Another part of Judge's press conference music to my ears

It’s meant to be a physical game. It’s for tough people. We will practice with a physical attitude. We will practice in pads, we will practice live tackling — not to make a statement that we’re trying to be tough. We’re going to practice live tackling because I believe in doing it safely. You want to make your players safer, you start by instructing them how to do it. We’re going to work on everything we do. Everything we ask them to do at full speed on Sunday at a competitive level we’re going to make sure that we have practiced, corrected, and re-practiced before they have to do it at a live pace.

It will be interesting to see if any players "rat" out Judge for "violating" league rules.

But I'm thrilled we will be practicing in pads and live tackling.
Loved that as well..

Because we have been an AWFUL tackling team for yrs... Football is about good blocking, tackling & desire... Gotta "Want it". We haven't.

It is kind of a bullshit statement though
robbieballs2003 : 1/11/2020 4:25 pm : link
As the CBA tells you how many full padded practice you can have. Yes, coaches break the rules but he won't be long for the job if that is the case. Also, he did say you have to relate to the players and treat them like human beings not just someone collecting a paycheck. Being tough on the guys only works for a few reasons. You need to gain their respect one way or another.
Tackling has been getting worse all across the NFL
Jay on the Island : 1/11/2020 4:26 pm : link
Not practicing tackling is a huge reason why. Unfortunately, when a starter suffers a season-ending injury in one of these practices Judge will be criticized mercilessly from many fans and members of the media.
glad he qualified it with a nod toward safety
battttles : 1/11/2020 4:28 pm : link
and he seems smart enough to pivot as necessary.

but if he fails, one of the first cracks between him and players could be what we've heard many times before - guys without BB's record of success thinking they can instill "toughness" and "the right culture" by being a hardass. Cautionary tale, but JJ gives the vibe of someone who will emphasize being in-tune with his players. Interesting to see how it plays out.

Our last 2 coaches had 3/4 of a brain between them. I don't give a fuck what happens while this guy is getting whipping this band of losers into shape. Do what you need to do Joe Joe.

We shall see. The Giants have been a soft team for a long, long time. The Eagles have not.

Why does everyone think players
UConn4523 : 1/11/2020 4:34 pm : link
don’t want to practice hard? No doubt there are those that are just going through the motions but plenty of players take their craft seriously. Being a hardass can still be met with respect, it’s all about delivery.

On Fox a few weeks ago was that they were always ready for the weather because they practiced outside no matter the weather and wore full pads as many times as was allowed and they ran them into the ground. Belichick makes them run run run and run some more, again it's the little simple things that build on each other. Not coddling these guys has made the Pats a tough team, meanwhile we see a sprinkle and the team runs inside to keep their jerseys clean. Toughness is a mentality and we have lacked it since Coughlin left.

I think Diehl in the video on Giants.com said it would be about using the correct form to stop the ball carrier's advance but not take him to the ground in practice.
The CBA limits them but teams...
Ryan : 1/11/2020 4:36 pm : link
....don't always use them to the full extent. NE is generally a very sound tackling team - I'll take that he understands how that manifests from the practice environment.

It certainly beats, "We'll protect The Duke and run slant/flat until we achieve a manageable 3rd down".

100% agree with what Gronk said. Having the practice field is nice but I'd love Judge to have the team practice outside all the time. Toughen them up to play in any weather conditions.
Judge saying that it's for safety reasons rather than "red meat"
BestFeature : 1/11/2020 4:43 pm : link
toughness reasons show you have well thought out this presentation was and how cerebral this guy is. It's ridiculous how some of these stupid talking heads are portraying this as some ra ra tough-guy speech. It was ridiculously well thought out. This speech had something for everyone and you get the feeling and the psychologist that posted this concurs that it wasn't just to give people what they want to hear. Logically a mixture of old school and new school is the way to go and I fully believe that he believes this. Now is the hard part, execution.

