NFT: School me on using your own router instead of FIOS router

GMAN4LIFE : 1/13/2020 11:22 am
So looking into the pros and cons of having a non FIOS/Actiontec router for my fios service.

here is my setup:

I use TIVO instead of FIOS boxes. Also FIOS uses MOCA tech.
I have a 1 gigabit service for internet.
I also have their phone service (because its cheaper to include)
I have hardwires to some places in my house

I have the Quantum Gateway router but i dont think i am getting the fast service that i am paying for it.

Now if i remove the router and use my own, what changes for my tivo boxes and etc.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
if you get a comparable router

capable of >1 Gbps speeds, nothing will change other than your monthly bill.
more specifically

if you have ethernet cables running from your TiVo devices to the FIOS router, you would then just plug those into your new device.

If you're getting a router/firewall

Make sure the device doesn't just have 1Gbps ports on it, but that it is also capable of fire-walling 1Gbps. That item might be in the small print.

You're generally not going to get the advertised speeds

over WiFi. Hardwired is a different story. The best I've generally been able to get was 500 (or so) down and around 900 up with the Apple TV being hardwired in.

Over WiFi the best I've gotten has been 481 up and 549 down while being in the same room as the router.

I bought the Quantum router from FiOS outright for $199 (I believe) instead of paying the monthly fee. I think I'd have paid over $300 for the router by now if I were "renting" it. I also have the Google WiFi hooked into it to create a mesh network and get more consistent speeds throughout the house. There was a room upstairs and on the other side of the house where I would lose connection (if I could get it) when I just used the router. Now using the mesh network, with a puck right in that room, I generally get speeds in the 80's for both up and down.

Hope that all helps.
Have you done

any testing to check your actual bandwidth/speed?

there are many sites you can use.

one of the more popular ones is speedtest.net

If you're experiencing slowness changing the router may not fix it if your slowness is due to too many devices on your network, your browser, specific website, etc.
Just curious

How is the 4K through the TiVo system? Did you pay for the TiVo boxes?

I have issues with the FIOS router dropping in and out....

...and want to replace it for that reason. The problem I'm having is I'm not sure with what to replace it. Do I need separate modem and router? Is there one recommended over another?
Cut the cable

last month with Fios and they replaced my router with new one. Went from 400/400 to 100/100 and TV streaming working great. Pay a bit more for only have the Fios router but I think worth it. I don't have Fios cable or landlines anymore.
