Coaching Staff Speculation From Art Stapleton

If I'm making my predictions:

OL will be either Bill Callahan or Dave DeGuglielmo

TE - we'll see. Kitchens? O'Shea?

Don't think Pepper leaves DC job in XFL

Sounds like Linehan was backup option at OC if Garrett turned them down

Pierce very interesting for LB.

may be right about Peppers, but if Peppers wants to get back into the NFL, this would be a good opportunity. Weird how his career went after New England.

Linehan may have been a back-up option at OC, but the original report made it sound like he was interviewing with three teams for a lesser staff position.

the silence on Callahan is deafening.

If I am rembering correctly, BB never made Pepper a DC and probably had the chance to. His ceiling may have been DC or LB coach and he may not want to accept that.

But that's just a wag (wild asses guess) on my part.

there was a tweet about his services being in high demand so I will not be shocked if we get outbid.

I'd be curious to know what went down because at one point it looked like he was being groomed for the DC position. Then he bounces around a couple of NFL teams and then is out of the NFL. Weird.
Outside of no other reason than fandom

I would like to see Pierce back with the Giants coaching LBs. He wasn't the most athletic, but he was smart on the field.

Might be evidence that LB, DL is his ceiling. They ought to change the pay scale so each position coach can get encouraged to stay at the level of their strengths and talents. There is always that expectation that they have to climb the ladder and a good deal of that is salary. Obviously, position coaches are not going get bigger salaries than HCs but coordinator and position coaches should be considered a terminal positions with adequate compensation.

The Late Great Philadelphia DC Jim Johnson is arguably one of the best examples of a coordinator who was content being a coordinator - and there were few better at his position.
I can't see Chad O'Shea coming here as TE Coach
TheWalrus : 1/18/2020 12:16 pm : link
He hasn't coached the TE position since 1999. I think it's a lot more likely he goes back to New England to his old job as WR Coach.

Freddie Kitchens makes much more sense, unless he wants to take a year off after the emotional roller coaster he has been on in Cleveland the last two seasons.

Will Hall could be a target for the job with his long running ties to Judge, but he might prefer to run a college offense.

There's no clear Garrett linked candidate, as Mike Pope retired, Doug Nussmeier accepted the QB Coach job under McCarthy, and his first TE coach (his brother) is a college head coach these days.

A couple of outside the box names that I've thought of: Current Titans Defensive Assistant Scott Booker was the TE Coach at Notre Dame for a while and now has an ancillary connection to Patriot World through Vrabel. John McNulty was Rutgers OC the last two years and was the Chargers TE Coach before that. Kevin M. Gilbride just got fired by the Bears but was decent with TE here under McAdoo. Lastly, Morgan Turner has built quite the pipeline of TEs at Stanford and if I was an NFL Head Coach I'd want to know if he'd jump ship after 7 years without getting a promotion out there.
Callahan would be great
GiantsRage2007 : 1/18/2020 12:17 pm : link
It would really signal that they are serious about fixing the OL issues they have had for the better part of a decade.

I fully anticipate an underwhelming hire though.
It better not be between those two OP coaches
robbieballs2003 : 1/18/2020 12:20 pm : link
otherwise Callahan becomes the top hire this team can make.
OL not OP
robbieballs2003 : 1/18/2020 12:20 pm : link

Linehan probably was a back up plan
5BowlsSoon : 1/18/2020 12:25 pm : link
Because I read Garrett had to take the offer back him to his family for their okay. Apparently that took a few days so the Giants were just doing their due diligence just in case Garrett said no thanks. And I’m sure Garrett gave his recommendation to his good friend too.
Giants want Callahan?
5BowlsSoon : 1/18/2020 12:28 pm : link
Not sure of the credibility here.

If this is true, let’s hope Rhule also doesn’t want him, but I have a feeling Rhule is getting advice from Coughlin and other NFL people who I’m sure are telling him Callahan is the man for this.
Giants want him - ( New Window )

I like your thoughts about Morgan Turner for TE coach. He has been incredibly successful at Stanford.

Turner coached Jim Dray (local kid) at Stanford who went on to have an average NFL career. When Drays NFL playing days were over, he went back to Stanford as an assistant offense coach with Turner.

Last year Freddie Kitchens hired Dray away from Stanford to be an offensive assistant on the Cleveland Browns staff.

announcement with Carolina, but the rumors are that Pat Flaherty was already hired by Rhule to coach the Panthers O Line.

Coughlin would have likely had a hand in that, no?
When
YANKEE28 : 1/18/2020 12:43 pm : link
Rhule was the Giants Assistant O Line coach, the O Line coach was Pat Flaherty. So Rhule certainly knew Flaherty's coaching skills.
Pierce would be a nice addition
giantsfan227B : 1/18/2020 1:08 pm : link
Thought he was a solid player, smart. I think he would be a great addition as a LB coach.

Just saw a flash that Luke Kuechly is open to coaching in the NFL. I know the Giants are putting a premium on experienced coaches but that would be an interesting hire as well. Young, up to date in modern defense and with Rivera going to DC would know his schemes.
I think, depending on JGs relationship with
Simms11 : 1/18/2020 1:12 pm : link
Callahan, that Callahan would be a tremendous get for this team. If JG is comfortable with it, I would hope Giants would be doing everything possible to get him, considering how poor our Oline has been. The last few Oline coaches have been extremely underwhelming!

WTF was Shurmur thinking when he hired Hunter. That one position alone could have done him in.

Personally I am glad that Flaherty wasn't brought back by Judge. He was fired from Jacksonville, hired by Miami, and then fired by Miami before he started his first season.

Hmm so there's a ancillary connection there then. It's still probably Kitchens but I would love to see Turner. Maybe Dray gets a coaching role here if Kitchens is TE Coach.
If Callahan ends up in Carolina

There are reports (Giants Wire) of a 2014 fall out with Garrett. They may or may not have buried the hatchet and that could account for the silence.
That’s funny about Flaherty, who was lauding Rhule
cosmicj : 1/19/2020 4:01 am : link
In the press during the swirl of rumors that the Giants were about to hire Rhule. It shows one more positive press mention of Rhule was not an impartial opinion.
Another TE Coach possibility
Mike in NY : 1/19/2020 9:24 am : link
Former Missouri OC/QB Coach and University of Tennesee head coach Derek Dooley. Coached under Nick Saban at LSU, was his TE coach with the Dolphins on the same staff as Jason Garrett, and spent time as Garrett’s WR coach in Dallas. Drew Lock really took a step forward under his guidance.
Btw, I wouldn’t mind Marc Colombo
Big Blue '56 : 1/19/2020 1:23 pm : link
as OL coach. I think he’s a solid up and comer

I honestly think the beginning of the end for Shurmur was after the 2018 season he announced the coaching staff would remain in place for 2019 with no changes.

It struck me then that there was no self awareness/scouting to identify and improve on the issues from '18 that carried over to '19. Which is exemplifyed the OL.
