Speed kills

gary_from_chester : 1/19/2020 10:15 pm
To my eyes there is a huge difference in team speed between the 49ers and Chiefs compared to the Giants. I am firmly in the run the ball, stop the run, rush the passer camp but I don’t think you can do those things without enough athletic, fast players.

We have moved more in that direction recently on offense with players like Barkley, Slayton, and Engram but we look slow on D, especially at the LB spots. I was watching our BJ Goodson from the Packers and he is the type of LB we used to target - a thumper. We need more athletic fast players, and I am hoping that is what we see in the draft and with FA acquisitions.
Players look faster when they know what they are doing.

Not to confuse with 40 time (which most undoubtedly will)
To a certain extent

You need to both be fast AND to play fast. We got a glimpse of a young player with instincts in Ryan Connelly who plays fast. He is a keeper. We just have too many guys who are not fast enough (Bethea) or don’t play fast enougn (Ogletree). Yes, coaching will make a difference but the point I am trying to make is that the Giants don’t value speed at certain positions as much as they should. I know there are many lukewarm on Simmons but we need speed players in the back seven.
Again, the law of supply and demand

not only in economics but also in the acquisition and evaluation of talent.
That’s why I hated the Baker trade up

Would have been OK with him at 37. But who trades up to draft a short corner who runs a 4.52?

And is not a huge effort guy to boot
I think Baker will be very good ...

His problems had two sources -

(1) Mental - It took him a long time to grasp what to do. That why he looked lost and beaten most of the season.

(2) Adjustments - He's a natural press corner. When he played back, he couldn't react and receivers blew right by him.

He looked a lot better toward the end of the season ...

He's strong, quick and agile, tracks the ball very well . I hope the 2020 coordinator recognizes what he CAN do, and emphasize those things.

The packers defense was really just outmuscled yesterday in way you often don’t see in big time championship football games.
yes

game speed is important can't run ad think at the same time. They need to know whats going on and use instincts.

Couldn't agree MORE... Also, notice the 49er defenders:

#1 Swarming to the ball carrier

#2 Textbook & sound TACKLING
Giants understand the importance of speed, but fail at exploiting it

They have drafted for speed

Engram
Barkley
remember David Wilson?

They signed guys with speed, DRC, and others

But when you look at their speed guys, none of them compliment a ground and pound game. Even Barkely, who is by far the best of the bunch, is a home run hitter rather than road grater....
