Its crazy how quickly NFL teams decide on coaches

ron mexico : 1/17/2020 3:58 pm
This isn't really specific to the Giants, but one of the podcast guys noted that he had about 2.5 hours of interviews and then a follow up meeting/call with Tisch the following day before getting into contract negotiations. Rhule and Mccarthy were hired under similar circumstances.

You have to interview for weeks and meet everyone including the janitor to get a job in the real world. I guess the small world the NFL is, all these guys come in pre vetted but it still blows my mind how little goes into the process for hiring coaches.

Thats my synapse fire for the day.

Kind of think you're on to something here

No psychological assessments, no problem solving tests, no extensive interviews on strategy and leadership. Just two and a half hours of talking some football cliches. It's actually quite astounding for a billion dollar business.
I was thinking about this too ...

Reminds me of the old (ethnic) army joke ... it’s Wednesday, time to change your shorts ... Matt, you change with Ron ... Ron, you change with Bill ... Mike, you change with Jason ... Kevin, you change with a Freddie... Wait, that one really doesn’t matter.
Teams are also

completely aware of who else and when their interviewees are interviewing and competing with each other to fill these positions to not lose them to a competitor. I’m sure they also had a dossier on the people before-hand and direct conversations/recommendations. We know they spoke directly with Belichek, maybe Saban as well.

It’s weird but a completely different beast.
Probably why....

so many are busts. It's a total crapshoot...not many people can handle being top dawgs.
So true. Imagine an interview for a day and you got a 5 year

30 mil contract. Crazy.Or worse 7 year 60 mil guaranteed and the owner is all exited like he just won the Super Bowl. Then the get to walk around for a year like they got all the answers. And even if then gets fired management tells everyone what a great guy and coach he is.

I agree totally. Many of these hires are like panic hires for starter’s pay. Like my first professional job where I was hired in the first 10 minutes of the interview and stayed for 40 years. The job started as soon as I could resign from my old job working at PanAm JFK.
NFL is like the real world

ok...
I was thinking this as well

I am close to getting a new job and have gone through about 10 interviews over 5 weeks and had to do a big project.

It’s not comparable but it is crazy how quick the process seems. I would say they know what they are doing but the failure rate of coaches is so high that they may want to look at their processes.

Would be interesting if they did a job posting.
Totally different situations that really aren't comparable

In the real world in most cases they know little to nothing about an applicant. In pro sports they usually already know a lot about those they ask to interview.

I think football is a small pool

People know going in who the best people are. It's not like interviewing in a big industry where there are lots of unknown people. In the NFL it's like 1 degree of separation.
Looks like I"m in the minority

but I think Darren nailed it. The NFL or I should say football is very incestuous - everyone knows each other.

The Judge interview to probably 99% of fans/press was completely out of the blue but it sounds like he was widely respected in coaching circles and he was referred by others.

I've made a habit of working for people that I know. The corporate world interview that I had to go through was basically a formality. If I can't fill positions under me for people that I know, I sure as hell look at LinkedIn and identify who is linked with potential applicants and I make some calls.

I don't think the NFL is much different.
