Former #Cowboys HC Jason Garrett has agreed to become the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants and first-year head coach Joe Judge, per source:
Its good. He was a good offensive coordinator. Thats why he ended up getting the HC job. He's motivated and has something to prove, that's a good thing for us.
besides a good offensive mind, it's a good sign that Judge is able to land quality assistants. In hindsight one of the red flags on McAdoo was when he couldn't get Philbin or anyone else noteworthy to be his OC and settle on Sullivan.

When Jason Garrett left the #Giants building, it appeared Garrett and Joe Judge were on the same page about working together. Garrett wanted to check with his family. A few days later, the Garrett family is in, the #Giants have a new OC and an old friend is back in the NFC East.
We got a guy who went 85-67 as a Head Coach to be our offensive coordinator.
If Romo didn't get hurt in 2015 he's probably closer to 92-60 career record. They started off 3 and 1 that season and then Romo got hurt. They won 12 games in 2014 and 13 games in 2016. So I'm guessing they would have won around that many with a healthy Romo.
It's nice to have that kind of experience on the coaching staff and he should help Jones quite a bit between his coaching experience plus his time in the league as a player.
I wonder if the Linehan interview still happens or if that Â
was a fall back option in case Garrett decided he didn't want it. Maybe Garrett figured he better give them an answer before he lost the job. Or maybe they are interested in Linehan for Passing Game Coordinator. He worked in that capacity for Garrett before. Ironically both he and Garrett worked on Sabans staff at one time.
Garrett values the run and if he brings Callahan and/or Kinehsn we instantly have one of the best coaching units on O in the entire league that instantly gives us an inside advantage over Dallas in scheme.
Garrett has 4 winning seasons, 1 season at 500 and 1 losing season. If Romo doesn't get hurt he most likely has 1 season at 500 and 5 seasons with a winning record. Even if the Cowboys won 10 games the year Romo got hurt than Garrett would have a 62-34 record.
but I don't particularly care for Garrett as an OC. His offenses were always really bland IMO and were heavily dependent on the talent level in Dallas, especially along the offensive line.
On the positive side, I can't remotely argue with the success Tony Romo and Dak had under Garrett. This bodes well for Daniel Jones. In addition, I think the style of play lends itself to the idea of complimentary football and taking pressure off of the defense simply by possessing it more.
Garrett has something to prove and definitely wants to be a head coach again. No better way than succeeding with the Giants.
(I talked myself into it by the end of my own comment.)
But none of that matters anymore. He’s here to be our OC.
I’m excited about his experience.
His being a part of building a foundational OL.
He seems like a first class guy well equipped to handle the transition to coordinator, even though I have a feeling Judge will lean on him a lot in year one.
Hopefully Callahan next.
Great hire.
I have some concerns mainly about how he will utilize Saquon Â
I read Wednesday talked about how Garrett holds the Giants in high esteem and it pissed off the Cowboys front office, always addressing the Giants as the New York Football Giants.
And I really like that he was willing to take a job with Daniel Jones as his QB. This is Garrett’s shot at redemption and he is signing on with a rookie QB he just coached against in the division. Not something he would do if he was worried about the kid’s prospects.
especially if Callahan comes along. It was a long time ago for both but since they both got their first real jobs under Saban, hopefully there's some alignment in how they operate (Judge/Garrett).
It appears to me that Judge went through a legitimate process and the OC slot clearly made sense for a guy with HC experience. I'd have preferred Gruden and viewed him as a more likely fit with Callahan and more creative, but Garrett isn't all that different. Both won in the the NFCE a decent amount, both with difficult org structures.
