Garrett comes in towards the end of the game in relief efforts....Did his presence as a backup QB during his tenure help the play of Kerri Collins while he was with the Giants? Sean Payton was our OC as well...
I remember hearing rumblings all they way back then....

that Garrett was coach material. So I'm going to say it didn't hurt having him in the room.
In 2000

Garrett was recognized as one of the best backup QBs in the NFL because of his time at Dallas where he was a perfect fill in for a few games. The Cowboys had stripped down their team by that point, so Garrett was a free agent and the Giants wanted a veteran backup for Collins in case of an injury. Keep in mind, Collins was only 28 years old in 2000 with the Giants. So he was in his prime and there was no need for a "developmental" QB. With Accorsi as GM, he loved Collins so he was entrenched for the next few years. In the years before that, they had guys like Mike Cherry as a backup when they were sorting out with the Dave Brown, Kent Graham, and Danny Kanell mess.

So the bottom line, I'm sure Garrett helped in the QB room a bit for Collins, but his primary role was to win a game or two if forced into action. That was it.

I would say yes, and I'm not a Fassel fan....
No Where Man : 1/17/2020 1:49 pm : link
but Coach Fassel did the heavy lifting in helping Collins.
That was Madden and Summerall's last game togehter

and I believe one of them made the comment about Garrett becoming a coach in the future.

But wasn't that the game where Collins was given 'just the one actual read'.

Allowing him to set and throw as coach had figured out a game plan well.

?

Isn't that a side benefit of play action off of a well functioning run game, in that it's typically only one or maybe at most two true planned targets, ergo simpler from a read the D perspective?

One can always chuck it to the sideline
That game might be my top game

In terms of purely how much fun I had watching it. That was a great day.
Also the last game of the late OT Korey Stringer....

Peyton said after reviewing film he would be pissed if they didn’t drop 50 on their defense.

Yes, that was also the game that Toomer was hurt and during the week Sean Payton said to him "these are the worst defensive backs i've ever seen" So Toomer played with the injury.
I always thought the rumor was Garrett at backup QB
jcn56 : 1/17/2020 3:10 pm : link
was a favor to his old man, who had coached or worked for the Giants for awhile and was still close to the team.

I assume it's common knowledge here, but maybe not, that Garrett's dad was a college and NFL coach for many years, including at Columbia while Jason was at Columbia. After his dad called the Columbia players "drug-addicted losers" (which may have been semi-accurate at the time :-)), he was fired and Jason transferred to Princeton. I saw him play when he was at Princeton and for the Ivy League he was an incredible QB. Here's some info about his dad:

Garrett began coaching at the United States Coast Guard Academy and Lehigh University and found success as head coach at Susquehanna University (1960–1965), leading them to a 39–11–1 record which included undefeated seasons in 1961 and 1962. He was fired during the seventh game of the 1965 season for assaulting a player.[2] He spent most of the next 40 years in the National Football League as an assistant coach with the New York Giants (1970–1973), the New Orleans Saints (1976–1977), and the Cleveland Browns (1978–1984), as well as head coach of the Houston Texans of the fledgling World Football League (1974). There was a brief stint in the mid-1970s as head coach at Millburn High School in New Jersey. His last coaching job as head coach of Columbia University in 1985 was fraught with controversy as the team went 0–10 and accusations of verbal and physical abuse surfaced.[3] After the season, his sons John, Jason and Judd, who were enrolled at Columbia, transferred to Princeton University.[4]

#1 in terms of fun; the Superbowl wins were better of course, but all were stressful at some point during the game

Burt up ending Montana and LT running down the field for a TD! Guys..... It feels like forever since the Giants were consitently dominate. Hopefully this new era can provide some of those old feelings!

Yeah, that game was a runaway freight train. I couldn't help but feel tremendously grateful that the Giants weren't on the wrong end of that emblematic "wheels fallen off" thrashing.

Oddly enough, the Texans/Chiefs game kind of reminded me of it... until the Chiefs scored 41 unanswered.
Dont Forget LT, Harry Carson, Phil McConkey on the sideline during

that game... Harry Helping with the Gatorade shower! Jason Sehorn completley shutting down Randy Moss! Chris Carter blanked as well!

All I know is that the tailgating went a little long, and the escalator lines were all backed up. By the time we poked our heads out Ike was just crossing the goal line for 14-zip. Most fun I ever had at any sporting event...

Shame Collins collapsed like a house of cards vs the Ravens.
If you were watching a Cowboys game on CBS in the 1990s

and Garrett showed up on screen in any capacity, it was a lock that you'd hear Madden or Summerall talk him up about how he was going to be an NFL coach one day.
about Jim Garrett
bluepepper : 1/17/2020 8:14 pm : link
he was neighbors with Alex Webster or at least my dad thought he was because I remember my dad railing at Webster for hiring his neighbor as defensive coordinator. I was a little kid at the time and took it literally. I imagined Garrett was just a buddy of Webster's who had maybe coached Pop Warner or something and little else. LOL, the Giants were a mess in those days but not that big a mess. Garrett had a long coaching career albeit very checkered as Del's post suggests.
That was one of the most Fun Giant games I ever remember.

IIRC Collins got flopped on by fat Tony and played the second half with a dislocated shoulder. If you ever had one you would know how painful it can be.
