Possible that the OC is already known, just not announced?

GiantNatty : 1/14/2020 10:18 am
It's a little cart-leading-the-horse that the Giants have selected a QB coach but not the OC. Wouldn't the QB coach be someone that the OC would normally hire?

Is it possible, then, that the Giants have already come to an agreement with the OC - and that the OC has given his approval for the other offensive coaches the Giants have hired - but that it hasn't been made public yet? Maybe because his team is still in the playoffs (or just finished the college playoffs)? Is it common for assistant coaches to be hired before the coordinator is hired?

Incidentally, other than head coach, I think this is the most important hire this offseason.
probably

they may have somebody selected but there could be strings with the other team they are coming from that needs to be worked out.
Could be currently employed

they're thinking about someone whose contract expires today??

would guess yes.

I would argue DC is just as important.
I’m sure they have an idea of who it will be

My concern, is that it is, in fact, Shula. He was already in the building and could have already given his thoughts on the new QB coach, which is why he was hired. It could be someone in the playoffs, but it may not be that secretive.

The answer could already be sitting in the building. *shrug*

Been going back and forth on that, but if that's the case, why haven't they just announced he's staying?

Absolutely. The only time this team has sniffed relevancy in the last 7 years, it was when their defense was playing great.

To be fair the team hasnt officially announced a single assistant coaching hire. It's all been second hand reports from media
If it's Garrett, we could do worse
Poktown Pete : 1/14/2020 11:20 am : link
though having once been a HC, would he be poached should the Giants have a successful couple of seasons going forward?

Possibly. But that's true for any OC we hire. It's either a possible stepping stone to HC or a way back to HC.

Either way, I'm more concerned that the OC is a good one than how long they'll be with the team.
I don't think
DavidinBMNY : 1/14/2020 8:24 pm : link
They announce anything officially until all coaches are announced.

If Shula remains the OC, he probably already is under contract anyway, and as such no big news expect to disappointed fans looking for a big name like Turner or Gruden or something.

Yup Shula has HC experience too. Damn its him
It’s Shula or O’Shea

I'm surprised how many people are confident that more than likely our next OC is already decided upon and is coaching one of the 4 remaining teams in the NFL playoffs. For those of you with this hunch, who do you think it is? Can we narrow it down based on the offensive assistants the Giants have hired so far (or are rumored to be hiring)?

O'Shea would make sense based on the Schuplinsky hire. But then again what would be stopping the Giants from announcing that? Why did the Dolphins fire O'Shea, anyway?

I have to say I am surprised how long it took for the Giants to decide/announce that they were going to interview Shula for OC. It just kind of seems like that was something we would have heard early last week or not at all. Who knows though.
Oh never mind
Leg of Theismann : 1/15/2020 1:25 am : link
I just read about the fact that Schuplinsky and O'Shea didn't really get along. But still... anyone know why the latter was fired?

Not really. The position coaches are under the head coach same as coordinators, it's just that the coordinators get paid more. The coordinators are the strategists, the position coaches are the teachers. True--they all need to be on the same page (and there's crossover as well in terms of skills) for it to be a finely tuned machine, but it's the head coach's job to make sure that's the case. Judge doesn't need to know who the OC will be before hiring his QB coach or any other coach, he just needs to know that the two of them share his philosophy/vision/approach.

O'Shea?

Does this mean they'll pay half their home games in Miami?
The delay makes me think that it's Garrett

Keep in mind that candidates with prior HC experience
Diver_Down : 1/15/2020 6:26 am : link
are also being considered in Jax. For someone who is looking to get a HC gig again, the quicker way would be in Jax. With Tommy no longer there to be the scapegoat, Dave and Doug will be on the hot seat. A OC like Garrett or Caldwell would likely be elevated to HC on an interim basis, and have the inside track to being named the permanent HC.

Judge isn't going anywhere so the only opportunity would be to be a candidate in the next HC hiring cycle elsewhere.
I don't think it's Shula
LakeGeorgeGiant : 1/15/2020 7:19 am : link
That said, the opinion of Shula around here is unnecessarily negative.

I see the Bettcher hate. Shula may not be a choice that gets the fans excited, but you can do a lot worse than Shula, and if Jones is comfortable with him a ca see e can be made for it.
