Iowa OT Tristan Wirfs declares for the NFL Draft

Anakim : 1/14/2020 7:00 pm
That's a big one. He's definitely going to be in the conversation as a top-10 pick.

Gonna be interesting to see who OT1 is, with Wirfs, Wills, and Thomas. And I guess some like Becton, too.
There’s buzz that some folks believe he’ll need to kick inside
Saos1n : 1/14/2020 7:03 pm : link
To OG in the NFL. Patiently awaiting Sy’s write ups, although he didn’t post any of his Prospects to Watch this year. Makes you wonder if he isn’t going to contribute to BBI this year. I’m sure he’s busy. Guess we’ll find out

Don’t pretend to know a lick about OL prospects but in my “this probably means nothing” analysis I think Wills is the guy if we go OL early
Just looking at
ryanmkeane : 1/14/2020 7:14 pm : link
and watching Wirfs play he reminds me of Andrus Peat
Becton is an absolute mammoth
90.Cal : 1/14/2020 7:15 pm : link
Wirfs reminds me of Brandon Scherff
Thomas could be a franchise OLT

+ there is at least another half dozen very good OT prospects in this years class... not to mention alot of talent centers as well.
Not one tackle is worth the 4th pick
uconngiant : 1/14/2020 7:19 pm : link
Trade down or draft BPA

I like Simmons a lot who can cover, blitz and tackle
Which one
Fast Eddie : 1/14/2020 7:21 pm : link
Is a sixty minute, punch in the nose kinda guy.......I’ll take a bunch of those

Thomas-franchise? Have you watched him in the last 3 games he played? I would not pick this guy in Top 10 and would go Willis before him hands down. just sayin.....

lets see how he grades out in the combines
Danny Pinter - ORT - Ball State

A possible later round pick. He projects inside.
(He is the grandson of a close friend).
PFF (Cam Mellor Jan 6, 2020) rated him #4 overall OL; but outside of that I don't recall any mention of him.

Anyone familiar with Danny?

BTW, he is a great kid, very intelligent (already graduated after 3 1/2 years), former TE. A leader and very athletic per his coach. I'd love to see him in Giant blue despite the fact he is a die hard Bears fan :)
I’ve professed my love for Becton on this board many times
Earl the goat : 1/14/2020 7:49 pm : link
I’m going out on a line here
I bet Sy56 makes him his top OT
I’ve watched a lot of Louisville games. I think he’s got the most talent of all the Tackles
In the brief
Eric from BBI : Admin : 1/14/2020 7:53 pm : link
videos I've seen, Wirf interests me the most right now of all of the OLs (but it's early).
I love both Wirfs and Epenesa

Thomas is NOT a franchise left tackle, you might wanna go back and watch tape buddy. Hell hes sliding so much right now he’s not even the no.1 OT in a lot of people’s boards anymore.

Absolutely correct sir. A lot of people have Wirfs and Willis ahead of Thomas now. I’m expecting him to slide even more

Jonathan Ogden-like size and quick feet.

To OG in the NFL.

Who said that?

GBN has him as their #5 overall prospect right now. Wirfs is my favorite guy for the Giants. I watched 5-6 complete Iowa games this season and never once saw him beaten around the edge. He's massive, yet a terrific athlete. He gets to the second level quickly. He can pull and be used on screens because of his quickness. He still can improve his technique (against bull rushes and staying on run blocks), but we're not talking about an Ereck Flowers who's completely technique deficient or Orlando Brown who was sort of an one trick pony (power/size). He was the first true freshman to start at offensive line under Kirk Ferentz. He played left tackle as a freshman, but moved to right tackle for the past 2 seasons. I think his upside is tremendous.

