PFT: “17 game season likely”.. CBA would be done otherwise

Per the source, a 17-game season is “likely, not definitively” part of the new deal ... So will it be done? If the two sides can work out the money that would be associated with a 17-game season, yes.

The NFL is eager to get the new CBA finished with the players before this season’s Super Bowl. The current CBA expires at the end of the 2020 season.

According to PFT, if not for the new 17 game schedule, everything else has been agreed upon and the new CBA would be done.

I think the writing is on the wall with this one and it’s going to happen. What’s most likely to happen is the NFL will expand to a 19-week season, with each team playing 8 home games, 8 away game, 1 neutral site game and each team getting two bye weeks.

PFT: 17 games likely, not definitively part of new CBA - ( New Window )
I wonder how they are going to handle scheduling the extra game
BH28 : 1/11/2020 7:36 pm : link
The formula right now is pretty simple, division rivals home and away, NFC division, AFC division, and two other teams from your conference divisions that finished the same standing as you.

This would seem to me like it would unbalance the schedules.
Extra game should be vs cross-conference "rival"
Breeze_94 : 1/11/2020 7:42 pm : link
Based on proximity...Lets see Giants vs Jets every year

Unlikely though since this doesn't hold true for the rest of the league besides Rams-Chargers, Skins-Ravens, Steelers-Eagles, Cowboys-Texans, Bucs-Phins

Add one same place team from the AFC
How many London games will this mean?
ron mexico : 1/11/2020 7:46 pm : link
Probably at least 8

Yes, this is my guess. Everyone plays a game in Europe or Mexico (maybe Canada?) This way, no one has to give up a home game to do it.
Maybe there'll be a game or two in Hawaii every year
Milton : 1/11/2020 8:19 pm : link
Maybe Alaska too. Maybe Alabama. Maybe Nebraska. The one game a year at a neutral site gives the NFL a chance to place games in a variety of locations that don't get to see NFL football.

I guess that would make sense. If the Giants played the NFC West and AFC East one year then say the entire division would also play the AFC North.

1st place NFC East vs 1st place AFC North
2nd place NFC East vs 1st place AFC North
Etc
Etc
.

dumb. There is no good reason to do this other than a little more profit
This is just a bridge...
bw in dc : 1/11/2020 8:47 pm : link
to 18 games. Just further proof the owners couldn't care less about safety.

They are such phonies. And the NFLPA is as gullible and dumb as ever.
holy hell
giantfan2000 : 1/11/2020 9:06 pm : link
17 games is reasonable especially if NFL gets rid of 1 pre season game

but 19 games .. players careers won't be very long ..
If it gets the Super Bowl to Presidents Weekend
BlueHurricane : 1/11/2020 9:20 pm : link
I am all for it.

Where did you see something about 19 games? I read the article 3 times and never saw anything about that.
It's 19 weeks, not 19 games in the OP
BH28 : 1/11/2020 10:00 pm : link
17 games plus two bye weeks. And that's speculation

I have wondered the same thing. It is easy to say one neutral site game to keep home and away even, but who do you play for that game? What kind of formula to you come up with? In all their negotiations for this have the owners said what the formula might be?

If This Is True

And the NFL sticks to not starting games until after Labor Day, then Super Bowl Sunday will be Presidents weekend every year. This is something the NFL has been focused on for a long time. Just an interesting little nugget.
Overall I like it
ron mexico : 1/12/2020 9:50 am : link
I’ll take two more weeks of football, one more game and a SB on a holiday weekend.

The 2nd bye should help improve the health of teams as well
The one thing the nfl has correct is that their schedule is perfect
Joey from GlenCove : 1/12/2020 9:50 am : link
They are now going to fuck it.

However I will take 17 games over more playoff teams
I’ll agree at NFL opponent selection is perfect
ron mexico : 1/12/2020 10:19 am : link
scheduling can be improved. Another bye will help a lot.
