So looking into the pros and cons of having a non FIOS/Actiontec router for my fios service.
here is my setup:
I use TIVO instead of FIOS boxes. Also FIOS uses MOCA tech.
I have a 1 gigabit service for internet.
I also have their phone service (because its cheaper to include)
I have hardwires to some places in my house
I have the Quantum Gateway router but i dont think i am getting the fast service that i am paying for it.
Now if i remove the router and use my own, what changes for my tivo boxes and etc.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Over WiFi the best I've gotten has been 481 up and 549 down while being in the same room as the router.
I bought the Quantum router from FiOS outright for $199 (I believe) instead of paying the monthly fee. I think I'd have paid over $300 for the router by now if I were "renting" it. I also have the Google WiFi hooked into it to create a mesh network and get more consistent speeds throughout the house. There was a room upstairs and on the other side of the house where I would lose connection (if I could get it) when I just used the router. Now using the mesh network, with a puck right in that room, I generally get speeds in the 80's for both up and down.
Hope that all helps.
there are many sites you can use.
one of the more popular ones is speedtest.net
If you're experiencing slowness changing the router may not fix it if your slowness is due to too many devices on your network, your browser, specific website, etc.
my tivo boxes are alittle older. I also have 2 tivo minis.
yes i paid for them 4 or 5 years ago.
No modem with FiOS.
