Next Giants Defensive End?

M.S. : 1/18/2020 6:28 am
The Giants do not have on their current roster a Defensive End who can proficiently set the edge AND rush the passer.

(They don't grow on trees and the 49ers are the envy of every NFL team with guys like Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead and Dee Ford, not to mention that War Daddy, DeForest Buckner, who can slide outside from his DT position).

The Giants have nothing like that, and their defense won't make any significant strides in 2020 until they at least take a positive step in the direction of finding a serious 2-way Defensive End.

Question for BBIers:

WHO is that Defensive End(s) in the Draft and/or Free Agency who can begin to right the Giants ship which is currently submerged in the Hackensack Meadowlands?

Any thoughts/ideas much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
That's because the Niners run a 4-3
robbieballs2003 : 1/18/2020 6:31 am : link
And we have been running a 3-4. I'd be looking for more OLB types that can rush the passer who can eventually put their hand in the turf when we go with a 4 man front. But in terms of a strict 4-3 end that rushes the passer? I wouldn't hold my breath.
Yannick Ngakoue

He’s even hinted multiple times he’d like to come here. But it’s going to take probably $15M+ a year

Closer to $20M
8 sacks

and 41 tackles is not worth close to 20 million. No thanks
How about...
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 1/18/2020 7:46 am : link
Terrell Lewis, OLB Alabama, in the second round. Much cheaper. Lots of potential.
Got to get Shaq Barrett

LOL typical BBI’er only looking at sack stats. Williams sucks too right?

Yep and would be well worth it.

37.5 sacks and 13 forced fumbles in four seasons. Fantastic player.
Yannick Ngakwe
Allen in CNJ : 1/18/2020 8:21 am : link
Brings so much more to the table than what his actual numbers show. He has tremendous technique and is extremely disruptive in the passing game and is solid against the run. He's worth every penny you'll pay him as long as it's not 20M+
There is a need to strike gold in this free agency years OT, Edge and
Ivan15 : 1/18/2020 8:25 am : link
Safety. 2 of 3 need to be gems. But you can’t do it by throwing gold at them.

Giants need to take the time to see how the market develops.

Bingo, someone that actually watches!
YETUR GROSS-MATOS
nzyme : 1/18/2020 9:31 am : link
Now this guy is more of a 4-3 guy but IMHO he uses his hands better than Chase Young and he's just as explosive.

Yannick Ngakoue should be the target
Rjanyg : 1/18/2020 9:43 am : link
Everyone knows we need to either draft or sign a pass rusher. I love Chase Young but we are now out of reach. The good news is we have enough cap to make a splash or 2 this year and every effort must be made to sign an ER. The defense needs speed and play makers on each level.

Re-sign Leo Williams and add Ngokoue. Draft Isaiah Simmons. This is a good plan toward making our front 7 fast.

But so many want to give Clowney huge bucks.

He's never been a top tier pass rusher.
Gross-Matos is gonna be really good once he gets a bit stronger.
yatqb : 1/18/2020 11:14 am : link
I wish he’d last till our 2nd round pick, but no chance of that.

Spot on Pal... He's on a list of "value" players I have currently.
Kid is a beast and I hope he continues to stay under the radar so we can have a shot at him with #36... But I'm afraid the combine is going to expose him fully and push him into round one... Lets hope not haha... For us
Clowney
Vanzetti : 1/18/2020 11:34 am : link
He is a game changer.

He has become a leader on D and nobody hustles more. He is all over the field.

Don't let the low sack totals fool you: he is incredibly disruptive and plays both the pass and run.
Ngakoue
Vanzetti : 1/18/2020 11:35 am : link
a close second to Clowney imo

either one would be great (albeit overpaid)
You have to target Yannik.
Rudy5757 : 1/18/2020 11:46 am : link
This is not a wait and see offseaso . we need to target specific players and go hard at them. Players like Yannik don't hit FA often, you go get them. We have to go into the draft with a solid roster. Get a top DE and sign an aging vet to rotate the other side. Get slot CB so Beal & Baker can play outside. Slot CB should be a little cheaper. Maybe we get okuda in the draft. Get a true FS.

On O we need to get a top OT and a solid Center. The rest of the O we can fill in. We should have FA money to get that done. Hopefully Judge and the staff can do some magic like they do in NE and take low end FA and maximize what they do well.

It is almost a certainty he costs more then $20m. I will be surprised if he doesn't become the highest paid edge rusher in history. My guess is something like 5 years/$110 million, $70 million guaranteed.
Yannick Ngakoue
Jay on the Island : 1/18/2020 2:06 pm : link
I would be surprised if he doesn't receive 20 million per season due to the lack of FA options and the amount of teams with surplus cap room. Ngakoue is only 24 years old. It's not often that 24 year old proven pass rushers hit the free agent market. Will he be overpaid? Yes but this is a move the Giants should make. Gettleman needs to stop with the older veterans unless it is a 1 year deal.

I hope the Giants mimic the 2005 offseason when the Giants signed young FA's Burress, McKenzie, and Pierce.

I thought I read somewhere that they run the Wide 9, a 4-3 look with 3-4 personnel.

Curtis Weaver excellent pass rusher 6'3" 265, either stand up or hand on the ground. 2 nd round might be there if they take OT in first.
I bet Yannick will get $25mm avg value per year
cosmicj : 1/18/2020 3:30 pm : link
The FA market will be very thin and flooded with cap room.

Absurd
Let me roll that Yannick prediction back slightly
cosmicj : 1/19/2020 3:25 am : link
IF he hits the open market (ie the Jags don’t tag him) I predict he will get $23mm per year.

That’s slightly higher than last years big DE contract, DeMarcus Lawrence ($21.0mm) and Frank Clark ($20.8mm). Ngakoue is slightly younger than both players, both of whom negotiated those contracts with teams that had the negotiation leverage of a tag. With inflation, I say $23mm per.

He neither exceeded expectations, nor disappointed in year one of it. So he is still in the mix. Let's see what the new coaching staff does with him in year two of the project.

People better get up to speed quickly on what $20M AAV is going to buy in a FA market as flush with cap room league-wide as this one is.

IMO, we're going to see contracts handed out which put the general price tag for pretty good players at around the same AAV that star players have been making the past few years.

I'll take Curtis Weaver. He is fantastic. Built like a fire hydrant with a surprising quick get-off. I'd definitely snag him with our 36th pick. My guess: Dallas will take him because they use Boise State as their farm system!

I'd pass on Clowney. He already has injury problems and can be inconsistent. Lets spend wisely
