@AdamSchefter
LSU’s passing game coordinator Joe Brady has told people today that he is planning to return to the NFL and the Carolina Panthers, per league sources.
Get a lot of hype. Curious how it will all actually work out.
Comes down to the QB situation I think (assuming Cam is gone). They have some decent skill position players. Wonder if they try and get aggressive and trade up for a QB this year.
He probably wanted to come to the Giants, but when Tepper opens his wallet, promises him anything he wants in terms of research, facilities and is going to give him any assistant he wants, pretty hard to say no. Time will tell, but if Tepper stays out of the football side of things (big if) and doesn't end up like Snyder or Jerrah, they could have some real success there.
2013–2014 William & Mary (LB coach)
2015–2016 Penn State (Grad asst)
2017–2018 New Orleans Saints (Off Asst)
2019–present LSU (PGC)
I mean he's like 30, so some players will actually be older than him. Plus his highest job has been passing game coordinator for a college team, for one whole year. He's never called plays and never been an OC. In 10 years maybe, but now we can do better
Great point...he will be a head coach in a few years if successful. That is why I always preferred the seasoned, older coordinators that were not going to leave in a year or so, like Norv Turner, Wade Phillips, etc.
Did we have any chance at this guy whatsoever? Would have been nice to have him coaching up DJ.
It’s not the New York Giants way to actually get who they want..
Giants always sleeping at the wheel. It’s not a mystery why this Organization has been pathetic for last several years.. let’s just hope this new HC is the real deal..
BBI Propaganda Machine ("BBIPM") out in full force discrediting Brady.
Of course, had he come to the Giants, the BBIPM would simply switch the dial over to "sliced bread" and Brady would be hailed as a great choice...
I'm not discrediting the guy. I think he was the driving force behind the title. Yes, it happened with an absolutely ridiculous amount of talent on offense. But they had a lot of the same players in 2018 and didn't do anything close to this. He did a great job this season, and I'd have been doing cartwheels had we gotten him. He was, by far, my #1 choice as OC.
Frankly, I thought we might have been waiting to hire an OC because we had Brady in toe. Just not sure, at this point, what we are waiting for. Maybe it's Garrett's contract to expire, which happens today.
Oh, I know. There are always black marks on someone's resume. I think it's pretty obvious why his value is where it is, and it isn't just the talent there. He innovated that offense. Yes, there may be growing pains for him in calling a game, but he'll learn. But it's hard to deny the NFL level concepts he brought to LSU. And if they thought he was so replaceable, why did LSU offer him such an enormous extension?
Did we have any chance at this guy whatsoever? Would have been nice to have him coaching up DJ.
Last night, I said I thought it was pretty unlikely. The hidden benefit of Carolina pay Rhule that insane contract was that it left them wiggle room to overpay someone like Joe Brady too.
All things being equal, the Giants could've matched any offer for Brady, but if price went beyond (or even approached) what they were already paying Judge, then they would never pull the trigger.
RE: RE: It seems like the Panthers have all the elements of a successful Â
It's entirely possible Cam.Newton comes back. I'm sure he'd benefit from a different offensive approach.
Yea - the injuries are very concerning, but he had started to turn a corner as a passer with Norv Turner as HC. He was on pace for a 3900 passing yard, 32 passing TD, 10 ints, and near-70% completion percentage season before he had that shoulder injury. Maybe worth a flier for one more year.

I liked him, too. Seemed to be a very quick study in his short stay with the Saints.
Was the LSU extension big? I thought someone posted last night it was $3M/3yrs....?

Well, we really have no idea how this thing all went down. Not only do we not know the contract, but he could have just preferred to go to Carolina or to join up with Rhule. We have no idea whether Judge reached out to him or wanted the guy anyway. So there are too many variables to speculate at this point.
However, I would have really liked him for this team. I think he has a bright future and will really help that offense.
but there’s countless examples of college whiz kid coordinators who end up realizing that the NFL ain’t so easy. Hope he succeeds but let’s not cry that we didn’t get this guy.
I like the idea of tapping young smart college OCs to do their magic in the nfl. I’m sure he will be successful.
Sometimes they flop, sometimes they don't. Kliff Kingsbury was pretty damn successful in his first year in AZ with a rookie QB and a terrible OL. In any event, Brady has NFL experience, even if it is in a low level role for the Saints. That is how he learned the offense in the first place.
Lol. I admit, losing Rhule to them did hurt and made me not wish them well....at first.
But then I realized, Rhule got an offer he couldn’t refuse so he took it. I can’t blame him and I can’t blame the billionaire owner for giving him Such a rich offer. He was just using his resources he had to win the game.
We lost Rhule and now we lost Brady, another hot young mind I was hoping for. Oh well....I guess I better start to appreciate “Boring” Mike Shula more because I think this may be my next 3 years.
would be Panthers moving up to get a QB. Tepper seems like he will pretty much do whatever it takes. NYG could be sitting pretty with a defensive guy falling to 4 or being a trade partner w CAR
I have yet to see anything listing the contract details for Brady. The contract for Rhule is 7 years, $62 million before incentives. I believe the contract for Judge is 5x5.
This is what I'm curious about. Tepper is an open checkbook right now and to be honest, good for him. There is no cap on coaching talent and he's going for what he feels is the best. Honestly, it feels like Jerry when he took over Dallas in 1989 and fired everyone and gave Jimmy Johnson a 10 year contract. Everyone thought he was nuts. George Steinbrenner comes to mind as well.
What I'm curious about, if Tepper blows up the salary structure for coaches, what the blow back will be from his fellow owners who won't like the precedent. But Tepper is a billionaire, and most billionaires don't make their money by giving a shit what their competition thinks.

There was a report that many owners were unhappy about the Rhule signing because of exactly what you said. Of course, just two years ago, the Raiders gave Gruden 10 years $100 million. Gruden had already been an NFL coach, so it's a different story, but I did read that the owners were frustrated with Tepper.
But guess what? Too bad for them. If you have the Giants' or Panthers' resources, use them to your advantage. Sign a coach if you think he is a transcendent guy. Sign as many scouts as possible. Build the biggest analytics division possible. Information is power, as Stefanski said today. The Giants have the money to spend to acquire that information. There is no reason our analytics department should be four computer folks.

NYG were *this close* to a grand slam offseason. Not taking anything from JJ, but Panthers fans have got to be very pleased.

It doesn't sound like the Giants ever had a shot at him; only time they were mentioned was in connection with Martindale and the chance he came as OC.
But, yea, that makes the sting of not getting Rhule a little sharper. I really, really wanted this guy as our OC.

Overrated.

Norv Turner as OC*

However, last year, that was the Browns.
I don't think people are making that assumption. We were just hoping, I think, particularly with the OC spot still conveniently vacant.
Think how LSU feels....
Well at least we have Shula. Take that
Nah, I don't care. I hated the Browns this year, but I won't feel the same way about the Panthers next year.

Too bad he didn't work for the Dolphins, he'd already be in the staff.
