NFT: Wrestling fans: Rocky Johnson passed away

Jints in Carolina : 1/15/2020 5:59 pm
75 years old. The Rock's dad.

I remember him growing up in the 70's tagging with Tony Atlas.

Oh wow, I used to be a big fan

of those two. That was right around the time I started to get into it. He was the Rock's dad?
Yes he was
JonC : 1/15/2020 6:46 pm : link
he married the Rock's mom, who was part of the Samoan WWF contingent.

RIP Rocky.
Aw man

75 years old, which is ancient for a pro wrestler
Not a big wrestling fan now

But I did watch back in the 80s before the explosion in the late 80s. Johnson and Atlas were the first tag team I really liked. I loved Johnson especially.

He didn't marry the Rock's

mother. Well he did, but before the Rock was born.

He is the Rock's natural father.

unless that's what you mean, but it's a weird way to say it.

I went to elementary and middle school with the Rock (back then Dwayne Johnson) and Rocky was still active with WWF then.

a lot of WWF stars were from or lived in the New Haven area. Which makes sense with WWF HQ not far. Tony Garea, Jimmy Superfly, the Samoans (they were on my school bus route and had a wrestling ring in their back yard), Rocky Johnson, Mr Fuji, Quick Draw Rick McGraw, and many more.

loved wrestling when I was younger.
I always thought

he should have been more of a star during the 80s wrestling boom. I guess he was sort of old by then...did he get injured?

Sunset flip and the drop kick. He was fun to watch. Am I remembering correctly a mini feud with Morocco? I vaguely recall him fighting Morocco for the Intercontinental title on the televised Saturday morning show and dominating the match only to have Morocco cheat to abruptly win.

Wiat, what?
Tony Atlas on Rocky Johnson's Death.

"I would have quit wrestling in 1975 if it wasn't for Rocky Johnson."

Talks about their friendship, their differences (mostly about Atlas using drugs). Atlas said he spoke with Johnson recently, knew he was sick, but had no idea it was so serious. Said they were supposed to appear together in Albany. Very sad.

Dwayne Johnson was a grade behind me at Hamden Middle school in Hamden, CT. He only lived in Hamden a few years, maybe 1983 - 1986 or something like that. He also went to elementary school with me, Shepherd Glen. His family lived in the same apartment complex as my father. I didn't really know him, but everyone knew him even then. He was a nice kid and of course everyone knew his dad so he was "famous" then.

The Garea's (Paul and Ivan) Tony's sons were a couple years ahead of me in the school system and I knew them much more. Paul owned a bar that during college we'd go to all the time, they even filmed some WWF stuff there.

Haha, "ho hum. I went to school with the Rock. No biggie."
