Bill Callahan shouldn't be the be-all and end-all

Anakim : 1/17/2020 9:35 pm
Callahan may be one of the best OL coaches in the business and it would be fantastic if we could get him, but there are some pretty damn good OL coaches available.

Marc Columbo - coached that fantastic O-Line of the Cowboys this past season with Jason Garrett. Smith, Collins, Frederick, Martin...yeah the talent was there, but they had to be coached. According to Football Outsiders, the Cowboys offensive line was near the top in nearly all their offensive line metrics:

Second in adjusted line yards
Sixth in running back yards
Second in power rank
First in stuffed rank
First in second level rank
Second in pass protection
Second in sacks allowed
Second in adjusted sack rate
Second overall

Even for you PFF guys, Pro Football Focus graded the Cowboys offensive line high-ranking fourth overall. The unit received the third best run blocking grade and the fifth best pass blocking grade.

Harry Hiestand - coached Ronnie Stanley, Quenton Nelson, Zack Martin, Mike McGlinchey Jr., etc at Notre Dame. Hiestand built a line that won the 2017 Joe Moore Award for the nation’s best line.

James Campen - Campen helped six Packers offensive linemen earn Pro Bowl recognition from 2010 to 2018, the only team in the league to have six different members of the offensive line selected over that span. He helped develop David Bakhtiari from a fourth round pick into one of the best, if not the best, LT in the NFL.

“Coach Campen is a great football coach and he will be missed in our room. He’s been my coach since I was a rookie and has been a huge reason why I am the player I am today — not only because of his instruction but because of the trust and freedom he lets his guys play with.

“I am very grateful for how he stuck with me and kept believing in me through all the injuries. He gave me the confidence to come back from two ACL surgeries and play at a high level.” - Bryan Bulaga

And yeah, Bulaga was a first rounder, but look at some of the other guys he helped develop. Josh Sitton (fourth round, 2008), T.J. Lang (fourth round, 2009), David Bakhtiari (fourth round, 2013), Linsley (fifth round, 2014)...

he's a "free agent"... Dallas let him go.
Callahan has made it happen in multiple spots

though. He’s not the be all end all but we’ve dicked around long enough, just pay him to take this job.

The three guys I mentioned are also "free agents"
Thanks Anak.

I will take exception with the Packers coach. For a while there Rodgers was the most sacked QB in football for the period yo mentioned. Frankly their line was bad.

The Cowboys OL was pretty doggone good. Did not know he was available. Maybe Garrett brings him in - or at least recommends him to Judge.

Whenever I hear Colombo's name, I think of Parcells yelling at him

this is like a good PSA for BBI.

Too many people (self included) get hopes up when it seems like we might get X - then we don't and there's panic in BBI-land.

Agreed and let's face it, at the end of the day we don't know how these coaches will turn out.
Thanks Anakim

I was going to start a new thread asking for other alternatives to Callahan, in case we don’t get him. You did this for me.

We shall see if JJ reaches out to any of the names you’ve posted including Mr Callahan.
All I know is this HC can’t make as big of a mistake as the last HC.

That coach was the worst ever seen!
Seems probable

that Judge and Garrett should have an easy time attracting whoever they want -- provided that person wants a new challenge.
I am friends with Marc Columbos dad...

I have been doing business with him for over 25 years.. I called him yesterday and asked about Marc to the Giants with all the Garrett talk... He told me that Marc hadn't mentioned the Giants at all but that he wouldn't be surprised if something was worked out (if Garret was hired)

Last night after the Garret news became public he texted me "interesting"...

I know "cool story bro" ... However, if he shares anything with me in the coming days about Marc i'll post it..

Cautiously optimistic about the new regime!!!

Good post, Anak. Thanks.
Dave DeGuglielmo?
5BowlsSoon : 1/18/2020 9:08 am : link
If Callahan doesn’t join the Giants, another name Vacchiano suggests to watch is Dave DeGuglielmo, who was recently fired as the Miami Dolphins’ offensive line coach and worked with Judge as the Patriots’ offensive line coach from 2014-15.

DeGuglielmo served as the Giants’ assistant offensive line coach from 2004-2008 under Tom Coughlin.

What do you think of him?
