Go back and read Eric's review of the 2004 Draft

Gordo : 1/16/2020 2:35 pm
Now that Eli's days in blue are all but over. It was interesting to go back and read Eric's take on the draft.

My favorite part was Eric saying if Eli wasn't a perennial pro bowl player then we overpaid.

Does anybody think we overpaid? How many Super Bowls have the Chargers/Rivers won since the trade?

It's interesting to see how everything turned out and compare it to what everyone was saying back then.

I don’t see rivers or Ben

Running gilbrides offense as well as Eli did. That offense, which couldn’t be stopped when on, and the defense brought us two Super Bowl victories against two great teams.
Well I will say this

and Eric whiffed on these:

WR Jamaar Taylor, LT Drew Strojny, and DE Isaac Hilton -- they sucked. They were horrible picks
I had an Eagle fan today

telling me that whoever the Jets get with that 3rd pick we gave up for Leonard Willams is going to haunt us for years to come.

my answer to that was "Everyone had a hissy fit with every Charger draft pick we gave up in the Eli Rivers swap and that turned out ok. So i really dont care"

Jamaar Taylor wasn't bad - he just got hurt and vanished afterward.

The other two are 7th rounders. Eric's call on Hilton was particularly interesting since he caveated with 'if he keeps his head on straight' - isn't he the one that ended up doing jail time for assaulting his child?
The giants gave up a lot for Eli
Scyber : 1/16/2020 2:48 pm : link
But the 2005 draft picks they gave up were mitigated by the fact that they hit on 75% of their picks in 05. With only 4 picks, they wound up with multiple year starters in Justin Tuck, Corey Webster, and Brandon Jacobs.

That was Jeremiah Parker.
Eric nailed it in this paragraph -

But what really makes him a likely impact player in the league is his head. He is a very smart and field-savvy player, like his brother Peyton. Eli is patient and does not fluster. Mistakes don’t bother him. Eli reads defenses very well before the snap of the ball and does an excellent job of quickly finding the open receiver. His field vision is outstanding. He makes good decisions. Mature for age and very intense. Eli truly lives and breathes football. And he is a very hard worker. This is what makes him so good.

Damnit that's right - although Hilton proved to be no choir boy (though nowhere near as bad as child abuse).

Jamaar Taylor was not a horrible pick. He flashed but his career was over due to a botched knee surgery.
I remember one game during Jamaar Taylor's rookie season
Jay on the Island : 1/16/2020 3:04 pm : link
where he had two 50 yard receptions in the same game versus the Eagles.

Maybe, but from the Jets POV, that player cost them the #6 pick in the entire draft.

Taylor had talent, but got hurt (or was drafted hurt, which I guess does prove your point).

But he's not a total whiff like Strojny

I thought he was the next big thing after that game.

Looks like that might have been the game where he racked up his career stats

I remember that. I thought he was going to be a stud for the Giants going forward, then, injuries screwed him.
As I remember that there were three BBI 'factions' in that Draft...
Torrag : 1/16/2020 3:43 pm : link
One group was high on Sean Taylor and maybe he'd still be alive today if we drafted him, think about that one. Damn. Another was saying just draft Roethlisberger and keep the picks(I was in that group), and although Ben has two rings I'm glad we passed because he's a rapist piece of shit. The third were eyeballing Manning and wondering what it would take, though no one was expecting him to be as good as Peyton.

You're forgetting the Robert Gallery faction, which may have been the largest.
Sean Taylor

Is incredibly overrated. Sad story but in no way would he have been a better pick than Eli, even if he were still playing.

Yeah I remember the Gallery faction, it included the media. He was considered by most to be a risk free stud. He was going to come into the NFL and dominate. A friend of mine who has been employed by the Patriots in various ways since 2006 or so I think, was the only person who said to me he isn’t going to live up to anywhere near the hype. He thought Fitzgerald was the best player in the draft. As I recall, he couldn’t really decide between Ben and Eli, but he was aware that Ben was a really big partier in college. He’s in that business but was very new at that time and he will even admit that it’s the closest he’s ever been to nailing things, even all these years later.
As the 03 season was winding down
Sneakers O'toole : 1/16/2020 5:04 pm : link
I was in the Gallery faction. A friend of mine who's opinions on QBs I trusted started getting in my head about Manning's brother at Ile Miss and convinced me as the draft approached. He had some sort of connection to Ole Miss and was convinced Eli would end up the superior Manning.
I wanted to trade down

I was definately in that group, I loved Kerry Collins and felt Gallery would have given him a more few great years as a pocket passer.

Yep, it was a while ago and Gallery was a bust at OT but had a good career at OG as it turned out.

A lot of people felt that way. I even struggled with that option.
Collins went to Oakland with Gallery,
an_idol_mind : 1/16/2020 5:40 pm : link
then Randy Moss joined him. I thought he was going to tear up the league.

I did too. Collins had that big arm downfield, I thought him and Moss were going to do damage.
I was ok w Ben. But talk about

Dodging a bullet. In NY he would have been a disaster making Lerry colons early off field career screw seem preschool level.