This has the chance to be an outstanding coaching staff. Judge is obviously going to allow Garrett and Graham run the show on offense and defense. Judge can focus on leading and building up this program into his image.
2 - He knows how to utilize a TE in the passing game.
3 - If he can have success with Dak Prescott, then he can have success with Daniel Jones.
4 - He helped put together one of the best OL's in recent memory OR was at least in the room when the Cowboys drafted a all-pro Offensive Tackle, a all-pro Center and a all pro Guard. He can help us identify the guys we should target to play on our OL. He knows what kind of traits they should have and what they should look like.
5 - He knows every fucking thing there is to know currently on our biggest rivals.
I could keep going because there is so many reasons why this is a good hire but I'll stop right here.....
Says as much, or more, about coach Judge as it does about Garrett. This is another positive as far as I’m concerned. This team will be measured by wins and losses, as every team is, but I have nothing but positive thoughts about this hire.
Welcome home Jason Garrett, we’re thrilled to have you here with the Nee York Football Giants. Go Big Blue!
I've wanted to see what Garrett might do without Jerry Jones looking over his shoulder. I just didn't think that would happen with the Giants.
Outside of the game itself, I think Garrett might be able to give Judge advice in dealing with the media. He's been on the hot seat in a major market, whereas Judge comes from an area where fans are convinced his team can do no wrong.
Hes developed alot of talent on dallas. Coached up undrafted Romo and 4th rd pick Dak, Cooper was a night and day difference on Dallas vs Raiders, Gallup has emerged, the Oline. Etc.
And a bonus is he comes with a bunch of inside info about Dallas. It wouldn't be surprising if Dallas stalled his firing so that the Giants could fill their coaching vacancies with other ppl to avoid that inside info reaching here.
This is an outstanding hire by Joe Judge. Garrett had the ability to beat the Philadelphia Eagles nearly every time they faced each other, something the Giants haven't been able to do on a regular basis in a decade.
I'm pretty sure through the advice from JG the Giants may finally be able to beat the over-rated Eagles.
JG will probably also love facing his former team and beat Jerry's team!
Really wanted to see this happen.
Can’t wait to see him shoving our guys on the sidelines after big plays. Used to drive me nuts. Now I’m all about it. Welcome home JG!
You guys are going to hear a lot of people, especially Cowboys fans, trash this. Garrett did in fact underachieve with the Cowboys...but that was as HC.
But I want you to think of how well STATISTICALLY Romo did. How well Dak did. How well Zeke did. How well Witten did. Think about that O-Line.
All of that is what Garrett helped develop. Why the Cowboys weren't particularly successful is irrelevant when it comes to this hiring. Some of it had to do with Garrett's clock management, but guess what, that's going to be Judge's job now. Garrett is going to focus SOLELY on the offense.
is that he has an advantage in attracting OC and DC coaches because there is no presumed head chef behind them. I would have preferred Gruden or Turner here but like this hire. He was a forward thinking guy as an OC, I’m hoping he rediscovers that curiosity and ambition. No Linnehan in any capacity though, bring in Callahan as an OL coach and run game coordinator and this is a home run.
I feel better about this hire then i do about shula thats for Â
damn sure . Who knows how it will work out but shula was a DOA.
What i dont understand is what im seeing on twitter. A lot of fans trashing this hire but in the same token praising shurmur as a great hire for the broncos for their OC . What am i missing here ? At least garrett had some success as head coach whereas shurmur was an abject failure and the worst coach i have ever seen. Why was the shurmur hire praised while this is ridiculed ?

