Are you feeling good about the state of the team thus far?

Sean : 1/19/2020 9:47 am
It’s been 3 weeks since the season ended. Unfortunately, the season was lost in October again, so the speculation begun early this year. I’d say the overall feeling here was that Shurmur would be retained while his staff would be overhauled. A lot here thought that Mara would not want to fire Shurmur so soon.

As the losses piled up though, it was tougher and tougher to envision Shurmur returning. The question then turned to Gettleman. A nice Eli farewell win was able to distract everyone briefly. But, a lot has happened in 3 weeks:

-Most people here said Mara would go the safe route with HC (Rivera, McCarthy or Garrett). He did not go this route, he went far riskier. Taking a chance on Joe Judge & finally hiring a true CEO type coach. The hire is refreshing to me, because it represents a change in direction (less focused on the offense, more on the program/overall team).

-Judge seems to have full authority on the staff. People will point to Garrett as reason to not think this, but I don’t buy that. Garrett started his coaching career under Saban. Most of the staff has Belichick/Saban routes.

-Gettleman being retained will bother a lot here, but I’m hoping that Judge develops a culture here and has full authority to do whatever it takes to build the program as he sees fit.

-The team has moved on from Eli. I give the Giants some slack here while many posters here give them none. So many here don’t realize how difficult it is to move on from a franchise legend. A 2x SB MVP at QB, while the decline started in 2016, there was a human element here. It isn’t an assembly line. If every franchise operated like an assembly line, Ben would be out in Pittsburgh this year. Rivers would absolutely be gone from the Chargers. There would be no question about Brady being out in NE.

The 2nd Super Bowl changed a lot here & yes, it led to a stretch of shitty football. But, there are a lot of high performing franchises which have NOT gotten that 2nd title with their current franchise QB (Saints, Packers currently), Colts never got there with Peyton. Point I’m trying to make here, it is finally a clean slate and the bandaid has been ripped off. It’s important.

I think we all get wrapped up in how a team should win. What do the analytics say? What are the trends? I still believe you need to build an identity & then do it exceptionally well. It doesn’t matter how you play, you just need to be incredibly sound in however you play. The Titans are proof of this.

Free agency is very crucial. The goal should be to be shrewd & maintain cap flexibility. I hope Gettleman is telling the truth when he says he’s going to put $20M aside and not touch it.

Overall, I’m encouraged & hopeful as to what this offseason brings.

needed to go. That was the real change that would have excited me. The fact that he kept his seat of power and will now have more money to spend is a real kick in the nuts.

Hiring Judge was bold. So Mara gets some props for getting out of his comfort zone. I don't put a lot of stock in the press conference and how Judge sounded. This addiction and comfort around here to style bewilders me. At the end of the day, Judge needs to figure out how to manage and win games. And none of us have any idea if he's got the right stuff...

I actually liked the hiring of Garrett. I don't think he's anything special as a play caller, but he's going to be an excellent sounding board for this young coach. The experience that he brings is a huge asset to Judge.

I am not bullish on where this LW situation takes us...That is going to be very interesting for setting the table.

Yeah but with dg here he will sink this franchise to shittier depths, at least in your mind he will, which means you get to post here more and more. That’s a win for you.
This is about whether Barkley is the "least of our problems"

its about building a winning team, and preferably a consistent one which requires philosophy changes in certain areas...

You continue to manufacture shit that doesn’t even exist. You’re all over this thread with concerns about 2-3 years from now and Barkley’s next contract? Can we get there first? Also, it’s laughably unfair you’re using this made up fear to bash DG for the scholarships. This is the same GM who has cut players 2-3 months after he himself signed them.

Can we worry about 2020 first? Let’s build a team around Barkley that can get out of its own way first. Not Barkley’s fault. If he’s tearing shit up and not showing signs of slowing down, the giants will re-sign him. Make peace with it.
Your post basically portrays that you can only

see and react to the "next thing". If you think that is a winning strategy in any form or fashion then you have actually hit rock bottom along with the NYG...
Terps - as usual your “brilliance” shines through

Everyone knows your concept for running a team is Change the QB every 4 years (perpetual rookie contract), RBs are a dime a dozen and analytics are the begin all end all.
My question is: Name me ONE franchise that has been successful operating that way? What you are really advocating is perpetual instability.
What makes ANY good organization work is good communication from one level to the next. A good CEO type coach will have a sufficient voice to successfully work with higher ups. It will be a collaborative effort
The BIggest problem here is the HC has been inadequate since around 2012. I personally don’t think the coaching staffs of the last 8 years have not been able to develop or utilize talent.
Where we agree is whether this staff can do that.
If so the turnaround will be rapid and it will become obvious how poorly the coaching has been.
More of the same tried noises
giantstock : 1/19/2020 4:56 pm : link
We heard the same noises of positivity with McAdoo. Then we heard more of it at the start with SHurmurr. Thne to start the season we heard yet again more the same.

