New RB Coach

Ray_Ray (NYG) : 1/17/2020 8:03 pm
Per Alex Marvez: Source tells @SiriusXMNFL that Burton Burns will be new @Giants RBs coach. Burns is a long-time RBs coach who most recently was @AlabamaFTBL asst athletic director/football
Never heard of him.

Imagine if he can get Saquon to run with more power. Game over for the league

Eight years at Clemson then 13 years at Alabama.
I really like this hire.

I think he brings out the best in Barkley. Think we will see him split out, in slot, shuffle passes and real, true screens!

Just get us Callahan for Oline.....
Hopefully he has a compass and can point Barkley

Callahan would be the icing on the cake of a top offensive staff

Equal parts hard-ass, bad ass, and father figure, few position coaches if any have had an impact quite like Coach Burns. Perhaps only Nick Saban and Scott Cochran can lay claim to being as responsible for Alabamas success as Coach Burns can

Another no nonsense teacher.

older guy with lots of experience in college which might help with a young team.
Interesting

that he is - by far - the old man of the coaching staff.

Philosophically I like this hire
Torrag : 1/17/2020 8:46 pm : link
Saban wants to hit people at the LoS and get his backs vertical into the hole, then cut or jump cut to break out. It's a running game that starts North/South then breaks through into space.

However we have to block better at the OC position to execute it successfully. Halapio or Pulley have no chance to do what this scheme requires from the Center.
He sounds great
Anakim : 1/17/2020 8:46 pm : link
He coached Mark Ingram Jr. and Derrick Henry to Heisman Trophies. Coached guys like Damien Harris, Trent Richardson, Bo Scarbrough, Eddie Lacy, Kenyan Drake, TJ Yeldon...
This is interesting

I was afraid somebody would mention Richardson.

Along with Callahan Ol coach..nice start with Barks
Two very encouraging messages from this hire:
Big Blue Blogger : 1/17/2020 9:02 pm : link
1. A guy who has worked with great coaches believes Judge will succeed.

2. A guy who has worked with great backs believes Barkley is special.

Otherwise, why in the world would he take this job?
I hope a beat writer
YANKEE28 : 1/17/2020 9:04 pm : link
asks how this marriage happened.

Burns stopped coaching 2 years ago. Moved from the sidelines to an administration position.

So did Burns miss coaching so much that he reached out to Judge?

Or did Judge want him as a mentor/coach and ask him to come back to the sidelines?

You can bet they both liked the idea of Burns coaching # 26.

Top notch resume..

Richardson in college was an absolute beast
In the first video jeff57 linked above, Burns
BlueLou'sBack : 1/17/2020 9:17 pm : link
answers the question of how he is such a good recruiter. I fully expect the Giants to sign some beastly RB UDFAs with Burns' help.
Anikim: just kidding about Richardson, obviously.
Big Blue Blogger : 1/17/2020 9:17 pm : link
But what a disaster as a pro. Has any player been BOTH a catastrophic draft pick AND such a horrible acquisition for his second team?

imagining this guy with Barkley plus if we can get Callahan and a few pieces on the OL... I know Garrett has been in favor of running the ball a lot... Let's get the Bark-man a rushing title in the next couple years.

I honestly believe that Solder and Zeitler (especially Zeitler) would have big turnaround years under Judge, Garrett, and Callahan. I refuse to believe all these guys had above-average playing careers before coming to the Giants and then suddenly sucked and fell off a cliff as soon as they got here. It doesn't make sense. I'm convinced that coaching has a ton to do with it. I'm not ready to pull the plug on Solder just yet. His dead cap number would be $13M, which is too large for my liking, and seems we have plenty of cap room in 2020 even with him on the payroll, so let's keep him on. Best case scenario he turns it around and returns to form as an above-average LT, worst case scenario he doesn't make the starting lineup but at least provides valuable depth. I'm willing to bet he at least becomes a serviceable starter though.

Also Hernandez was literally better day 1 of his rookie year than he was at the end under Shurmur. I would've loved this level of turnover in the scouting department but it's good to see it with the coaching.
Ingram high praise

I am impressed with many of these hires. Judge is really looking for teachers, which in todays NFL can be a huge advantage. Being able to develop talent from the draft is key to success
Im sold on him
5BowlsSoon : 1/18/2020 8:52 am : link
Great read on a great coach. Go Saquon go!
The list of RBs he worked with is pretty impressive
TheWalrus : 1/18/2020 9:23 am : link
Mark Ingram
Trent Richardson
Eddie Lacy
T.J. Yeldon
Derrick Henry
Kenyan Drake
Bo Scarborough
Josh Jacobs
Damien Harris

Not sure if he recruited all of these guys but I'm sure he had some role in getting that talent to Alabama. Throw in Glenn Coffee (who had big stats his final year at Alabama in 2009 before abruptly retiring from the NFL during training camp his rookie year) and Alvin Kamara (who left as a freshman after being suspended for behavior problems) and you have a pretty crazy track record of success.

Hopefully he can get a lot out of Saquon, and maybe even elevate Gallman's game as the backup.
I don't know how this went down but it's possible this hiring
BestFeature : 1/18/2020 9:53 am : link
speaks volumes about Judge. Given the guy's age, position, and accomplishments it probably took some convincing.