RE: If Garrett is able to use Saquon the way he used Ezekiel Â
Says who? They had a mediocre season this year and fell under expectations but basically every other year other than this one dallas either met or exceeded expectations. And simply put, Dallas was worse off prior to Garrett taking over and he left Dallas in much much better shape. He turned Prescott into a household name. He never had a losing record. He came terrifyingly (from nyg fan pov) close to getting Dallas the nfc title game on more than one occasion. He won playoff games. Has Dallas been better in any other decade besides the 70s and 90s? Nope.
Dallas is a talented roster but doesn’t Garrett get some of the credit? And is it remotely possible that the Dallas Cowboys roster is just a tad overrated? You know, this is Dallas we’re talking about. They are always hyped up to some extent. The D really was the bigger disappointment in Dallas. Garret’s offense was terrific.
Might have been time to move on but Dallas was pretty well coached the last 9-10 years, as a whole.

Great hire. I'm excited.
I dont think Garrett had anything to do with how elusive Romo was, how strong Zeke is or how well Witten ran routes
Garrett is going to also be the training wheels for Judge.
Not a bad thing, but something to keep in mind...
Damn, even when you say something positive, you say it in a negative way.
"training wheels".. "Not a bad thing"?
To get a really good former OC with 10 f*cking years as HC (with a winning record) in our division who helped an UFA QB and 4th rd QB be pro bowlers, who had the #2 ranked offense as an OC with a RB named Marion... is NOT a BAD THING.
This all looks great in January. Let’s see who looks to Judge and who looks to Garrett when the going gets tough in October. If I am Judge, I’’m not feeling too comfortable with a former HC of the year looking over my shoulder.

It's crystal clear that the Giants have made a longterm investment in Judge. He has NOTHING to worry about.

Based strictly off their media personas, I don’t see Garrett cucking Judge here. Armchairing the personalities, it’s actually a fit.

No, this is a very good thing.
The point is Garrett has nearly a decade of HC experience and should be able to help - "training wheels" - Judge on this maiden voyage as a HC.

wow. I would hate to be so negative.
Judge doesn't seem like the type that will have a problem with anyone questioning who's in charge and Garrett doesn't seem like the kind that's going to be trying to undermine Judge.
Plenty of former HCs with what appears to be much less character (Schwartz?) than Garrett, have managed to go back to coordinating without causing problems for their HC.

Yeah, we all get that. The combination of his really good history as an OC and his experience as HC for Judge to lean on when necessary, makes this an excellent hire.
We just see things differently. I'm generally a positive person, but I see this hire very positively.

What an absolutely ridiculous take. Let me guess, if it wasn't garrett and it was o'shea, shula or whoever..,your take would be we have a head coach with no head coaching experience and no coaches with head coaching experience on the staff to help Judge.
Jason Garrett is not a big personality like a rex Ryan, Gregg Williams or even a Jim schwartz that could potentially create separation among players. Joe Judge comes across as a very commanding presence and someone who will be a leader

Not to mention Garrett comes from same Nick Saban line as Joe Judge so it isn’t as tangential as Shula having a connection to Shurmur via Ron Rivera being Andy Reid’s LB Coach

Might have been time to move on but Dallas was pretty well coached the last 9-10 years, as a whole.
So, would be ecstatic and very pleased if the Giants under Judge’s leadership for the next 10 years only won two first round playoff games? Is that all you need to make you happy and feel content?
You guys are going to hear a lot of people, especially Cowboys fans, trash this. Garrett did in fact underachieve with the Cowboys...but that was as HC.

Phillip Tanner [the former running back] was asked if Romo was a Garrett guy and this is what he had to say:
“Contrary to everyone’s belief, #9 was not a Garrett guy.”
Tanner gave some examples of why he felt that Romo did not fall into that group.
“Communication. Sideline communication, body language, media, post-game interviews - whether it’s post-game interviews from Garrett or post-game interviews from Romo. You can look at Romo and Garrett’s body language throughout the entire time they were there and you could see that Ro was not a Garrett guy. From times at practice you would see it, in meetings you would see it. They didn’t have a bad relationship. I don’t want people saying ‘oh, PT said Romo and Garrett didn’t get along.’ That’s not what I’m saying. All I’m saying is Romo was not a Garrett guy."
Tanner was asked if this had anything to do with how often Romo changed the plays?
“A lot. It has a lot to do with that. The confidence level and the trust factor between those two.”
The overall impression I get from Cowboys' fans comments on Garrett is that he likes things his way. How this plays into his relationships with both Jones and Judge here, we'll see.

I don't see any reason to think Garrett has the type of confrontational personality to do that. And even if he did, I also don't see any reason to think he'd even be able to take on Judge who does not appear to be some meek pushover.
Not overly excited. Garrett spent 13 years with Dallas. Average coordinator. He was a yes man in Dallas. He may flourish with Giants. He biggest asset is experience. Not a risk taker. His offense modeled after Cowboy teams of the 90’s. Likes running the ball. Not very innovative.
One 13-3. One 12-4. 4 Allie Sherman’s, but only 1 losing season. Since his Dad’s days with the Giants turning loose Jack Gregory in the Rover, the family has had a presence with the Giants as well as Cowboys . He has had decent success against the Eagles . He is a great hire .
When the previous regime change occurred , beginning with the stooge conference that saw Gettleman as its work product , through the formation of an utterly uninspiring coaching staff ( Men in Grey Flannel Suits), I was drained of any enthusiasm following this team . I watched the games . I followed the news . But I couldn’t care less . Now I feel better .
This particular point I don't think is really accurate.
JG went along with the things he had to go along with to keep his Dallas job as long as he did, you can say that.
But he was not "yes, sir, you're right, sir, whatever you say, sir" about it.
From both fan board comments and Ed Werder reports, Garrett let Jerrah know that he thought it was a mistake to take the play calling away from him. Garrett particularly resented not being able to call plays in his last year, when he was coaching for his job, and was expressing that resentment up to the end.
The positive spin would be that JG believes in himself. How constructively that is going to work out when he takes the step down from HC back to coordinator is to be determined.