I can turn but it has to start with "show me." The stuff about the new coach nwo is laughable just as was when we had McAdoo. Free Agency let's see what they do.
Booms and Busts are the hardest to see their way out of
twostepgiants : 1/19/2020 5:31 pm : link
And Ive been singing the Bust song since 2013 on here and being blasted for it,

We hit bottom with 3-13 and a finished Eli Manning with a 2 yr deal worth a gazillion dollars and a bloated roster of malcontents, prima donnas and tons of big money deals and ill fitting pieces built entirely incorrectly.

I’m going counter note here again and This team is on the upswing now. We have Jones and Barkley and a stout run stopping DL. We have high draft picks and cap space. This team is being built on a much more solid foundation and is young and not weighed down by bad draft picks. We have a coach for the whole team and not focused on one side of the ball and player.

The opportunity is now. We need solid FA signings that build pass rushers and game changers at LB and they need to be young cornerstone players. 2005 should be the model where signed Plaxico, Pierce and McKenzie all under 26 at the time. 2016 should be the caution where we spent like drunken sailors on attitude and talent players and trying to fill every whole. Vernon, Jenkins, Snacks and 5 other guys including resigning JPP.

I'm just profoundly relieved that Shurmur is gone.
Mr. Bungle : 1/19/2020 6:06 pm : link
He was by no means the Giants' only problem, but he was arguably their biggest, by virtue of being an utterly inept head coach, who demonstrated no feel for the flow or dynamics of a game and gave off almost no inspirational or motivational qualities.

Thank God he is gone, as it was clear as day that the Giants would go absolutely nowhere with him in charge.

I don't know how far Judge will take the Giants, but just hearing him talk is a blast of fresh air compared to what we've had to ingest the last few years.
Have to see results

Everything can look pretty on paper or what not.

Its been very long losing and will take a miracle to shake that
imo

if "thus far" means the last month?

Then I do think in some areas that are prerequisites for doing better in the future a possibly better basis for progress as compared to the past has been started in the last month

Do I think there is an endless list of unknowable and unproveable future positive possibilities that's possible to speculate about? Yes. Always will be if you so choose.

Do I think there is an endless list of unknowable and unproveable negative future possibilities that's possible to speculate about? Yes. Always will be if you so choose.

I do believe that if the new coaches are successful we should see indications of games won by half time adjustments in the second half of next year. And we should see a game solidly won that we did not expect to in the second half of next year. If we don't then there is reason to doubt the changes may not translate to a better couple of years

Other than watching those two second half of season indicators, imo, the time to jell a new staff plus a talent deficient team composition plus a return to normal injury rates will likely translate to an unimpressive won lost record.

Patience and looking for the right indicators in 2020 will be my keys to assessing if new moves translate to an upward arc 2021-2023.

This team has been a laghingstock

I'm supposed to get excited because we hired a few new coaches?
The only thing that will make me feel better
cjac : 1/19/2020 7:23 pm : link
Is winning.
"feeling good about the state of the team" - NO absolutely not
.McL. : 1/19/2020 7:24 pm : link
Same crappy roster
Same GM
Same ownership
Brand new coaching staff that is completely unknown

Prove it to me on the field and I will start feeling better.

Until then, same old, same old.

Look, I didn't like the way Gettleman was hired, I didn't like the hire, and nothing to date should give any reasonably minded person confidence he's suddenly the right guy for the job.
Not really.

Got burned last year and it seems like that could be happening again. Who's the braintrust Mara, DG And an unproven new HC. No more false hopes for me they suck and will until they prove it on the field.
Will there ever be an offseason without optimism on BBI?
Mike from SI : 1/19/2020 8:17 pm : link
I just don't get it. Yes, eventually you will be right statistically; at some point this team will improve from bottom 5-or-so in the league. But good lord I just do not understand it.
