OC job-I probably will be beaten to a pulp for this but heck

Ivan15 : 1/16/2020 10:19 am
It’s a slow day.

What if you de-emphasize the OC role so that his only job was to devise the offense and game plan. Right now, the OC is spread too thin to do the important job of game planning.

The offense would be managed by an experienced senior coach who would monitor practices, follow player development, and make sure the coaches are teaching the preferred techniques for the team’s system. There would be fewer situations where a player is stuck on the bench when he should be replacing a starter like Gates was.

Probably more important for offense than defense.

Okay, let the beating begin.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but

I thought that’s what the HC does?
I'm curious - why more important for offense than for defense?

I'm not sure you should get beaten over it - a lot of teams have split their coordinators. IMO - given the lack of CBA time, teams should have much larger coaching staffs so that they can get more 1:1 time with players in an attempt to develop them more quickly. I realize coordination among coaches will be more challenging, but it seems like the best way to offset the issues that materialized after the CBA was shortened and player injuries seem to be on the rise.

More coaches = more teachers, and in education the classic metric is student to teacher ratio, why not here?
Why..

is the OC position spread thin now vs. years prior?

It is...
You know the entire coaching staff

is involved in the game planning

these guys watch film till their eyes bleed, they all do. So they sit in a room for hours upon hours and break down film of what the other team is doing and they all make suggestions on what they think will work and not work or where they think they see an advantage.

its not like the OC is doing it all himself and then unveiling a surprise on Weds at practice
I think the aversion

to more coaches is the risk of players getting mixed messages...

Let's face it, as an assistant coach, you want to establish yourself and make sure your unit or specialty is as good as it can be. How much does your style as an assistant differ from the HC? Now the suggestion is more coaches?....I dunno
I’ll just let the others

Speak for me on this.
Think Coach Judge would be open to that type of plan

it seems to fit his view of how a team should be developed. Now lets see who he gets to fill these teacher coach roles.
LOL

There it is.

I think the OC has been spread thin in prior years too but maybe not on the Giants where the HC has been doing the play calling. I think we all agree that the setup was wrong under McAdoo and Shurmur. This would change the focus so the OC was overseeing game planning but not leader of the offense.

This is more about the OC focusing on one important job, and leaving the jobs of leadership, teaching and coaching up players to others.
What makes you think...
Brown_Hornet : 1/16/2020 12:27 pm : link
... That the OC is doing all of those jobs?

There aren't any teams without position coaches. On top of that many teams now have specialized coordinators like passing game coordinator or run game coordinator.

what if you de-emphasize

yourself!

I think thats kind of how a coaching staff already works
