someone who has worked in law enforcement for almost 20 years, I have never and will never let anyone touch me in that manner. You push me, you get cuffed. You slap my ass (happened in 2008), I cuff you. Let the judge figure it all out but I am not going to stand there and get disrespected. The lack of consequences to those that do these things coupled with the lack of action by today's Law Enforcement is what birth's things like water dousing of Police Officers in NYC etc.

Tommy, your proposed reaction makes some sense. Set the limit right there on appropriate behavior around and directed at law enforcement personnel.

My gripe with this is that WASNT DONE ON THE SPOT. Issuing a warrant for whatever after the fact is a fucking joke and a waste of public funds.

Not to mention, it's not a good "look" for any of the parties involved.

You are 100% correct, either arrest him on the spot or let it be. Issuing a warrant is some higher up's idea (someone who has not walked the streets for probably 30+ years) after looking at the video.

It would be more interesting to go back in the archives and read a thread on Beckham in 2017. If he'd done this then everyone would be saying the cop overreacted.

I think you'd have a similar core of people from back then. I loved what Beckham did for this team, but I can tell you I wouldn't have defended this...no matter the color of the uniform he wore.
That people can try to defend OBJ here and call the cop into question

The guards at Aushwitz were just doing their jobs too. Doesn't make it anymore reasonable. You know how miserable life would be if you got a ticket everytime you jaywalked you got a ticket. Going two miles over speed limit ticket. Its called discretion, and a job like police officer requires a ton of it. If not find another line of work.

issuing a warrant for OBJs arrest for dancing with a cop and slapping his butt is a waste of the louisiana taxpayers dollars, yes. in my opinion. there's crime and then there's crime.

i realize there's an enthusiastic culture of police worship in the broader society that manifests here on BBI, but yea- this seems like trivial bullshit to me.

the police should focus on more important things, like protecting and serving the communities in which they work. no louisiana citizen is being protected or served here.

The point is, if this wasn't OBJ would it have even happened? If the LSU player isn't arrested, then the answer is no.

Theres a pretty significant difference between police worship and acknowledging that putting your hands on anyone, let alone a cop, is a dumb fucking idea that invites trouble.

The incident is all over social media and can have people thinking its OK to smack a cop on the ass. Unfortunately, its an offense to strike an officer and therefore, they are going to make it a point that it is a crime.

Ive been to NOLA before and they don't take much sh*t down there. Have seen the mounties pin multiple to buildings b/c they've been talking smack as they roll through to clear the street.

Last I knew, you could be charged with a crime for putting your hands on/assaulting a police officer? If this is let go, where is the line drawn? Where is the distinction made? As others have said, this clown has millions of followers and kids worshiping him and his every move, you really want millions of kids growing up thinking it's OK to put their hands on a cop and not thinking there will be any repercussions? I certainly don't.
Totally wrong
10thAve : 1/16/2020 1:49 pm : link
I was totally wrong on Beckham. I wasn’t much of a vocal supporter here of him as I don’t post very often, but I was a big fan of his while with the Giants.

But I’m glad he’s not on a team I root for any longer. He’s your typical jackass and knucklehead that everyone here grew up with and you shake your head at all the dumb shit he does. It’s common sense, you don’t touch police officers, no matter how innocuous your think it is. Then the taunting dancing afterwards? its unreal. He’s soon to become a cautionary tale.
I actually kinda feel bad for the cop in the video
eclipz928 : 1/16/2020 1:49 pm : link
He gets put on an impossible assignment (trying to corral a bunch of college football players as they celebrate the biggest moment of their lives), gets embarrassed by being shown on a viral video getting his ass smacked as he's in the middle of trying to "lay down the law", then is made to look like a whiny little bitch because his boss has decided after the fact that he should file charges for simple assault.

You’re right. If John Doe does this he probably will get more punishment than say Odell. Odell will probably get off w not much of a penalty since he’s rich and can afford a big time lawyer. If you think that a cop in my town is bending over to pick up something and I slap his ass and then do a dance in his face and I won’t get arrested then I don’t know what to say. And no it wouldn’t be news. I’m not a celebrity. You really think the cop would go easier on me than a celebrity in that situation? Yea umm no.

TyreeHelmet : 1/16/2020 1:51 pm : link

The officer in question was employed by the Superdome; he wasn't New Orleans police.

Most people would call that a security guard, not a cop.

Probably why OBJ wasn't arrested on the spot. New Orleans police have now issued the arrest warrant based on video evidence of the slap on the Superdome officer.

I think the charge is fair. Keep your hands to yourself.

Odell is immature, he's immature with money, but really, they've just won the championship or whatever you call it, let them celebrate, let them get drunk. Totally avoidable situation, unless you feel that these dudes threaten the fabric of American values, which I seriously doubt is the case.

Knineteen : 1/16/2020 1:57 pm : link
People do know what "assault" means from a legal standpoint, right? That was clearly assault.

Should the cop complain? Well, that's really up to him.

However, I do hope the cop is paraded across the national media the same way this reporter was...
