Brandon Jacobs vs. Derrick Henry

Bergen346 : 1/18/2020 10:39 pm
I think it is safe to say Henry is the superior athlete and player, but I think this is pretty incredible:

Brandon Jacobs: 6’4” 264lbs.... 40 yard dash: 4.56 seconds

Derrick Henry: 6’3” 247lbs.... 40 yard dash: 4.54 seconds

Brandon Jacobs was an inch taller and 17lbs heavier and still had incredible straight forward speed. Man I miss watching him play.

Jacobs/Bradshaw 1-2 punch was some of the most fun Giants football we have had in a long time.
Jacobs was good
upnyg : 1/18/2020 10:45 pm : link
for a short period of time. Henry is better.
However our Earth, Wind, and fire combo and Thunder and Lighting was effective.

Mdgiantsfan : 1/18/2020 10:54 pm : link
yeah the talk is that Henry is this unicorn but BJac preceded him and was a similar challenge for defenses.
Hitting rules have changed a bit over the past 10 years
bigschott : 1/18/2020 11:06 pm : link
Brandon Jacobs took a bunch of hits that Derick Henry isnt taking.

Not suggesting Jacobs as good, only that longevity was more difficult for a back their size a decade ago...

I think Henry is a better back but not drastically better or distinctive from BJac.
Jacobs looked to run over people ...
Manny in CA : 1/18/2020 11:55 pm : link

Henry gets to he hole a lot quicker, then for a man his size is very fluid . Then when does make contact, breaks tackles.
despite Jacobs' speed
PaulBlakeTSU : 1/19/2020 12:29 am : link
he didn't have the penchant for the long home run TDs like Henry.

Here are Jacobs 10 longest TD runs (in 1141 attempts)
74, 43, 40, 30, 28, 26, 19, 12, 10, 10

Here are Henry's 10 longest TD runs (in 804 attempts)
99, 75, 75,74, 72, 68, 66, 54, 53, 23
Jacobs

next question.
I think both are incredible
beatrixkiddo : 1/19/2020 12:53 am : link
In their own right.

But give me Brandon Motherfucking Jacobs on my team any day. That man is a true Giant, he hated our rivals with a passion and punished defenses. He set the whole tone if we are going to pinch you in the mouth on both sides of the ball. Love him, and will always remember what he gave on the field.
I loved Jacobs
santacruzom : 1/19/2020 1:13 am : link
But there isn't a single non Giants fan alive who'd take him over Derrick Henry. An
Jacobs actively looked to truck defenders
Coach Red Beaulieu : 1/19/2020 4:38 am : link
Henry breaks tackles like Beastmode. Giants fans should be very familiar when backs like Henry and Beastmode just breaks the will of a D.

We don't win those 2 SBs without Jacobs, who was unique.
It’s the 40 time but the 7 yard time
V.I.G. : 1/19/2020 5:48 am : link
That is the difference. Henry much quicker to the edge.
Would Henry have broken the playclock at the old Texas

Stadium?

Man I miss that guy
Comparing the 2 is laughable
Rudy5757 : 1/19/2020 7:43 am : link
Henry is by far the better back. Jacobs needed a head of steam to get going, he wasn't good creating on his own. Jacobs could easily be tackled by his feet and Henry is nimble for his size. I love Jacobs for what he did and brought to the Giants but anyone who would take Jacobs over Henry is just being a homer.
Take off the blue colored glasses
RobCarpenter : 1/19/2020 8:27 am : link
Henry has much, much better lateral movement, vision, quickness and burst. Jacobs is only similar in size.
Henry
PaulN : 1/19/2020 9:08 am : link
Is a featured back, Jacobs was part of a platoon combination with Bradshaw. There is really no comparison other then they are both big.
well
giantfan2000 : 1/19/2020 9:12 am : link
I loved Brandon Jacobs .. but he had his issues
he would often try to bounce outside rather than go thru middle and he did not have outside speed
also Jacobs was massive guy but he could easily be brought down if someone when went for his ankles -- like ridiculously easy.

I seem to recall Jacobs longest play being a pass. Am I recalling correctly?
Brandon Jacobs
nzyme : 1/19/2020 9:19 am : link
Why? Because Derrick Henry does not do THIS!!!!. Haven't seen him to do that to anyone. He breaks tackles but I've never seen him impose his will on an opposing player like Brandon Jacobs.

You are correct. I went to Pro-Football-Reference and sorted by longest TDs and so I misspoke. BJ's 74-yard TD was receiving (as was his third-longest, 40-yard TD)

I couldn't find an index of all of their rushes, and so I figured the HRs would turn into TDs which is why i only sorted by long TDs.
Jacobs had the fear factor going for him. He was so big
Marty in Albany : 1/19/2020 9:30 am : link
that it was scary.

If you are standing safely on the sideline and he starts running in your direction, you're first impulse is to get out of the way the same way you want to avoid a run-away truck.

One time, after a practice at SUNY, I saw Brandon and Tiki walking together. As they walked past me I asked Tiki a question about his helmet. Jacobs was too intimidating for me to even look at to talk to.
.... Jacobs Bradshaw 1-2 punch
90.Cal : 1/19/2020 9:51 am : link
How dare you forget Ward.
Theres no reason to be a homer about this.
Ten Ton Hammer : 1/19/2020 9:57 am : link
Its Henry.
The legend of Jacbos grows and grows on BBI
PatersonPlank : 1/19/2020 10:01 am : link
He was a nice complement to Bradshaw, and a good Giant that fans liked to root for. He was never an everyday starting NFL RB, and no where near Henry's class.
Henry is a better RB....

Yup. Love Jacobs he’s a great Giants. But anyone that would take him over Henry in their primes is lying or crazy.
Jacobs was far more physical in spots.
BlueLou'sBack : 1/19/2020 10:36 am : link
(See the 1st play vs the Packers in the championship game in 2011/2.)

But Henry has much, much better contact balance, and I think great vision as well.

He generated more yards after contact I guess (don't have stats back up.)
Jacobs wasn't as good as Henry but....first time I saw Henry run
Blue21 : 1/19/2020 10:55 am : link
I thought Jacobs. Similar style IMO. Henry is a little lighter and looks faster. I think he get's to second gear quicker. But they remind me of each other. There's no dipsy doodle theres's just balls to the wall.
Surprised at people saying that Henry is by far better.
Scuzzlebutt : 1/19/2020 11:11 am : link
Henry was considered a bust up until the last few weeks of last season. Jacobs was more physical and his straight line speed was just as good. We will see how long Henry’s career lasts.

Henry is a heisman winner and feature back. Jacobs was a role play back on a good Giants team. No comparison.

Plus Henry starred at Bama, Jacobs played for vaunted Southern Illinois. Jacobs was a 4th rod (I think) flyer who worked out well, a good role player.

In the OP I stated that Henry is the superior back and a much better athlete. The point of the thread is that I found it interesting that Jacobs was bigger (17lbs is a lot of extra weight to carry) but still had incredible speed for his size. That’s all.

Certainly cannot forgot Ward, but I personally enjoyed watching Bradshaws running style more than DW... but now we’re splitting hairs.
I’d take them both or either

I love me a traditional ground and pound offensive scheme. I miss those days.

Giants could use a Jacobs to complement Barkley. Or vice versa
jacobs flaw

too much pitty pat behind LOS.
great with a head of steam though.
