What's the take here on Tannehill?

MOOPS : 1/12/2020 3:15 pm
He's an UFA after this season. What's the feeling on what he's worth?
He's going to want $25M or more for multiple years (4?) with half or more guaranteed. Would you pay that for him?
He did enough in Miami to keep his starting position but he never crossed the line to be mentioned with the top tier of QBs, even the second tier. He was a JAG that could occasionally look pretty.
Tennessee has no QB under contract after the season. Obviously they let Mariota walk (or sign him to a near vet min. contract as a backup if he gets no interest in FA). But he's shown to be not the guy.
Tannehill has been a game manager this year. Nothing more. Pay him, franchise him? Find a new JAG? Is Tannehill a Trent Dilfer clone, right place, right time?
He’s Dilfer-ing.

He has to be careful and not overvalue his services.
Diver_Down : 1/12/2020 3:35 pm : link
With his past in Miami, he wasn't terrible. The team was terrible and he had injuries. He obviously wasn't the guy going forward with tank job/rebuild so they had to actually pay a chunk of what was owed to him in order to facilitate a trade.

Mariota stole $24M Tenn. - the caveat of the 5th year option. With these highly drafted QBs(Top 10), the answer as to whether they are the franchise QB needs to be known at the end of the 3rd season. If there is any doubt whether it is injuries or performance, the 5th year option should not be picked up. Mariota needs to find a new opportunity. He can't be the backup.

Tannehill has to realize this is his last contract with financial security. His service is more valuable to Tenn. than it would be with any other team. Their run first offensive scheme caters to Tannehill's skillset where he is excellent off play-action. If he overvalues his services, he'll be left without a seat in this coming wave of QB musical chairs. He would be best served taking a team friendly deal of $15M/yr that can be pushed to $20M/yr with incentives.
Henry is also a UFA, so they’ve got make a choice
Ben in Tampa : 1/12/2020 3:38 pm : link
If they want to use a tag.

I wouldn’t give him a top tier deal, but what is Tennessee supposed to do? They may try and do a Cousins-type deal. 3 years, $24mm, fully guaranteed.

I’m trying to think of other places where Tannehill could start and Carolina and the Bucs are the only real destinations that come to mind. He could maybe compete for a starting gig elsewhere but wouldn’t enter training camp as the starter The Saints probably have a vacancy but don’t have any cap room.

So I think your guidelines are well taken. $15mm. Both sides have every reason to work a deal.

And I think they are resigning Conklin. I thought that before last night but after that brilliant performance, I don’t see how the Titans could not. One less high quality OL for the Giants to sign.
He averaged 250 yards and 2 TDs
Tim in Eternal Blue : 1/12/2020 3:49 pm : link
In the regular season.

He isn't being asked to do much because nobody can stop Henry.

Make no mistake... The Titans aren't in the AFC championship with Mariota. Not a fucking chance.
He has been more than a game manager this year.
robbieballs2003 : 1/12/2020 3:49 pm : link
Go look at what he has done this year in limited starts. No, I wouldn't make him a top paid QB but he has helped that team be where they are.
The Dilfer analogy is wrong
cosmicj : 1/12/2020 3:52 pm : link
Tannehill put up very strong numbers to end the season. Also, in today’s NFL a QBs running ability is key and Tannehill can move around. The QB position has changed in the last few years.

Agreed. I think too many people are hung up on how he played in Miami and haven't paid enough attention to how he's played in Tenn. He's played well there, and they took off once he took over.

I think he's better than he gets credit for.
I would Transition tag him
Rudy5757 : 1/12/2020 3:56 pm : link
For a QB well worth it. He's not going to sign for 15 mil when others are going to get 30. It's going to take 20 to 25 mil to sign him. As a FA he would easily get that from someone as a starter. He's as good or better than Cousins

Good starter
KWALL2 : 1/12/2020 4:40 pm : link
He extends plays, can make every throw. Very athletic too.

If MIN had him instead of cousins they’re still playing.

I always liked the guy. In Miami he had no help but he had good stretches of play with that team.

He’s made a ton of money the last 2 months. He should and will get a monster deal.

he'll likely get paid far more than his true value.
You have a really hungry and confident team and a coach to keep them focused. A top 2 or 3 RB, good OL and outstanding D.
If Tennessee can get him for $20M per + incentives they probably are getting a bargain in this market.
If Tannehill gets that, he should throw a whole bunch of buckaroos Henry's way.
I think Tannehill’s wife is hot.

Tough call
WillVAB : 1/12/2020 7:57 pm : link
He’s doing what needs to be done but he’s replaceable. I think a lot of QBs likely on the market could do well in that offense.

Eli, Rivers, Dalton, etc could do well there at a cheaper price and shorter commitment.

Whatever they do I hope they don’t have enough to re-sign Conklin.

bw in dc : 1/12/2020 8:10 pm : link
and he really should get MVP votes. He's come a long way since initially playing WR at Texas A&M.

I'd give him a 3yr/$75M deal if I was Tennessee. He is building a very nice rapport with some promising young receivers. And he's more than willing to play a manager-plus role...

Tannehill..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/13/2020 9:53 am : link
landed in a very good situation. He's replacing a QB that wasn't a very good thrower of the ball, and he is. While he's called on to make plays and has, the offense has gone through Henry the 2nd half of the season.

I really think this speaks more to Mariota's failures than anything else. Tenn realized they had to make a change and they did.
I don't think Tannehill is a great QB
Greg from LI : 1/13/2020 9:54 am : link
But people sometimes act like he was terrible in Miami. He wasn't bad at all. He was decent but unspectacular with a lousy supporting cast.
Accurate thrower...
Racer : 1/13/2020 10:00 am : link
..with mobility. If he's not asked to do too much he's shown he can string together some great games.

The passing yards in these two playoff games are an indication that the TEN staff knows exactly how to limit the downside. If they had to play catch up at any point, the mistakes would have come and we wouldn't be having a discussion.

That said, he has made some great throws...the skinny post TD with the pocket collapsing last week was impressive.
I think we should go found out what it costs to get

Mariota...
Tennehill has been significantly
Dnew15 : 1/13/2020 10:58 am : link
better in his stretch as the Titan's QB than Dilfer was a QB of the Ravens the year they won the SB.

It is a good comparison, since they both took over their respective teams at about the same time in the season.

When Eli didn't have average help around him, yes. Later in his career after he became gunshy, for sure. With ordinary or plus talent around him, Eli had plus pedigree and won some of the biggest games possible. I don't foresee the same for Tanneyhill, but here's his first crack at it.
Tannehill was decent in Miami but had trouble with deep ball
Eric on Li : 1/13/2020 11:18 am : link
seems like he's gotten a little bit better at that.

At the same time he's completed less than 10 passes in each playoff game and under 100 yards. So that context shouldn't be ignored.

Anyone comparing him to what Eli did during either playoff run is insane, I'm pretty sure he passed for more yards in every single game than Tannehill has in 2 games combined this year. When Tannehill throws 50 passes for 300+ yards without a turnover against a defense like SF I'll be a little more impressed.
