Dolphins Defense played mostly man coverage

CMicks3110 : 1/13/2020 11:09 pm
and had the most non-zone coverage snaps of any team in the NFL. It also ranked 32nd in coverage grade according to PFF. Of course, their starting corners were Nik Needham and Nate Brooks.

Will be interesting if Graham continues this trend with the NYG, and if the Giants target cornerback early in 2020 draft.

Quote:

Only Detroit, New England and Houston played more man-coverage snaps than the Miami Dolphins, who ultimately earned PFF’s lowest coverage grade in 2019. Their 242 zone-coverage snaps were the third-fewest of any team in the NFL.

as coordinators or head coaches. Romeo Crennel in Houston, Flores/Graham in Miami, and obviously BB in NE. We might go Okudah.

Isaiah Simmons ball out tonight, coupled with Judge and Graham talking about how they value players with scheme versatility, it’s safe to say that Isaiah Simmons will more than likely be their top target come draft time
This is good news for DeAndre Baker

He made his name in college by being excellent in man-coverage. He was plain and simply a shutdown corner at Georgia. Bettcher had him playing zone the whole year and voila everyone thinks he sucks.

Bettcher and Shurmur were very similar in that they both refused to adapt their schemes in any way to fit their personnel's strengths/weaknesses. They stuck to "what got them there" game in and game out, to the extreme extent of not even making adjustments at halftime or at any point in the game. Hence why Pederson coached circles around them both and the Giants would always lose the 2nd half to the Eagles.

Fuck both of them.

Hence why Judge's talk of "scheme versatility" has been music to so many BBI ears.
The quote says it all - all 4 heavy man teams are BB tree

so I would expect Judge (and Graham) follow a similar trend.

Whether it's via FA (Logan Ryan, James Bradberry) or draft (Okudah, Simmons) I'd expect to see some guys who can cover added.

I call it "Cover zero". Hope that there is a bad throw or the receiver drops it.

Lots of man coverage in Detroit too.

28. DETROIT LIONS

Head coach Matt Patricia asked his defensive backs to play 347 total snaps of man coverage in 2019, the most of any defense in the NFL, but that did not go as well as he would have likely hoped. Darius Slay (56.9 coverage grade), Rashaan Melvin (47.3) Justin Coleman (59.1), Tavon Wilson (73.7) and Tracy Walker (76.0) combined to allow 149 first downs from 365 combined targets in coverage, and they gave up a passer rating of 105.5 in the process. The Detroit defense as a whole made very few plays, tying Dallas and Arizona for the fewest interceptions (seven) while allowing the fourth-most touchdown passes (33) in the NFL.
I absolutely HATE zone coverage...
EricJ : 1/14/2020 6:53 am : link
and in my opinion, it serves to cover up for a lack of cover skills by your back 7... and/or because your front 4 cannot stop the run and they need the rest of the defense facing the line of scrimmage.
Who cares?

What matters is that the defense knows what it is supposed to do. And that coaches aren’t trying to fit round pegs in square holes with their players and scheme.

I don’t get this whole man vs zone obsession.

Often wants to press the WRs, disrupt timing, and rush the passer. It’s all good if you have the guys. But with our personnel it means our turtle speed LBs locked in man and our tremendous “we’ll get there someday” pass rush applying “pressure.”

I can see why we didn’t man up more given those weaknesses. But, I hope we can get enough this year to negate these flaws.

It is really weird, especially given Judge's comments about scheme versatility. The assumption here doesn't seem to line up.
Zone coverage..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/14/2020 8:50 am : link
can be really effective if you have quick LB's to close down gaps and safeties that close as well. It's also good as a change of pace, but playing a zone most of the time, especially a soft one, reminds me of read-and-react - you give a good offense and a good QB time to diagnose the soft spots and target them.

3rd & 3 and Patrick Graham has one guy with his hand in the dirt. Rest of the box is roaming not allowing Eli to figure the D out pre-snap.

5 man blitz with man coverage and a high safety

Patrick Graham said that he'd run a multiple defense in Miami.

I just finished going back through the Giants-Dolphins game and he was running a 3-4 with a safety in the box A LOT. I'd assume the Giants run majority 3-4 with the personnel they have.
