NFT: Peloton

Pep22 : 1/14/2020 2:32 pm
Setting aside the notion of price, I'd like to get an opinion on this product, the classes etc.

Thus far, via conversations with friends, it seems to be a favorable consensus.

I anticipate using it 3-4 rides per week (mixing that with the gym, swimming etc.).

Please let me know what you think of it if you have it.
I use it some but my wife is a daily regular
jvm52106 : 1/14/2020 2:36 pm : link
and absolutely loves it. Classes vary on intensity and type and they do keep you pretty involved. I think it is a great mix in piece for your overall workouts.
I've had it 4 weeks now
cjac : 1/14/2020 2:41 pm : link
and i can tell you i've never liked a piece of exercise equipment more than this thing. I absolutely love it.

I'm on it 3 or 4 times a week, either doing a 30 or 45 minute class. I feel better, my legs feel way way stronger and my back issues have seemed to be a thing of the past.

There are a ton of classes you can take, i've done 1 or 2 live classes but there is no benefit to do that.

Also keep in mind
cjac : 1/14/2020 2:43 pm : link
even though its going to cost you $2500 to $3000, you can get an interest free loan and make $70 payments for it over 3 years.
Have no knowledge of Peloton
lawguy9801 : 1/14/2020 2:44 pm : link
but as a general matter, I've found that doing free home YouTube workouts has gotten me into shape as well as or better than any gym or paid exercise program.
You might..

I've heard hot, skinny young wives can be afraid of them at first

just FYI.
there is a major flaw in Peloton's business model
Giantsfan79 : 1/14/2020 2:49 pm : link
you can buy their bike for $2500 and it comes with a built in TV where you can subscribe to their fitness channel for $39 a month.

Or you can buy a plastic clip tray that attaches any tablet to any exercise bike. You then download Peloton's app on your tablet which will cost you $14 per month and you have full access to all their content but you are paying $14 not $39. Provided you already have a bike, or can get one for less than $2500, and you're good to go.
i've only heard good things
UConn4523 : 1/14/2020 2:49 pm : link
will be getting one eventually. Hurt my knee so i'm trying to decrease running and increase biking. No desire to join a gym.
Buy a much cheaper (good) spin bike,
Mr. Bungle : 1/14/2020 2:49 pm : link
get cadence and speed sensors for it (I recommend Wahoo), and use the Peloton app on a tablet.

You'll get a very similar experience for way less money.
Depends.
jnoble : 1/14/2020 2:49 pm : link
Do you have a model-attractive trophy wife and live in a 10 million dollar mansion with windows overlooking a major city or valley and both of you seem to have nothing else to do during the day like work? Those seem to be requirements according to the commercials.
My wife bought one almost a year ago.
CRinCA : 1/14/2020 2:57 pm : link
She rides it at least 5x per week meeting various mileage/timing goals and absolutely loves it.

Another bonus- it's almost noise-free as opposed to my loud ass treadmill.
great product
bigbluehoya : 1/14/2020 2:57 pm : link
I won't argue with anyone who notes the cost, but I will say that if you actually use it, and you break down the math over time, it's isn't unreasonable.

solid piece of equipment, great community, great instructors.
I understand the workarounds
UConn4523 : 1/14/2020 3:03 pm : link
that might work for some, I just prefer not to jerry rig stuff to save a couple bucks. most good stationary bikes are around $1k anyway, then add on the tablet and such and you are around $1500. Of course you can drop the quality of the bike and save more, but I wouldn't do that personally.

Its really the subscription that sucks. You'd think actual Peleton bike users would get a discount on the monthly membership. $500 per year after already spending $2,500 is rough.

I recently
Pete in MD : 1/14/2020 3:13 pm : link
got one and so far so good. I'm currently on a 7 day workout streak. Being that it's right in my house, it's so easy to jump on and take a 30-45 minute spin class. The rides can be very challenging but the whole community aspect adds to motivation to push yourself. I try to do live classes but there are a ton of archived ones you can take on-demand.
Had mine for 2 years and its awesome.
GMAN4LIFE : 1/14/2020 3:19 pm : link
Sure you can buy a bike and a zwift and this and that. But this is all in and just works.

Just stay clear from the Official Peloton Member Page. A bunch of psychos, PeloCelebs, and MLM scheme peoples are in there.

Yes you read that correctly. peloCelebs.

Wait a minute... so the videos that I've always interpreted as a major selling point and benefit of the machine cost about 500 dollars a year?

Fuck that.

35 years old. Former swimmer, pitcher, weightlifter.. 2 shoulder surgeries later I've been in a fitness lull for a decade. Never cycled, never did spin classes...

I'm about to do my 50th ride in the 2 month period. My wife is about to hit 75.

I love it.

Financing is terrific and there is a 30 day in home trial.

Do it.

great advice all the way around

Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 1/14/2020 3:48 pm : link
and absolutely love it. Never thought I would do the classes but I am pretty well addicted to them and the product. There are cheaper options but frankly, it gives me a lot of joy so if it costs a little bit more I am okay with it. We justified the monthly cost based on the fact that me, my wife and my daughter, when she is home, can use it. My daughter is a college athlete and finds the workout worthwhile when she is home on break as a difference from her normal workout.
We bought ours

last year b/c we have two young kids and trying to figure out a time when one of us could go to the gym became a pain in the butt. I basically rode every other day for the last year. Having a machine in our house forces us to workout more. I don't have any issues with it. Love the option of hopping on after 10pm or before 6am. I do a live class every once in awhile but mostly ride the OnDemand classes.

The savings aren't a couple of bucks, and it's really not a jerry-rigged setup. You can do the whole thing with very good quality equipment (just sold separately, not as one bundle) for about $700-800.

And most people already have a tablet, so there's not a new purchase required there in many people's cases.

And there's more independence with a custom setup, too. If you don't want to do Peloton classes anymore, you just drop the app subscription, and you still have everything else. With the Peloton cycle, if you stop the subscription, you basically have an overpriced bike with a broken TV screen on it.

to see if everyone who has one is still as enthusiastic. Not being a dick by assuming that everyone here is as lazy and fat as I am, just genuinely curious.

If it's still getting regular use than the money spent is money very well spent. Regular exercise is addictive and if you're hooked after the first month you should be pretty good.

I used to play basketball twice a week and would get the shakes if we missed a night, now I'm settling in to an early dinner and chilling on the porch or the couch. If Peloton is the answer, I'd sign up.

Great job! I took sugars and bread out too, similar workout & similar dramatic results. Nothing against the Peloton though, itís a great piece of equipment which we have at our gym, but the diet changes are key and most impactful.

Just wait another month and grab your choice of treadmill that sold for a multiple of what they'll be asking for it on eBay, and grab a small flatscreen to put in front of it to give you something to watch.
