You don't become head coach of the Cowboys

by being a crappy OC. Good hire. I hope this demotion allows him to reinvent himself as an OC.

Also, will help in the 2 games vs Dallas next year since he really knows their personnel.
Great

hire. Welcome back coach Garrett. The hire says a lot about Judge's ability to attract high quality talent for his staff.

You guys are going to hear a lot of people, especially Cowboys fans, trash this. Garrett did in fact underachieve with the Cowboys...but that was as HC.

But I want you to think of how well STATISTICALLY Romo did. How well Dak did. How well Zeke did. How well Witten did. Think about that O-Line.

All of that is what Garrett helped develop. Why the Cowboys weren't particularly successful is irrelevant when it comes to this hiring. Some of it had to do with Garrett's clock management, but guess what, that's going to be Judge's job now. Garrett is going to focus SOLELY on the offense.

Great hire. I'm excited.

One benefit in bringing in a ST coach as HC
AcesUp : 1/17/2020 9:10 pm : link
is that he has an advantage in attracting OC and DC coaches because there is no presumed head chef behind them. I would have preferred Gruden or Turner here but like this hire. He was a forward thinking guy as an OC, Iím hoping he rediscovers that curiosity and ambition. No Linnehan in any capacity though, bring in Callahan as an OL coach and run game coordinator and this is a home run.
I feel better about this hire then i do about shula thats for
Giantfan21 : 1/17/2020 9:11 pm : link
damn sure . Who knows how it will work out but shula was a DOA.

What i dont understand is what im seeing on twitter. A lot of fans trashing this hire but in the same token praising shurmur as a great hire for the broncos for their OC . What am i missing here ? At least garrett had some success as head coach whereas shurmur was an abject failure and the worst coach i have ever seen. Why was the shurmur hire praised while this is ridiculed ?

Yeah as long as gettleman thinks halapio is good this team is screwed. someone better step up and talk some sense into him
How did Garrett underachieve in Dallas?
djm : 1/17/2020 9:28 pm : link
Says who? They had a mediocre season this year and fell under expectations but basically every other year other than this one dallas either met or exceeded expectations. And simply put, Dallas was worse off prior to Garrett taking over and he left Dallas in much much better shape. He turned Prescott into a household name. He never had a losing record. He came terrifyingly (from nyg fan pov) close to getting Dallas the nfc title game on more than one occasion. He won playoff games. Has Dallas been better in any other decade besides the 70s and 90s? Nope.

Dallas is a talented roster but doesnít Garrett get some of the credit? And is it remotely possible that the Dallas Cowboys roster is just a tad overrated? You know, this is Dallas weíre talking about. They are always hyped up to some extent. The D really was the bigger disappointment in Dallas. Garretís offense was terrific.

Might have been time to move on but Dallas was pretty well coached the last 9-10 years, as a whole.

To get a really good former OC with 10 f*cking years as HC (with a winning record) in our division who helped an UFA QB and 4th rd QB be pro bowlers, who had the #2 ranked offense as an OC with a RB named Marion... is NOT a BAD THING.

wow. I would hate to be so negative.

Judge doesn't seem like the type that will have a problem with anyone questioning who's in charge and Garrett doesn't seem like the kind that's going to be trying to undermine Judge.

Plenty of former HCs with what appears to be much less character (Schwartz?) than Garrett, have managed to go back to coordinating without causing problems for their HC.

Yeah, we all get that. The combination of his really good history as an OC and his experience as HC for Judge to lean on when necessary, makes this an excellent hire.

We just see things differently. I'm generally a positive person, but I see this hire very positively.

What an absolutely ridiculous take. Let me guess, if it wasn't garrett and it was o'shea, shula or whoever..,your take would be we have a head coach with no head coaching experience and no coaches with head coaching experience on the staff to help Judge.

Jason Garrett is not a big personality like a rex Ryan, Gregg Williams or even a Jim schwartz that could potentially create separation among players. Joe Judge comes across as a very commanding presence and someone who will be a leader

SB Nation article from April '18:

Quote:
Phillip Tanner [the former running back] was asked if Romo was a Garrett guy and this is what he had to say:

ďContrary to everyoneís belief, #9 was not a Garrett guy.Ē

Tanner gave some examples of why he felt that Romo did not fall into that group.

ďCommunication. Sideline communication, body language, media, post-game interviews - whether itís post-game interviews from Garrett or post-game interviews from Romo. You can look at Romo and Garrettís body language throughout the entire time they were there and you could see that Ro was not a Garrett guy. From times at practice you would see it, in meetings you would see it. They didnít have a bad relationship. I donít want people saying Ďoh, PT said Romo and Garrett didnít get along.í Thatís not what Iím saying. All Iím saying is Romo was not a Garrett guy."

Tanner was asked if this had anything to do with how often Romo changed the plays?

ďA lot. It has a lot to do with that. The confidence level and the trust factor between those two.Ē

The overall impression I get from Cowboys' fans comments on Garrett is that he likes things his way. How this plays into his relationships with both Jones and Judge here, we'll see.

I don't see any reason to think Garrett has the type of confrontational personality to do that. And even if he did, I also don't see any reason to think he'd even be able to take on Judge who does not appear to be some meek pushover.

Not overly excited. Garrett spent 13 years with Dallas. Average coordinator. He was a yes man in Dallas. He may flourish with Giants. He biggest asset is experience. Not a risk taker. His offense modeled after Cowboy teams of the 90ís. Likes running the ball. Not very innovative.

One 13-3. One 12-4. 4 Allie Shermanís, but only 1 losing season. Since his Dadís days with the Giants turning loose Jack Gregory in the Rover, the family has had a presence with the Giants as well as Cowboys . He has had decent success against the Eagles . He is a great hire .

When the previous regime change occurred , beginning with the stooge conference that saw Gettleman as its work product , through the formation of an utterly uninspiring coaching staff ( Men in Grey Flannel Suits), I was drained of any enthusiasm following this team . I watched the games . I followed the news . But I couldnít care less . Now I feel better .

This particular point I don't think is really accurate.

JG went along with the things he had to go along with to keep his Dallas job as long as he did, you can say that.

But he was not "yes, sir, you're right, sir, whatever you say, sir" about it.

From both fan board comments and Ed Werder reports, Garrett let Jerrah know that he thought it was a mistake to take the play calling away from him. Garrett particularly resented not being able to call plays in his last year, when he was coaching for his job, and was expressing that resentment up to the end.

The positive spin would be that JG believes in himself. How constructively that is going to work out when he takes the step down from HC back to coordinator is to be determined.
I wonder if the Giants wish..
