and had the most non-zone coverage snaps of any team in the NFL. It also ranked 32nd in coverage grade according to PFF. Of course, their starting corners were Nik Needham and Nate Brooks.
Will be interesting if Graham continues this trend with the NYG, and if the Giants target cornerback early in 2020 draft.
Only Detroit, New England and Houston played more man-coverage snaps than the Miami Dolphins, who ultimately earned PFF’s lowest coverage grade in 2019. Their 242 zone-coverage snaps were the third-fewest of any team in the NFL. |

Bettcher and Shurmur were very similar in that they both refused to adapt their schemes in any way to fit their personnel's strengths/weaknesses. They stuck to "what got them there" game in and game out, to the extreme extent of not even making adjustments at halftime or at any point in the game. Hence why Pederson coached circles around them both and the Giants would always lose the 2nd half to the Eagles.
Fuck both of them.
Hence why Judge's talk of "scheme versatility" has been music to so many BBI ears.
Whether it's via FA (Logan Ryan, James Bradberry) or draft (Okudah, Simmons) I'd expect to see some guys who can cover added.
I call it "Cover zero". Hope that there is a bad throw or the receiver drops it.

28. DETROIT LIONS
Head coach Matt Patricia asked his defensive backs to play 347 total snaps of man coverage in 2019, the most of any defense in the NFL, but that did not go as well as he would have likely hoped. Darius Slay (56.9 coverage grade), Rashaan Melvin (47.3) Justin Coleman (59.1), Tavon Wilson (73.7) and Tracy Walker (76.0) combined to allow 149 first downs from 365 combined targets in coverage, and they gave up a passer rating of 105.5 in the process. The Detroit defense as a whole made very few plays, tying Dallas and Arizona for the fewest interceptions (seven) while allowing the fourth-most touchdown passes (33) in the NFL.
I don’t get this whole man vs zone obsession.
I can see why we didn’t man up more given those weaknesses. But, I hope we can get enough this year to negate these flaws.
I don’t get this whole man vs zone obsession.
It is really weird, especially given Judge's comments about scheme versatility. The assumption here doesn't seem to line up.

3rd & 3 and Patrick Graham has one guy with his hand in the dirt. Rest of the box is roaming not allowing Eli to figure the D out pre-snap.
5 man blitz with man coverage and a high safety

I just finished going back through the Giants-Dolphins game and he was running a 3-4 with a safety in the box A LOT. I'd assume the Giants run majority 3-4 with the personnel they have.
