Graham in as DC...2 FA's of note

Breeze_94 : 1/12/2020 6:42 pm
LB Jamie Collins- Graham coached him for 2 years when he was LB coach in New England. 30 years old but had an all-pro level year for NE.

LB Blake Martinez- Graham was his position coach in 2018 when he coached GB LB's. Tackle machine but not an impactful player. Just okay but still an upgrade over Mayo/Ogletree.

I'd also say Isaiah Simmons in Round 1 (preferably after trading back a couple of spots) makes a ton of sense in a Collins type of role.
Based on what Judge said
Nine-Tails : 1/12/2020 6:49 pm : link
And the hiring of Graham. I would say Isaiah Simmons is a legitimate option. Count me in
Kyle Van Noy and Logan Ryan are 2 others who'd make sense
Eric on Li : 1/12/2020 6:55 pm : link
I suspect they get at least 1 or 2 guys who have spent time in Foxboro.
The upcoming FA class is weak for the most part
Jay on the Island : 1/12/2020 6:59 pm : link
but a lot of teams have significant cap room which means most of the FA's will be overpaid. The Giants need to avoid paying average players star money.

I am all for spending big on RT Jack Conklin and ER Yannick Ngakoue because they are both young talented building blocks.
I really liked Collins pre-draft. Figured he'd blow up the Combine.
Klaatu : 1/12/2020 7:04 pm : link
But he weighed in at 250 lbs. Not sure if he's a good comp for Simmons.

I mentioned Martinez in a couple of threads. We hear a lot about underachievers. Martinez is just the opposite. He was Sy'56's 23rd-ranked LB, and almost fell to the 5th Round in the 2016 draft. Love to have him now.

Weak? I don't think so. It depends on what you're looking for. It's a good year to be looking for an ILB or ER/OLB. Not so good if you're looking for OT's. Good year for DT's and DB's. Some very good TE's and WR's should be available, too (but I doubt we'll be looking for any in free agency). Not so good for IOL.

Van Noy would make a lot of sense for us. One of the smart things Vrabel did was bring in some guys who were used to the "Patriot way." Judge would be smart to do the same.
Do you think this eliminates 4-3

Edge guys like Ngakoue from Jacksonville?

Not at all, Ngakoue can play OLB in a 3-4 scheme.

Packers fans say he can't cover, not interested.
I think the Giants might look into a rehab project

for an edge rusher, to pen to a prove it deal.

Leonard Floyd of the Bears comes to mind. He has more upside than Markus Golden IMO and should cost less since he has always under achieved his draft status.

No so much a "rehab" proposal as a rookie "see what he CAN do and put him in a position to succeed." Would be a Patriot's type move to figure out how to use him correctly.

Most think the Bears will cut ties with him rather than pay him $14 mil plus this coming year.

Heck maybe the Giants could afford both Golden and Floyd.

in either player. Martinez doesn't do anything Connelly can't.

Hard pass on signing Collins who is past his prime.

I think Floyd has been miscast as an ER, and would be better at ILB. I don't see anything in him to show that he would be an elite ER.
I'd really like Simmons..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/13/2020 10:18 am : link
but I would hope if he's the pick, we would drop back a few slots and pick up some additional assets.

I also don't know what system Judge is envisioning - a player like simmons will be boom/bust based on the system.
None of the ILB's I mentioned...
Klaatu : 1/13/2020 10:24 am : link
In this thread are over 30, and all of them would be upgrades to what we have now at the position, including Martinez. If we're going to stick with the base 3-4 (and yes, I know, multiples and all that), we're going to need a massive upgrade at ILB, quantity as well as quality. Might as well start with free agency this year, and hedge our bet before the draft.
Have to (not want to) bring in an inside LB

His name isn’t Martinez anymore, he goes by Dennis Celery, due to a “boating accident”

That's the issue with picking a Floyd or Simmons so high in the draft. While this type of defender is certainly useful, it's not really an impact position where you burn top resources, imv.

Yes, but Connelly is coming off ACL. Most guys come back from that 100%, but we shouldn't just assume he'll be the same player he was.
