Has there ever been a turn around in record like the 49ers?

Ira : 1/20/2020 4:32 am
2015 5-11
2016 2-14
2017 6-10
2018 4-12
2019 13-3

They went from 4 losing seasons with the 2nd pick in the draft to competing in the Super Bowl.

they

drafted really well. Their 6th rounds pick that they cut is like a star player for us.
not quite as dramatic but close and over a longer period of time

Rams:

2018 13-3-0 Lost Superbowl
2017 11-5-0 Lost wildcard

2016 4-12-0
2015 7-9-0
2014 6-10-0
2013 7-9-0
2012 7-8-1
2011 2-14-0
2010 7-9-0
2009 1-15-0
2008 2-14-0
2007 3-13-0
99 Rams

They were terrible the prior year, as were the 01 Patriots prior to Brady. None of those super bowl winning teams made the playoffs the previous year, if I remember correctly.
And Rams again

1999 13-3-0 Won Superbowl
1998 4-12-0
1997 5-11-0
1996 6-10-0
1995 7-9-0
1994 4-12-0
1993 5-11-0
1992 6-10-0
1991 3-13-0
1990 5-11-0

Why do people view the Niners as some drastic turnaround?
robbieballs2003 : 1/20/2020 5:03 am : link
They have had top picks for many years in a row but the last couple of years have been injury ridden. They were much better than their record showed the last couple of years. They were just healthier in key areas this year. Now, they were beat up defensively but most of those guys are back now. That is why their D struggled like the second half of the year. This isn't some magical turnaround. It took years of top picks to do so.
I was thinking the Rams as well

in the late 1990s. After beating the Giants in the playoffs in 1989 they averaged 5 wins per year in the 1990s (nine seasons) only to dominate in 1999 and win the Super Bowl. Also appeared in Super Bowl after the 2001 season only to lose to the Patriots.
They had this time of turnaround before

Yup. Exactly.

They have 4 first round picks on the defensive line! Buckner, Armstead, Bosa and Thomas. And Thomas isn’t even good and he was taken 3rd overall.

They signed Sherman on the cheap because he was coming off injury and while he isn’t what he was...he’s still really good.

Also helps that they’ve hit on guys like Fred Warner (3rd rounder) and that kid Dre Greenlaw who seems to fly around where ever the ball is and he’s a 5th rounder.

San Fran's 4-12 2018 record is deceptive because they lost their starting QB very early on in the season.

And recall that in 2017, after they traded for Jimmy Garoppolo, they went on a pretty impressive win streak toward the end of the season, and there were very high expectations going into 2018... that is, until Garoppolo went down with a damaged knee.

(Ironically, a team that seemed on the rise for 2018 ended up with that monster Nick Bosa because of Garoppolo's injury).

So, net/net, this team has been building in the right direction for a few years. Bottom line: This was not a 1-year turn-around.

SF was, I believe, 7-2 overall with Jimmy G before he got injured last year vs. KC.

Once he went down, their season was shot. Now he's healthy & we've seen the results.

Ummm. They only won 4 games total last season.

I think that included the winning streak after they trade for him but before he got hurt in his first year in San Francisco. This year was the first year that he made it out healthy.
Yeah, I'm aware.

Jimmy G also went down in Week 3 when they were 1-1. The year before, they finished 6-1 when they got him from NE.
the Bill Walsh 49ers
bluepepper : 1/20/2020 10:29 am : link
1977:5-9
1978:2-14
1979:2-14
1980:6-10
1981: 13-3 SB Title

Dramatic one-year turn-arounds were less common in those days. What made 1981 weird was the Bengals had a similar turn around. After years of Raiders, Steelers, Cowboys, Vikings in the Super Bowl you had two teams out of nowhere.

Jimmy G injury leading to Bosa
giants#1 : 1/20/2020 11:42 am : link
is like David Robinson's injury landing the Spurs Tim Duncan.

good analogy
The 49ers are a tough call
jcn56 : 1/20/2020 11:52 am : link
because they landed Bosa the way the did when JG got hurt, and because JG was basically dropped in their laps as a FA (in his walk year obviously, but he didn't cost them much).
Dallas also went from 4-12 to 13-3,
Section331 : 1/20/2020 12:05 pm : link
under similar circumstances. Starting QB goes down for the year, a team with decent talent gets a top 5 pick, looks unbeatable the next year. Like if Mahomes miss3d most of this year, KC gets a top pick and gets Chase Young.
Ironically wasn't JG injured against
Bubba : 1/20/2020 12:11 pm : link
KC? They were going toe to toe before him getting hurt I believe.

Same as the Cowboys in 2015 and 2016. Four wins to 13.
