Jordan Raanan @JordanRaanan

As new coach Joe Judge tries to fill out his staff, he interviewed Mike Shula on Monday for the Giants offensive coordinator job, per sources. Shula was the Giants OC the last two years under Pat Shurmur. Helped in the development of Daniel Jones.

2 years. We all know Shurmur was calling plays. It’s not beyond the realm Shula could be a good candidate under Judge.

I realize there is a perception problem with anyone associated with the outgoing regime, but doesn’t mean this is automatically a bad thing.

I completely agree and claim ignorance. I am not going to speak positively or negatively about Shula because other than looking at his resume, I have no idea what his strengths and weaknesses are as an OC. I think FMIC said his weakness may he WR routes, but I can’t speak on this at all. He did also say a strength may be how he utilizes the RBs out of the backfield, so that makes me happy if true.

But you are right....I was so upset with our team that I did want EVERYONE to go, save the ST and WR coaches. And they both have been retained.
honestly

we can do much worse than Shula.

Fair points re: previous coaches. And it’s entirely possible this was merely being thorough, and Shula won’t be hired.

But sadly, all we have to do as Giants fans right now it worry about coaching hires
This is one interview I would love to see.

I would love to hear an insiders thoughts on what went wrong, and what they feel went well. I would also like to know what Shula was responsible for, and what we can attribute to Shurmur.

Did Judge not say during his PC that he was going to evaluate everyone who was on Shurmur's staff? Would this not be a part of the evaluation process?

If that's the case he should have interviewed Betcher too.

Probably because he watched film of the giants defense for 4 seconds and knew Bettcher was incompetent
A 4th reason Shula can make sense is...
5BowlsSoon : 1/14/2020 12:22 pm : link
4. Judge said he wanted to use someone with prior coaching experience to fall back on. Shula is 54 years old and has been a HC at Alabama for 3 years, so I guess this may count for something.

Although both Gruden and Garrett have too.

I'd rather the HC experience be in the NFL if that's the case.

1. He and Judge have a tie at Alabama. It appears Judge prefers guys with ties to Patriots or Crimson Tide.

2. Shula has OC experience at Tampa and Carolina and even was voted OC of the year in 2015 when Carolina went to the SB.

3. Jones is comfortable with Shula. I just have this “feeling” later today we will see SHULA GIANTS OC.

I mean think about it, have you heard anyone else being interviewed for the position? How come?

And are any of those bad things? I don't think so.

Eli was once "comfortable" with McAdoo. I think we need to remove that from the decision-making process from now on.
this would be a very uninspiring choice

Proven mediocrity. One good year at Carolina out of 7 years as an OC. Hopefully this is more a thank you for your efforts type interview.

Mediocre. That’s what I thought when Shula was hired. Won’t be awful but won’t be dynamic either. I have seen nothing the last two years to alter that judgment

Did anybody know about a Graham interview before he named DC?

I Have mixed feelings. I thought they might sign him for QB
Blue21 : 1/14/2020 2:17 pm : link
coach. Maybe this is why they didn't. The advantage would be some continuity with Jones. He knows Jones very well after coaching him last year. I'm sure there's a comfort level between the two. Not sure what his full responsibilities were last year as OC/QB coach. As we all know Shurmur did the play calls. Now if they keep him Judge might be able to keep much of the same language and many of the plays and add some of his own mix and schemes and Shula's mix from past experiences with the current playbook. As Judge also said "I want to know what a player can do not what he can't do". Who would better know that now than Shula. Mara, so it's been said, was not happy with last years coaches but that doesn't necessarily mean Shula. Oline coach and Shurmur are gone and probably TE coach and DB coaches along with the LB coach. They already have a new DC and Dline coach. Have to leave this to Judge if he thinks it can work for the best. Remember too Shula was let go two years ago then the Giants signed him. Norv took over and presto him and Rivera are gone. And for all we know Gruden and Norv may not want to come to New York. On the other hand I wouldn't be surprised if it's someone we haven't heard of or thought of.
Shula must have some pictures of Gettleman
TheWalrus : 1/14/2020 5:20 pm : link
It was obvious Shurmur didn't want him and it seems he's got some advocates inside the Giants building.

He's not a bad coach but what exactly did he do the last two years? He's far from an inspiring candidate and I hope we go in another direction.
hopefully no
mdc1 : 1/14/2020 6:39 pm : link
if much of that was his offense this year, no.
Gettleman
AdamBrag : 1/14/2020 6:43 pm : link
is likely a big fan of Shula. He promoted him to OC in Carolina and then when he came to the Giants, he brought him on, as well.

There is a decent chance he is advocating for him to be OC now, potentially arguing that Shula contributed to game plans, but it was Shurmur who couldn't execute on them on game day due to bad play calling.

We’re in a uproar when he was hired two years ago now they are ok with him really being the OC. This is nothing more then gettleman getting involved this organization is infuriating

Some people will have whiplash after the last few weeks.

First it was Ron Rivera to the rescue - it was all but certain, he said nice things about Gettleman - and then he was off to Washington without ever being mentioned.

Then, the next Parcells was on deck, with glowing things said about him and from him regarding the Giants and Gettleman. He never so much as speaks to them either.

If an asshat had come here three weeks ago and dropped a hint that Judge would be the next HC and Graham and Shula would be his coordinators, he would have been eaten alive.

I'm going in with an open mind about Judge and Graham, since I didn't have any real favorites across the HC candidates, but I don't see how anyone could have watched the last two years and walks away happy that Shula could own this offense.
Shula thoughts?
5BowlsSoon : 1/15/2020 8:19 am : link
I know I have gone on record saying Shula will still be our OC, but I now have this revelation I would like to share...

Shula was interviewed on MONDAY, but notice....why hasn’t he been announced yet? I know it could come out today, but I’m now wondering, maybe the Shula interview didn’t exactly wow our HC. If it had, I would have thought he would have announced it yesterday.

Maybe I’m reading too much into this especially this being only the second day after the interview, but I’m holding out hope that maybe another candidate has come forward and may have surpassed Shula, or maybe Judge is still not satisfied and has expanded his search. I know this is probably wishful thinking......

I do believe by the end of today we will know who he is. So keep hitting the refresh button here.

Or if you don’t know by the end of the week, it’s possible they are looking at candidates that are still in the NFL playoffs.
