NFT: Joker Movie (spoilers included)

eric2425ny : 1/12/2020 11:37 pm
So I watched Joker tonight on demand. Great acting, disturbing film. My question is was anything real after the state cut funding and he couldn’t get meds about midway through the film?
All of it

With the exception of his girlfriend imo
The one that riddles me is whether Wayne is the father

You could trust all the adoption papers are legitimate or that it was the plot of a billionaire to discredit her and throw her in the asylum. Hopefully joker 2 tackles that.
I hope there isn’t a Joker 2

That movie doesn’t need a sequel, aside from all of the Batman movies that follow chronologically.

I thought it was clear her mother was simply fixated on Wayne and that he was not the father. It was an interesting plot device that helps explain his obsession with Bruce Wayne.
Oops - should be “his” mother, not her

Right before he goes on the De Niro show is where they add the doubt
Did he kill Zazie Beetz?
cjac : 1/13/2020 7:45 am : link
Are we to assume that happened?
Joker 2

No he still lives by a code of killing only those that have hurt him

Also confirmed in an interview

The apartment scene is the last time Zazie Beetz is seen in “Joker,” but Phillips revealed there was an additional beat planned for the film that would have not left Sophie’s fate up for debate. The director said the script included a cutaway moment during Arthur’s interview with Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) that showed Sophie watching the discussion on television. The shot would have confirmed outright that Arthur did not kill Sophie. Phillips cut the moment because he only wanted the movie to be told from Arthur’s point of view, and cutting to Sophie would have disrupted the film’s narrative structure.

my abosolute favortie part

of that movie is when you see him smoking in his mothers hospital room, indicating he doesn't give a fuck about her anymore and foreshadowing he's about to murder her.

It's not confirmed, but you have to think its going to happen considering the money it brought in. Either way it probably won't be for a while. The script itself will need to be pretty much perfect for Phoenix to get on board in an official capacity.

And that's a good thing. Don't want some hurried cash cow for round 2.

“Here’s the real truth about a sequel. While Joaquin and I have talked about it, and while touring the world with Warner Bros executives — going to Toronto, and Venice, and other places — of course, we’re sitting at dinner and they’re saying, ‘So, have you thought about…?’ But, talking about contracts, there’s not a contract for us to even write a sequel, we’ve never approached Joaquin to be in a sequel. Will that happen? Again, I just think the article was anticipatory at best.”

Crap, thought the whole point of the movie was that nobody knows

What was real and what was entirely in his head from almost the getgo.
I thought when he checked Bruce’s teeth it was to confirm

The mother’s story (i.e., that they are half-brothers). Otherwise, what was that about?

I think Wayne is the father and the adoption stuff was a cover up.

I think that is unfortunately still the case. One of my only critiques of the movie. I don't mind nuggets of ambiguity here and there, but when you bring the entire narrative into question, I can't help but feel like my time is being wasted.
Read an interesting bit with Phillips

where he said, in his mind, he left it vague if the Phoenix character is the actual Joker, nemesis of Batman, or someone who inspires someone to take up the mantle. That makes sense, based on the significant age difference between Fleck and Bruce Wayne. In this timeline Fleck would be at the very least closing in on 60 by the time Wayne took up the cowl.

Not a fan of “St. Elsewhere” I guess?

listened to the same interview on NPR podcast, this is why the film was titled "Joker" and not "The Joker"

also different movie but somewhat related looking forward to Robert Pattinson as the new Batman. He's really evolved as an actor since Twilight and this could be his mid career breakout

with Sophie was in his mind, i was so relieved... haha

I was actually sitting there and telling myself this wasnt realistic, and there was no way she would be interested in this weird creepy guy.
I read a theory
moespree : 1/13/2020 12:22 pm : link
That the entire film is imagined. The only thing real is the end when he's locked up and kills the psychiatrist talking to him. The theory is if you remember one of the first scenes where he's laughing uncontrollably talking to the original psychiatrist, there's a quick cut scene to him standing in all white in a padded room which looks exactly like the scenes at the end of the film. In this room he's banging his head against the wall waiting for someone. There was never any explanation for why they made this quick 5 second cut and the thought is that's real and that's him waiting for the final scene psychiatrist to enter the room, and while waiting, he imagines the entire story of the film. That's the "joke" he is thinking of in the final scene that he tells the psychiatrist she wouldn't get.

I have no real opinion either way on this theory. I think it could very well be true....or not. And that's one of the interesting things about this film that you really don't know and I'm not sure anyone's thoughts on what is real or fake can be seen as correct or wrong.
