Wow. He was only 28.

Did he give any reason why?
Only 28.

This is all I can think about right now and I can’t blame him
Saos1n : 1/14/2020 8:39 pm : link
I had zero information about this, but I don't find it surprising.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 1/14/2020 8:39 pm : link
Between his injuries and the fact the entire team mailed it in when Rivera was fired, I doubt he wanted to start over with someone new.

Great LB in the pros, but the absolute best one I ever saw in college.

He’d be absolutely fucking phenomenal on TV

Could be a defensive version of Tony Romo

Hope he has the desire for it
One of Boston College’s finest.

Wish him the best. As for the Panthers, maybe not everything is coming up roses for them this offseason. Quite a loss for them.

Def confirmed. Sorry I didn’t post a link in the OP
Took quite a few head shots recently...

good for him. Get the hell out why you still have a chance to stay intact.
Such a great LB
Rjanyg : 1/14/2020 8:45 pm : link
His career, while somewhat short, was excellent.

Luke Kuechly gets emotional in the video the
@Panthers
posted when he says he can't play at the same level anymore: "I still want to play but I don't think it's the right decision."

Ahhh. Thanks. Could very well be.
Good for him.

He's had multiple concussions. It wouldn't shock me if Shepard did the same in the future.
Yeah,
Pete in MD : 1/14/2020 8:47 pm : link
he posted a video announcing it. He got emotional about wanting to play still but knowing it's not the best idea. He must be concerned about concussions and maybe other injuries.

Jints, I had the same reaction to that post. If you know anything about Kuechly, he's had like a million concussions.
Well, I didn't know, which was why I asked.
Klaatu : 1/14/2020 8:53 pm : link
You don't have to be dicks about it.
I heard a rumor..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/14/2020 8:56 pm : link
about this a couple hours ago, but there's been rumblings about him and Cam stepping away for a couple months now.

Kuechly is still one of the few professional athletes I've seen so dazed and injured that he cried.

One, tough SOB who has a bright future ahead of him
We all love the game but.....
morrison40 : 1/14/2020 8:57 pm : link
it’s a high speed collision sport that creates stresses that the human body Is not capable of sustaining on a continuous basis. Shorter careers will prevail and ultimately provide more sustainable lives for the players and preserve the sport.

Didn't mean to come across as one. I'm happy he's retiring. He's the type of guy I'd worry about in 10 years. He's suffered multiple concussions that we know of...

He's got quite the resume. I'm not sure if its Canton bound, but who knows?

He had some frightening head injuries. Great pro, amazing college player. Always dream that one day we have an LB that can cover like that.
He recently got

He’s an interesting candidate. I think he will get in, but after a few years.

If it was like basketball HOF he’s be a lock. He jumped off the screen in BC.

But only 8 years is short for a HOF in this generation (not like Sayers back when knee surgeries ended careers or really hurt them). But, 5 first team All Pro does it for me.

Haha, it is on his Wikipedia page so totally could be false. Maybe she's subtly sending him a message?

I saw Kuechly when he was a frosh in '09 vs. ND. I remember thinking, 'Damn. This kid is really good.' I believe he replaced Herzlich.

He was a helluva player. If someone like TD gets in with such a short resume, Kuechly needs serious consideration.

he has the perfect excuse for any mistake

Honey, I wouldn't have slept with that stripper if I didn't have all these concussions!!

too many injuries, Grab the money and run. Wish him well.
Not

surprising. Wish him the best. Fantastic player, and even better in college as others have said. Just too many concussions and other injuries.
Wished more players

Panthers lose Kuechly and may lose Newton
New coaching staff
It could be a long season for Carolina
As a BC grad I am obviously biased
bhill410 : 1/14/2020 9:48 pm : link
But 5 all pro selections, 1 defensive player of the year (at middle linebacker) and defensive rookie of the year. To me it’s a no brainer.

That picture of him is disturbing. Was that after a concussion? That doesn't look like a picture of pain but one of horror.

Wonder if he had trouble recalling things like "What day is it?", "How old are you?", etc... That's what that picture looks like to me.

Getting juked by that little kid

Since 2012 he’s led all LBs in tackles, interceptions, and passes defended. A guy who would be great in any era.
Too many concussions
dpinzow : 1/14/2020 11:03 pm : link
He still certainly wants to play but the docs probably said one more concussion and his life would be altered in a horrible way, so he has to do what is best so he can live well after football
The Shepard stuff w the Giants
LauderdaleMatty : 1/14/2020 11:47 pm : link
Was overboard to me. But this kid has had a lot of injuries and as mentioned more than a couple concussions.

Smart move IMO

Great player

Really loved his game. Man Carolina is being forced into a rebuild.
In addition to his physical ability, he was a very instinctive player.
Ira : 1/15/2020 4:46 am : link
I agree that his decision was probably health related and I think it's probably a good choice for him.
Good for him
Bubba : 1/15/2020 7:05 am : link
I was a little concerned he might end up in Washington with Rivera.
I’m happy for him ... if you have health, you have everything.
Spider56 : 1/15/2020 7:57 am : link
Without it, you have nothing. He’s done well in the area with many endorsements and several TV commercials ... The kitty cats are going to miss him big time ... He, Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen were the bedrock for the franchise for many years and now they’ve all moved on.
I can't
Amtoft : 1/15/2020 11:13 am : link

We may be seeing more
Bubba : 1/15/2020 12:16 pm : link
early retirements after players get to their second contracts.
The money they are making now lends to this. The concussions issues are a major concern.
lot of collisions
bc4life : 1/15/2020 5:33 pm : link
he generally is at the front of the pack re: tackles per season. so, his 8 is probably more like 10-11
just looked up his stats
bc4life : 1/15/2020 5:41 pm : link
averages about 120+ tackles per year.

On a side note - Bobby Wagner's stats are even more impressive