To one press conference. What matters is what Gettleman does. This team has so little talent, especially on defense.

moespree : 1/11/2020 4:52 pm : link
The CBA agreement allows for 11 full padded practices before November 1. As for live tackling I have no idea but I suspect there is some kind of restriction on that as well.
Just to torture myself, I watched BM and PS's introductory press confs
Rico : 1/11/2020 4:54 pm : link
Judge sounds so much better than either of them! More focused, more serious, smarter, and tougher.

He reminds me a lot of a young Bill Parcells from almost 40 years ago (yes, I do actually remember!).

I am very happy with this hire. I wouldn't trade him for any of the other coaches who have been hired this year. And I am actually once again excited about the Giants!

We’re entitled to our opinion and optimism. I disagree with you completely especially because Gettleman himself said he won’t be the only one deciding on personnel.

I was wondering the same thing. You don't need full pads to practice technique.

We really don’t know how little talent the team has b/c the coaching was terrible. How many times was the middle of the field wide open? That’s on the coaches.
didn't Seattle become a better tackling team when they focused on it
markky : 1/11/2020 7:10 pm : link
in practice, also with a focus on safety? I believe they started teaching the "wrap and twist" approach, which was meant to limit injuries.

You can have 14 practice days..
EricJ : 1/11/2020 7:41 pm : link
in full pads with full contact hitting. So, I think Judge is merely saying he will take advantage of all 14 days. Other teams do not use them all.

I am all for real tackling in practice. Not sure how you practice tackling without tackling. It's all bullshit now and next time you watch a Giants game and complain about poor tackling... blame the CBA.

I'm not saying I disagree with your point here, but this only makes sense right up until the point where you lose a key starter in camp because he slipped on a wet field and tore his knee up. You know that's why teams go inside, not "coddling".

I was trying to find your email address and BB’56 today. Trying not to get my hopes up, but love what I’m reading.

“ Being a special teams coach, you have to know every player on your team inside and out because you have to know who you can use with a limited menu. It’s kind of like when you’re hungry, you go to the fridge, your Dad says figure out a way to make a sandwich. You know it’s in there, but you’ve got to find a way because you’ve got to eat. So, I’ve got to know what everybody does so I can put those ingredients together and get the most out of it. So, what I’ve prepared myself for was leading into every draft I studied every player in the draft as a player and an athlete. I didn’t look at them as a receiver, I didn’t look at them as a tight end, I didn’t look at them as a linebacker. I want to know how they moved— are they stiff in the hips, are they a straight-line speed guy, do they use their hands, what kind of short area quickness do they have, what kind of top end speed do they have, do they turn down contact.”
Tackling
HitSquad : 1/11/2020 9:47 pm : link
The Pats have had the least amount of missed tackles the last couple of years.

They practice in pads and drill tackling. So it makes sense Judge would bring that method here; it works.

Quote:
“That was one of the things when guys told me about the NFL and I got here, I was like, ‘Dang, we tackle here,’ ” McCourty added. “We do a lot of tackling drills. That’s one thing Bill really, truly believes in. It’s a key fundamental of the game, so we’ve tackled a lot since I’ve been here.”

It's not a bullshit statement if they actually practice tackling. I doubt he's going to violate the CBA, but it will be interesting to see how often they practice tackling compared to years' past.
For Me It Was- Attention to Detail
Bavaro_the_Mafioso : 1/11/2020 10:24 pm : link
I happened to watch The Art of Coaching Wednesday and easily latched on to something after the presser. A common theme from Saban and BB was that details matter. The same could be said of Judge.

Judge mentioned attention to detail throughout his speech yesterday and it really resonated with me. This small but major factor is what's been missing from the last two regimes. Sloppy coaching, not prepared, out of position, poor technique.. etc.

He may never be a great, but if Judge learned one thing from the greats, I hope this is it. He seems extremely prepared and will leave no stone on turned in the name of preparation. Very refreshing.
