A lot of attention on the offensive staff, but if we are being honest, Patrick Graham's resume is not impressive. That doesn't mean he can't be an up-and-comer. He's young (40) and the players seem to like him.
But we need good position coaches around him. No word on any hires yet with Roach pulling out.

Have to hope that one of the 3 defensive position coaches hired has NFL experience similar to Garrett.

I mean, that just is not going to happen. If we were going to get someone with a ton of experience, it would have been as a coordinator.
And guess what? I'm ok with that. Bettcher was an experienced DC and flopped terribly. Not to puppet Judge, but we need teachers, because we have a lot of young talent on the defensive side of the ball. Or at least young players. But X-Man, Carter, Tomlinson, BJ Hill, Lawrence, Beal, and Baker were all drafted with premium picks (Rounds 1-3).
He was DC for a year with a defense where is best players were injured or ejected. Disappointing that Fitz didn’t want to play for him and moved on to the Steelers.
Gotta give the guy a chance.

Graham has been employed in the NFL nonstop since 2009 so it is not like he is completely inexperienced. Steve Wilks came up as a DB coach. Perhaps if Kevin Stefanski goes in a different direction (perhaps by hiring George Edwards), Freddie Kitchens might recommend Wilks to Judge.
I can almost assure you that it will be better than what we've seen the last couple years. Hopefully, it's exponentially better.
I grant you it isn't a 'great resume' as a DC to date but there are reasons to be optimistic about the hire.
The staff will play a big role and that's still a work in progress.
2014-2015: Linebackers Coach, New England Patriots
2012-2013: Defensive Line Coach, New England Patriots
2011: Linebackers Coach, New England Patriots
2010: Defensive Assistant Coach, New England Patriots
2009: Coaching Assistant, New England Patriots
6 years under BB
Would be a huge win if we could sign him up as "Defensive Pass Game Coordinator." Wonder if the ties to Garrett would help that. Jerome Henderson, another former Garrett assistant, has been linked with us for a DB coach job though.

We felt assured that Bettcher was going to be better too. Going back to the last Super Bowl, we really haven't had top notch defensive coaches in a long time. Yes, most of it is talent, but our guys have looked like chickens running around with their heads cut off for a decade now.
Brentson Buckner - DL coach
George Edwards - LB coach
Antonio Pierce - LB coach
Joey Porter - LB coach - how fucking cool would that be?
Marquand Manuel - DB coach
Kris Richard - DB coach
Jerome Henderson - DB coach
Jerry Gray - DB coach
Ray Horton - DB coach
Perry Fewell - DB coach - for shits and giggles :P

If Kansas City loses tomorrow, what about their Cornerbacks coach, Sam Madison? Browns DC under Kitchens, Steve Wilks, also came up as a DB coach.
when Thomas McGaughey was going thru some health issues in the past year.
I didn't know they were going to keep him around though.
not to speak for Emlen but there's a pretty weak interview of him up on Giants.com. OTOH there's also a mic'd up video of him during a game which shows a much stronger presence.
Arizona State the last couple of years (his alma mater).
Kris Richard should be someone to look at, I would think now.

I think KR would be a HUGE get. first off, he and JG could really help against dallas' personnell. secondly and more importantly, he is good with DBs and we have a ton of young players!
Who cares? He’s an assistant. He’s not running STs. He does have a ton of experience and I think he’s been good with the kickers and punters, exception being last year with Rosas.
Graham's got some dog in him.
Graham Mic'd Up - ( New Window )
They were assumed to be tanking and traded off their best guys, they had less then zero talent
The way I would look at it is he is a New England Assistant with DC experience and both Flores and Judge saw fit to make him their DC.
I don’t think he can be looked at as a guy who had a bad year at DC.
I also don’t read anything into Miami allowing Graham to walk, we have no idea what the arrangements there were.
Sure it would be nice to be pencilling in a Wade Phillips type at DC but that wouldn’t align with what Judge wants to establish here.

Tom quinn!! Yes!!
We could hire a retread and suck. Nobody can say for sure. It is encouraging that those in the know outside of the organization have praised a number of Judge’s hires.
I now know a lot about Judge so I will definitely give him the benefit of doubt for now and root hard for Graham to succeed.
But, he will need several key men working with him to coordinate the shaping of a good defense. Here’s hoping for a few good men to rise up.
