Judge and Garrett both emphasized being physical up front
nyjuggernaut2 : 1/18/2020 2:03 pm : link
hopefully Gettleman can get the right pieces in place up front this offseason and finally fix the OL
Great interview. sounds
TMS : 1/18/2020 2:11 pm : link
like he and Judge have the same philosophy. JG will not have to deal with Jones here and that has to make a difference. His focus will be just offense which I think is his strong suit. HC will be all Judge and free coordinators and coaches to work their own turf. like the whole concept so far.
I didn't know it was possible to have a flexible system built
PatersonPlank : 1/18/2020 2:15 pm : link
around the strengths of the players we have. I thought the only way to go was to jam the players into one system, regardless if ts a good fit or not.

What a novel concept

David B. : 1/18/2020 2:19 pm : link
Nothing against Garrett, but there was no substance in this interview. Just the same generalizations we got from Judge, and frankly from Graham as well.

Judge/Garrett: Depending on the opponent, some times we'll run the ball a lot, sometimes we'll throw the ball a lot.

Graham: Some times we'll be in 3-4, some times we'll be in 4-3, or 4-3-5

I understand it's really early days, but so far all they're doing is parroting the Joe Judge party line. Not that I'd expect a lot more than that for now.
So all of our coaches are on the same page
SteelGiant : 1/18/2020 2:23 pm : link
And that page is fundamentals and flexibility. What a concept. This is really the answer is all lines of business but it is amazing how may people think they cant invent a better answer. This is all music to my ears.

Good luck coaches - I hope it shows on the field as quickly as possible. I am not expecting miracles just steady improvements.....but I will take a miracle happily :)

The importance of teaching, communication, and being flexible and physical is not what I remember Shurmur ever saying.

It will take time but having a cohesive philosophy among the coaches is a very good first step.

Seems like coach judge is doing a good job of establishing culture. Culture starts from the top of what to emphasize. It is up to each level to infuse that through the organization.

has got to be a bit strange for Garrett, being such a long-time head coach and now under a 38-year old ST coach. Nature of the business.

I hope we don't run a lot of the 4-3-5. That'll be a 5 yard penalty :)

Possibly but I have never thought of Garrett as someone with an ego. He sounds like he is very easy to work with.
Not sure either of these two are a good fit.

Neither one of these two coaches gave me any feeling that they were building a team of heavy handed, men of integrity that could protect the duke. SMDH.

in a loooong time.

Must admit I liked Betcher hire, even though I prefer a more bend but don't break defense as opposed to Betcher's attacking defense, which we saw constantly go awry this year.

Certainly didn’t keep offenses from attacking the middle of the field at will on 3rd and 7+ yards

This is also a great resume-rebuilding role. Imagine Garrett as a head coaching candidate 2 years from now, if the Giants have become one of the better offenses in the league

This post sounds deep, but it's not. Were you expecting a Ph.D. dissertation from these coaches? If so you have to adjust your expectations. Judge had a 7-minute press conference, he was supposed to go in-depth about his entire coaching philosophy? It was already more in-depth than every other PC.

yes but he knows this is temporary. He will get head coaching interviews after next season
Love the part near the beginning
NYFootballGiants : 1/18/2020 6:46 pm : link
where he says that he and Judge had a 30-45 minute conversation that "could've gone on all night." Our staff seems to be building chemistry and continuity before it even gets to the field, which is a key to success. These guys get each other and are on the same page. That should equal a trickle-down effect to the players and I think these guys will connect to the players infinitely better than the guys we had the last couple of years. I'm looking forward to the success these guys have with our young roster. With this offseason of further building the team, I'm looking for us to be a better team that competes.

Garrett either loves football and can't stay away or figures that a good offensive year with the Giants is the best way to get another HC offer. Given his money, I can't think of any other reason that he would move your family across country and be willing to work for a 38 yr old former ST coach.

I know right? I've heard some teams even adjust their schemes and game plan at half time and throughout the game depending on what the opponent is doing and what is working and not working. It's probably just one of those new age fads though that will die out over time, like the wishbone offense or the forward pass.

I just don't think so. He did not have enough success with the Cowboys to return to coaching that quickly. Whereas McCarthy had a very good overall record and won a SB (even if it was with Rodgers), Garrett did not enjoy that type of success to warrant receiving a coaching job that quickly.

I suppose that could change if the Giants dominate offensively and the team improves markedly, but it would be surprising if Garrett didn't have to wait at least a couple years before getting another chance.

He is not that different than Marvin Lewis, and Lewis has not gotten another chance after having similar success with the Bengals.

I thought it was a good PC. Really, what more is he supposed to say? The Cowboys liked Daniel Jones, and he holds him in high regard. He also said that how they play will depend on the game. Some games you have to run more, others you have to throw. Even the types of runs and passes will vary game by game.

You get the feeling that he will seek for teams' weaknesses and look to exploit them. If a team can't cover the RB out of the backfield, get Barkley passes. You get the point.

If he takes a HC job with another team he'd have to move his family to that team's city. And regardless of how much money he has, his family has become accustomed to a certain lifestyle that would not be sustainable if he just stopped working for the rest of his life.

My guess is once he was fired from the Cowboys he doesn't really have any ties to that area anymore. I believe he has a good amount of family here? And his wife's family is here too I believe. So why not move back to be closer to family AND take a job with the Giants since it's not like he's going to retire and it's not like he can just take a job with the Giants any time. Who knows maybe his angle is to coach here for a year or 2 and then take the Jets HC job once Gase is thrown out.

Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 1/19/2020 8:25 am : link
just wants to enjoy what they do. Therse are all competitive people, but it isn't really clear that being the HC is always the best job in an organization. I would think having coached for Jerry might teach you that. So, we will see how he does. And hope for success.

He probably only gets a HC gig if this goes well.
