Freddie Roach enters his third season as defensive line coach. Roach, a former Alabama All-SEC player and staff member at Alabama and South Alabama, was hired as assistant coach for the defensive line on Feb. 16, 2017.
Last season, Josiah Coatney (63) and Qaadir Sheppard (48) combined for 111 tackles and three forced fumbles. Sheppard produced a season-high 10.0 tackles for loss, while Markel Winters (4.0) and Benito Jones (3.0) paced the Rebels in sacks.
During his first season in Oxford, Roach coached a pair of NFL Draft picks in Breeland Speaks (second round) and Marquis Haynes (fourth round). The duo combined for 14.5 sacks, and both Rebels earned second team All-SEC honors as part of the Landshark defensive line. Haynes went on to finish as Ole Miss’ career leader in sacks (32.0) and tackles for loss (47.5) during the modern era.
Roach comes to Oxford from Tuscaloosa, where he served on Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide staff as director of player development since March 2015.
In his role as the Tide’s director of player development, Roach’s main focus was off-the-field activities of Alabama’s football student-athletes, serving as a resource in balancing the demands of academics, athletics and community outreach. He also served as a liaison for high school coaches, while assisting with Alabama camps and clinics. During his two seasons in the role, Alabama won back-to-back SEC titles and played for national titles in both years, winning the crown after the 2015 season.
Roach spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons as the defensive ends and outside linebackers coach at South Alabama under head coach Joey Jones. Roach helped the Jaguars end the 2013 season third nationally in sacks per game and 21st in tackles for loss per contest, while finishing second in the Sun Belt in pass, total and scoring defense. The 2014 defense was second in the Sun Belt in total defense.
Roach went to USA from Murray State, where he was the Racers’ defensive line coach while assisting with the strength and conditioning program during the 2012 season.
The previous fall, he coached the defensive line and was the director of strength and conditioning at East Mississippi Community College, helping lead the Lions to the NJCAA National Championship.
Roach spent three seasons (2008-10) as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Alabama, during which time the Crimson Tide won both the BCS national championship and Southeastern Conference title in 2009.
As a player, Roach was a four-year letterman at linebacker for the Crimson Tide from 2002-05, during which time he was named the National Freshman of the Year, a freshman All-American, was twice selected second team All-SEC and named to Alabama’s All-Decade Team for the 2000s. He signed as a free agent with the New England Patriots in 2006.
A native of Killen, Alabama, he made 194 tackles with 23 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles as a senior at Brooks High School. Roach earned his bachelor’s degree in human environmental sciences from The University of Alabama in 2008.
Roach and his wife, Ashley, have two daughters, Addison and Alexandria.
Was an assistant Strength & Conditioning coach while Judge was on Alabama's staff. Considering Judge's ties to Freddie Kitchens, I wonder if we would take his RB Coach (Stump Mitchell).
both coaches groused about their assistants getting HC gobs and then poaching their staffs. They were really miffed by it. So no surprise that Judge is going to Miami and possibly other teams, rather than raiding Belichick's NE staff....

I couldn't a clip of the exchange but did find this piece from an article.
Quote:
"We've always had sort of a mutual respect for how we take each other's people," Saban told Belichick. "It's one thing that I always try to emphasize to the guys. What I have a tough time with is we've had however many guys who've worked here who are at Georgia, Tennessee, whoever, wherever. When they get those jobs, and in most cases, you helped them, then they have a hard time understanding why they can't take your people. I want to help you get a job so you can try to take what I've tried to build here and destroy the continuity of what I have. The assistants don't understand why that's not a good thing."
"I'm happy for the people who've worked hard for me to get opportunities," Belichick said. "I want to see them build their own program. When they try to tear down our program. That's kind of where the line, I feel gets crossed."
Gotta wonder if these moves are ok with Bill or not, since they are once removed from NE coach - ( New Window )
I would think Bill would be OK with it as they are no longer on his staff. My take on his and Saban's comments there is that they would be unhappy with a current/former assistant of theirs raiding their current staff's.
RE: Jeff, I have no idea how you speak with such authority on Â
LBs coach?

So far, 2 holdovers, 2 ex BB, 1 ex Bama ... Nick, you’re up again.
Pepper is the defensive coordinator for one of the new XFL teams.
Garrett was on Saban's staff with Miami in 05
;)

And that is the path for Judge to be successful

“We’re gonna play violent!!” Goes along with what Judge said in his presser.
And I am ok with that.
I like this guy ... play violent ... did anyone miss a class ? No sir !
Not sure if you're serious.
Pretty silly if you are.

He would have had at Mississippi State. Except this is not college.

Why, are you confident with the staff so far?

Your confidence level with the staff means dogshit...you know that right? You have no connections with anyone in the NFL. You don't know anything.
How confident were you with the James Bettcher hire? I remember the overall fan reaction being pretty positive. How did that turn out?
Maybe unbunch your panties and lets see how it plays out.
You’re right, I’ll just get back in line and salute whatever comes down.

Gee, and I thought we were allowed to give our opinions on here.

That's not what I'm implying & you know it. I have no freaking clue about these guys & don't pretend otherwise.
So does Graham. Tomlinson is all of a sudden the prized pupil. Haha
Holy shit, that's a big guy..
Seems to be the teacher type Judge is talking about.
How were his DL at Ole Miss?
