice. Not sure how you practice tackling without tackling. It's all bullshit now and next time you watch a Giants game and complain about poor tackling... blame the CBA.
I'm not saying I disagree with your point here, but this only makes sense right up until the point where you lose a key starter in camp because he slipped on a wet field and tore his knee up. You know that's why teams go inside, not "coddling".
“ Being a special teams coach, you have to know every player on your team inside and out because you have to know who you can use with a limited menu. It’s kind of like when you’re hungry, you go to the fridge, your Dad says figure out a way to make a sandwich. You know it’s in there, but you’ve got to find a way because you’ve got to eat. So, I’ve got to know what everybody does so I can put those ingredients together and get the most out of it. So, what I’ve prepared myself for was leading into every draft I studied every player in the draft as a player and an athlete. I didn’t look at them as a receiver, I didn’t look at them as a tight end, I didn’t look at them as a linebacker. I want to know how they moved— are they stiff in the hips, are they a straight-line speed guy, do they use their hands, what kind of short area quickness do they have, what kind of top end speed do they have, do they turn down contact.”
They practice in pads and drill tackling. So it makes sense Judge would bring that method here; it works.

It's not a bullshit statement if they actually practice tackling. I doubt he's going to violate the CBA, but it will be interesting to see how often they practice tackling compared to years' past.
Judge mentioned attention to detail throughout his speech yesterday and it really resonated with me. This small but major factor is what's been missing from the last two regimes. Sloppy coaching, not prepared, out of position, poor technique.. etc.
He may never be a great, but if Judge learned one thing from the greats, I hope this is it. He seems extremely prepared and will leave no stone on turned in the name of preparation. Very refreshing.
I'm not aware of any McAdoo or Shurmur practices with live tackling.
