Marc Bolan band. Pretty much kicked off glam rock genre. Youíve heard some of their tunes I am sure without knowing it was them.

Marc Bolan died young, in a pretty bizarre and not the usual way for a rock star. Supposedly he feared dying in a car crash so he never got his drivers license.

One night coming home from a pub (or party), his girlfriend drove into a tree and he was killed in the passenger seat.

Bang a Gong was his biggest hit, but he had some other good songs and of course he was a pretty big influence on a lot of artists.

Would it be so hard to call it the Music Hall of Fame?
figgy2989 : 1/15/2020 10:10 am : link
Is it because there is already a Country Music Hall of Fame and they need to keep "Rock & Roll".

When you are inducting the likes of Biggie and Whitney Houston, it really isn't rock and roll.

A shorter list
Bubba : 1/15/2020 10:13 am : link
would be those NOT in it.

tune in to the Eddie Trunk show later today and listen to him explode on air. It should be entertaining:).

At this point, bands like Iron Maiden and (especially) Judas Priest constantly being passed over for some of these inductees is just a joke. Like Greg said in a post earlier, they should just rename it the Popular Music Hall of Fame.

Happy to see the Doobie Brothers get in. For me, they are one of those bands whose music I basically grew up on, but havent really gone back and listened to again for years (and years). Just a ton of radio hits throughout the 70's. Another band in that same category for me is Jethro Tull. I used to really like them in my pre-teen/teen years, pretty damn popular band back then, but again, havent pulled out a Tull album/cd/whatever in a long time.

Umm so how do you explain Deep Purple (finally), Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Nirvana (to an extent), AC/DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Metallica, and Def Leppard amongst others who's style was not much different.

It is nothing but a bullshit snub like Deep Purple was by a bunch of beat writers who have no clue. Whitney fucking Houston? Ugh.
For all those that are upset about Whitney Houston
BigBlue2007 : 1/15/2020 12:33 pm : link
Whitney Houston was an R&B/Pop artist however. R&B contributed to the creation of Rock & Roll. Rock & Roll has also undergone several meanings over the years. She belongs in the Hall of Fame. 200 million records sold worldwide. Tons of number one and top 10 hits. 7 Grammy awards and countless other accolades. I am no fan of her, but if she isn't in no one can be in.

From Wikipedia...

The term "rhythm and blues" has undergone a number of shifts in meaning. In the early 1950s, it was frequently applied to blues records.[4] Starting in the mid-1950s, after this style of music contributed to the development of rock and roll, the term "R&B" became used to refer to music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music.

Kick out Jams blew me away in 1969. Yea I'm old. But back then you rarely heard such really hard hard rock like that.

First heard them on Chum from Toronto when I was in college in Buffalo.

God I am old but smile at the great times back then!

Lol - yes but it was her own singing! They did it that way due to the stadium conditions, broadcasting mix, and other challenging technical considerations. Her vocal was simply and indisputably the best rendition of The Anthem that anyone has ever done.
Yet, Todd Rungren and Carole King are not in the R&R HoF!

It was fantastic, but "indisputably the best"? Come on, it's been performed millions of times, no version is "indisputable". Besides, I'll take Marvin Gaye's (actually live) version at the NBA ASG.

The criteria for RnR HOF has been highly suspect for a long time. Considering that, Whitney belongs. She's one of the great vocal interpreters of all-time, and the Hall has been generalized towards Pop for many years.

But this assertion of yours is downright silly. Sorry, Whitney doesn't get credit for influencing RnR artists who existed decades years before her birth. Sure, she can get in, but don't justify it through this convoluted genre-based argument.

giantsfan227B : 1/15/2020 8:07 pm : link
Depeche Mode doesn't get a ton of respect because they are an electric alternative band but their musicanship is very good. Lots of hits.

Nine Inch Nails is outstanding. Love them. Trent not only kills it with them but his work on soundtracks and in music industry he deserves it.

The Doobie Brothers were a staple in the 70's on the radio.

I'm not a Whitney Houston fan but she was very talented. Great vocalist. Surprised it took this long.

Notorious BIG. I'm no rap expert and personally like a lot of other rap artists much better but even if that is the case he is still top 10 which makes him worthy. There is no doubt though he influenced a ton of musicians which many times is all it takes to get in.

T-Rex. Yeah, other than Bang a Gong can't say I know much from them or that they influenced music too much.
T-Rex
BigBluesman : 1/15/2020 8:10 pm : link
was not big on American radio but Marc's music was huge in England and a big influence on everything Glam as well as a great deal of the early Punk. Really, really influential and awesomely fun music as well.

Thatís not what I meant to imply she gets credit for for RnR artist. Iím just saying rock and roll was created by black artist. Now when black artist get selected you always hear arguments that they donít belong. I find that complete garbage. They do belong.

Depeche Mode is nearly 40 years on, when they tour are among the highest grossing bands in the world. They have sold 100M records.

Their first few records were synth pop, but from Black Celebration on are a way more rock focused band.

Songs of Faith and Devotion, Violator, Ultra are not only hugely successful but incredibly influential.

When Trent Reznor accepts, he will say Depeche Mode is the reason he started writing music.

Anyone who doesn't see their place in the history of rock music is paying no attention.

What's great about the Doobies is the second wind they got with Michael McDonald and Skunk Baxter joining in 75'. Steely Dan breaks up while touring and these 2 came over to the Doobies at a PERFECT time, Tom Johnston stepping out due to an ulcer, McDonald completely reinvented the band, turning a straightforward rock band into a unique Pop band, still true to their rock roots but now with a cool jazz flavor, McDonald becoming a driving force as their new face and Baxter absolutely SCORCHING as their new lead guitarist. (Don't Stop to Watch the Wheels)

Takin' it to the Streets is still as powerful and relevant as the day it was written, they won a Grammy for song of the year with 'What a Fool Believes' - what an odd composition that one it, with it falsetto harmonies and funky backbeat - some really amazing stuff came out of that version of the band and I always appreciated that though the Doobies went through a LOT of people over the years, there never seemed to be any negativity. Happily stoned, they rolled through the decades, a phenomenal live act with a catalog heavy with some of the greatest cuts in Rock history.

Glad to see them get in.
