Former #Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is expected to be the #Broncos’ new offensive coordinator, sources tell me and @RapSheet
. Deal not done but decision made on Shurmur’s end and it’s headed that way. Drew Lock gets a new OC.
Bears wanted him and with Stefanski moving on supposedly Vikings wanted him to. Maybe the NFL has serious thoughts about who was in the right between Shurmur and Gettleman.

I think it is more he has had success with a strong Head Coach in place as a OC. I am surprised they are sold on Lock but maybe they want his ability to develop and assess.

Does is still get the money the Giants owed or does this wipe that out?
Most contracts for players/coaches have offset guarantees. What it means is that if $5M is still owed and the new contract pays $2M then the player/coach will still receive the $5M total in cash earnings, but the prior team will only have to pay $3M.
After the draft, you will read about players that aren't signed despite the draft slot dictating the pay. In most cases the players are holding out until they get no-offset language in their contract. This mostly affects 1st round picks where the contract is fully guaranteed. What the player wants is if they are released in the final year of their contract where they can sign a new contract with a new team then they will receive the full guaranteed contract dictated by their draft slot and their new contract.

Traditionally taking another job voids your previous contract.
I don’t know if this is correct but someone last week said that Shurmur still gets his money but the Giants get to deduct the new salary. So, let’s say the Giants have him under contract for $5 million a year. If his contract with the Broncos is for $1 million a year, then the Giants only have to pay Shurmur $4 million a year.

Pretty sure this is correct. If it voided the previous contract then no ex-HC would take another job right away.
how can anyone look at the playcalling and overall offense this past year or even 2018 and come to the conclusion that shurmur is a good offensive coordinator, let alone a great one?
is the logic really that he was so overwhelmed by being HC that that is why the NYG offense looked terrible much of the time?
Good form him. Glad he's not in Giants Division. Good guy. Â

Pretty much. He was fine as an OC with the Vikings
Talent was atrocious and don’t hold the 2019 failures against Shurmur?
He’s a good offensive coach he just isn’t a Head coach. He lacks presence to command the respect of players. Without that you aren’t an NFL Head coach.

He's good at it. Some guys just aren't cutout to be the boss of an undertaking as complex as HC of an NFL franchise. GL Pat...as best as your interests don't conflict with ours.
He might be for all I know, but every other post says 'Well deserved. He's a good man' or 'Good guy'. Who really knows? I've never met the man. And all I've seen of him in the public eye indicates quite the opposite. He wasn't exactly Mr. Sunshine/Mr. Nice when it came to the media. Yeah, the media asked him ridiculous ?s, but I never came away thinking he was some swell individual. Again, he very well may be an awesome person, but I don't know & I don't think anyone here knows either.

Me too. Clearly not head coach material, happy he’s gone, but I don’t harbor any I’ll will.
Same here.
I think the Giants have to make up the difference

Wasn't unemployed long at all

@AllbrightNFL
Drew Lock was one of Shurmur's favorites in the draft last year.
Dave Gettleman ultimately seleted Daniel Jones. Now Shurmur will get to coach Lock.

Smart move by Denver.

Wish him well. Not a bad guy. Just not HC.

I still want Gettleman fired!
(Happy he got a job already. He does seem like a nice guy.)

As explained above, John and Steve will pay the difference. Shurmur will still get all the money that he is owed.

does this mean the Giant don't have to pay him any of the money left on his contract? Or, is that just wishful thinking on my part?

Thanks.
Just out of curiosity, why does it matter to a fan if the team is still paying a former coach they fired? There is no cap on coaches.

Maybe Shurmur owes Dave some money.
Giants fans don't give him nearly enough credit for what he accomplished with Jones this year.

I think most Giants fans give him a ton of credit for his work with Jones.
But he wasn't the right man for the HC job, especially here in NY with the Giants' tradition of tough nosed defensive clubs.

lol I hate allbright so much. Makes it seem like Gettleman chose the guy Shurmur didn’t want even though Shurmur advocated for DJ.
Good for Shurmur though wish him the best. Some people are better off coordinators
+1