He turns 21 years-old in 10 days.
For you, Earl.
Klaatu : 1/14/2020 8:42 pm : link
Boylhart loves Becton

(Although he does have Jackson and Thomas graded a tiny bit higher)
Wirfs needs to seriously be in play at # 4
Dave in PA : 1/14/2020 9:13 pm : link
Kid is super strong and athletic with a presence and intensity to his game. He also has a wrestling background, which I like in any lineman. I’ve been hoping he would declare and hope he’s in blue come draft day too.

Thx Klaatu. Good read
Combine and/or Pro Days are going to be critical in final ranking

If any of these guys demonstrate obvious LT movement skills to go along with requisite size/strength, they will start to distance themselves from the pack.

Appears there are starting quality RTs in this draft. Not yet clear there are LTs. The fact that a right-handed QB has impaired vision to the LT side continues to make the distinction between LT/RT skills important.
It seems as though Iowa

OL's have done ok the past few years
We can get a REALLY good player as low as 8
Reale01 : 1/15/2020 2:05 am : link
Maybe even later once it all shakes out.

A good year to trade down to get a couple more picks. You never know what the offers will be and its not something we usually do. It would be great to have 4 picks in the first two rounds. We could cure a lot of ills.

We are not getting an extra 1 and 2 to trade down 4 picks or less. To get an extra 1 you are probably looking at needing to move to 15 or later.
A 2nd
NikkiMac : 1/15/2020 8:46 am : link
And a 3rd would suffice
I haven't seen enough of Wirfs
Section331 : 1/15/2020 9:10 am : link
to comment on his pass pro, but he is a monster in the run game. He's got an edge to him that I like, and I think this team could use more of. I have seen some things about him having trouble handling speed outside, but haven't seen enough to give an opinion.
I don't know, I don't see it as much
barens : 1/15/2020 10:56 am : link
as some you. I like Thomas and Wills better, think they look better on tape, plain and simple. Wirfs looks really inconsistent, one play he looks all world, and the next he whiffs, or gets pushed around. I don't see top 5.

I don't disagree, but it will be "market driven". We don't know what the offer would be.
Wirfs plays with power and an edge
JonC : 1/15/2020 2:44 pm : link
I think he can definitely play RT in the NFL, but not so sure about LT. And, it's still vital to protect the QB blindside especially when they're a fumble machine with virtually no mental clock for pressure.
Jon, iirc, Brandon Scherff was taken 5th
Big Blue '56 : 1/15/2020 2:53 pm : link
in round 1. If this guy has the goods as an ORT, would you take him at 5?

I recall people thinking Scherff could/would drop to us. We obviously never got the chance.
depending on how the combine/offseason shakes out
Platos : 1/15/2020 2:54 pm : link
we can be in great position to trade down multiple times and get some great plug and play talent.

let the combine workout warriors get picked first so we can get the un-sexy players who end up helping teams win games not draft report cards from the talking heads.

Oops, take him at 4, that is.

Still have to see how all the prospects test out and how the board stacks to get a practical feel for it.

Personally, I really like Wirfs as a RT but don't love the concept of picking a RT at #4 overall. If he's BPA, then pick him or try to trade down and obtain value via extra picks.

Right now, I'm hoping the QB needy teams trade up and Young or Okudah slips to us.
'a fumble machine with virtually no mental clock for pressure'
Torrag : 1/15/2020 4:11 pm : link
Man this place has no patience.

The numbers are what they are regarding Jones fumbling. Maybe, just maybe, we can include some context though? Piece of crap O-Line that never established a running game, gave up pressure consistently and finished as the third worst in QB hits yielded. For a rookie QB.
He is what he is, at the moment

You've said that twice now. All I'm suggesting is you felt the need to criticize more than just his ball protection but his mental clock and feel for pressure in a conversation about Wirfs and the OT's. Seems fair to include some context and contributing factors. So I supplied a few.

Wirfs
Archer : 1/15/2020 5:37 pm : link
I do not like OL who do not play with their hands on the ground
Wirfs is the only top OL who comes from a pro style offense

The transition to a three point stance is more difficult than you can imagine