Mara was quoted other day saying "he would be fine (with JG being OC), but at the end of the day, it's Joe's decision".

Also happy I can stop compulsively checking BBI for this news
Agree
Positives
Has been a top coordinator in the past
Works great with qbs
Has significant experience as head coach and been successful in the division.
Negatives
Some will think this was forced on Judge by the FO. He was possibly recommended, but this was Judge’s call
Some will confuse his performance as a head coach as negative indicator as a coordinator
What system will he run?

Jones next year: 33 td, 13 int, and 5 lost fumbles
Yeah, I always liked Garrett, calm and collected. This is a good hire.
Patience....
Now if Graham can take the next step in establishing himself as an effective coordinator we have the makings of a quality staff.
One more huge hire will be the OL coach. Callahan was fired from Garrett's staff following 2014. Was that jerrah's call or Jason's?
not fair, Engram is already a fraction of Witten
Or Graham. They always do it all at once, this is typical of them.

Man to this day it pisses me off when we let him go
Not happening. He is retired.
Brilliant woman too. She went to Princeton undergrad and Harvard Law School
Also, will help in the 2 games vs Dallas next year since he really knows their personnel.
God knows Gettleman could use a hand
Not a bad thing, but something to keep in mind...

I dont think Garrett had anything to do with how elusive Romo was, how strong Zeke is or how well Witten ran routes
No, this is a very good thing.
C'mon dude. Be happy for once. You were predicting this wouldn't happen just a few hours ago.
It's crystal clear that the Giants have made a longterm investment in Judge. He has NOTHING to worry about.
Based strictly off their media personas, I don’t see Garrett cucking Judge here. Armchairing the personalities, it’s actually a fit.

I'm fine with the hire. He might do well, but talk about swings in opinion.
Freaking love this signing.

This all looks great in January. Let’s see who looks to Judge and who looks to Garrett when the going gets tough in October. If I am Judge, I’’m not feeling too comfortable with a former HC of the year looking over my shoulder.

Not to mention Garrett comes from same Nick Saban line as Joe Judge so it isn’t as tangential as Shula having a connection to Shurmur via Ron Rivera being Andy Reid’s LB Coach
Freaking love this signing.
Somewhat ironically I see it being hated on elsewhere

Garrett seems to have just about the perfect personality for this type of situation.
Can’t believe you missed that pun
Dallas is a talented roster but doesn’t Garrett get some of the credit? And is it remotely possible that the Dallas Cowboys roster is just a tad overrated? You know, this is Dallas we’re talking about. They are always hyped up to some extent. The D really was the bigger disappointment in Dallas. Garret’s offense was terrific.
Might have been time to move on but Dallas was pretty well coached the last 9-10 years, as a whole.
So, would be ecstatic and very pleased if the Giants under Judge’s leadership for the next 10 years only won two first round playoff games? Is that all you need to make you happy and feel content?

for the first time ever I think we have a unanimous approval on BBI for this hire.

you have to be you're referring to Giants.com, those people are dipshits.
But I want you to think of how well STATISTICALLY Romo did. How well Dak did. How well Zeke did. How well Witten did. Think about that O-Line.

Good pot

Did they overlap? I didn’t think so.

Interesting. Thank you shyster.
I don't see any reason to think Garrett has the type of confrontational personality to do that. And even if he did, I also don't see any reason to think he'd even be able to take on Judge who does not appear to be some meek pushover.
Just horrible. He's no different from jerry jones with his meddling
