Defensive staff is still going to be decisive

Eric from BBI : Admin : 1/18/2020 11:13 am
A lot of attention on the offensive staff, but if we are being honest, Patrick Graham's resume is not impressive. That doesn't mean he can't be an up-and-comer. He's young (40) and the players seem to like him.

But we need good position coaches around him. No word on any hires yet with Roach pulling out.

on that.

Have to hope that one of the 3 defensive position coaches hired has NFL experience similar to Garrett.

I mean, that just is not going to happen. If we were going to get someone with a ton of experience, it would have been as a coordinator.

And guess what? I'm ok with that. Bettcher was an experienced DC and flopped terribly. Not to puppet Judge, but we need teachers, because we have a lot of young talent on the defensive side of the ball. Or at least young players. But X-Man, Carter, Tomlinson, BJ Hill, Lawrence, Beal, and Baker were all drafted with premium picks (Rounds 1-3).
There were several more experienced DCs available but maybe he has
Ivan15 : 1/18/2020 11:20 am : link
What it takes. Apparently, JJ thinks so.

He was DC for a year with a defense where is best players were injured or ejected. Disappointing that Fitz didn’t want to play for him and moved on to the Steelers.

Gotta give the guy a chance.
Why in tarnation is Tom effin Quinn still here in ANY capacity?

Graham has been employed in the NFL nonstop since 2009 so it is not like he is completely inexperienced. Steve Wilks came up as a DB coach. Perhaps if Kevin Stefanski goes in a different direction (perhaps by hiring George Edwards), Freddie Kitchens might recommend Wilks to Judge.
Fully agree ...
Spider56 : 1/18/2020 11:23 am : link
If JJ wants to be a smash mouth, blue collar team he has to have a strong defense, led by strong coaches... I thought Roach was a good start and I’m disappointed he changed his mind. Hopefully there’s good stuff going on behind the scenes and they’ll fill in the gaps this week.

I'm impressed with how the offensive staff is coming together. Let's wait and see who fills out the defensive staff.
I was comforted by Avery Moss' contrast
Mr. Bungle : 1/18/2020 11:30 am : link
between Bettcher's mess of complexity and Graham's more learnable and flexible system.

I can almost assure you that it will be better than what we've seen the last couple years. Hopefully, it's exponentially better.
'Patrick Graham's resume is not impressive'
Torrag : 1/18/2020 11:32 am : link
I'd put it a different way. I'd say he grades out as an incomplete as a DC so far but with a few positive signs. If you watched the 'Fins final game against New England you saw an undermanned unit playing with good technique and playing hard. They had their ups and downs this season but imo overachieved their talent. he was groomed on defense by 'Lil Bill in new England and Banks thinks highly of him from his time here as well.

I grant you it isn't a 'great resume' as a DC to date but there are reasons to be optimistic about the hire.

The staff will play a big role and that's still a work in progress.
DC resume thin but there's this

Would be a huge win if we could sign him up as "Defensive Pass Game Coordinator." Wonder if the ties to Garrett would help that. Jerome Henderson, another former Garrett assistant, has been linked with us for a DB coach job though.

We felt assured that Bettcher was going to be better too. Going back to the last Super Bowl, we really haven't had top notch defensive coaches in a long time. Yes, most of it is talent, but our guys have looked like chickens running around with their heads cut off for a decade now.
Our new DC's personality seems studious and a bit soft to me....
Emlen'sGremlins : 1/18/2020 11:48 am : link
….therefore I'd like to see him employ some positional coaches with a bit of the "dog" mentality in them. Would like to see Buckner or Pepper coach the D-Line and Pierce at LB.
He definitely needs some
illmatic : 1/18/2020 11:52 am : link
very good position coaches to help him out. They need to add more defensive talent too. I don't know what the plan is if they can't add Ngakoue. They need some pass rushers in the worst way.
Good Point
SLIM_ : 1/18/2020 11:53 am : link
I’m still hoping for a guy like Richards to be added but I think equally as important is bringing in some veteran players for leadership. The two most experienced vets on defense last year, Ogletree and Bethea, were arguably the two worst players. Hard to lead when you Suck.
Some guys out there:
Anakim : 1/18/2020 11:54 am : link
Pepper Johnson - DL coach
Brentson Buckner - DL coach
George Edwards - LB coach
Antonio Pierce - LB coach
Joey Porter - LB coach - how fucking cool would that be?
Marquand Manuel - DB coach
Kris Richard - DB coach
Jerome Henderson - DB coach
Jerry Gray - DB coach
Ray Horton - DB coach
Perry Fewell - DB coach - for shits and giggles :P

If Kansas City loses tomorrow, what about their Cornerbacks coach, Sam Madison? Browns DC under Kitchens, Steve Wilks, also came up as a DB coach.

is still around the premises I see...I think he filled in
when Thomas McGaughey was going thru some health issues in the past year.
I didn't know they were going to keep him around though.
concerns about Graham are legit
bluepepper : 1/18/2020 12:08 pm : link
but Judge knows him from NE and the Giants FO knows him from his time here. That tells me there's more than a few people in the building confident he can do the job.

not to speak for Emlen but there's a pretty weak interview of him up on Giants.com. OTOH there's also a mic'd up video of him during a game which shows a much stronger presence.
Not hard to be optimistic about the offense
j_rud : 1/18/2020 12:12 pm : link
as well as stuff like clock and in-game management. But the defense is still likely to struggle. Especially early. Do we remember what Miami's defense looked like early last season? They gave up over 160 points through week 4 and while they settled in somewhat it was still pretty ugly most weeks.
I wouldn't mind

The Dolphins defense was looking good, then they sold off players, I am not certain who was calling the shots either, it is a risk, but I am giving Judge the benefit of the doubt. Belechick liked him enough to have him on his staff too, he has enough experience and is still young, I have a good feeling about him. I did for Betcher also, but I trust Judge.

He played under Judge and Graham and is currently a Defensive Assistant in Detroit with Patricia. Maybe he's ready to step up to Asst. Secondary Coach or something along those lines.

the one play that defines the absurdity of our defense was the game-winning TD by the Eagles in Philly when they were down to Zach Ertz and the Giants still left him wide open in the end zone. Giants defenders just stared at each other.

Impossible to judge Graham off last season
twostepgiants : 1/18/2020 4:47 pm : link
No pun intended

They were assumed to be tanking and traded off their best guys, they had less then zero talent

The way I would look at it is he is a New England Assistant with DC experience and both Flores and Judge saw fit to make him their DC.

I don’t think he can be looked at as a guy who had a bad year at DC.

I also don’t read anything into Miami allowing Graham to walk, we have no idea what the arrangements there were.

Sure it would be nice to be pencilling in a Wade Phillips type at DC but that wouldn’t align with what Judge wants to establish here.

we are rebooting again. No one knows what will happen. It could suck all over again. First time HC, seriously. Just hope these owners do not pull a weasel move and use the options as transition coaches if things do not go well. So much wrong with this team at all levels, org, talent, coaching, winning.

We could hire a retread and suck. Nobody can say for sure. It is encouraging that those in the know outside of the organization have praised a number of Judge’s hires.

What do we know about Graham?

I now know a lot about Judge so I will definitely give him the benefit of doubt for now and root hard for Graham to succeed.

But, he will need several key men working with him to coordinate the shaping of a good defense. Here’s hoping for a few good men to rise up.
