Why drafting a speed receiver would help the Giants offense.

Ira : 1/20/2020 8:46 am
I'm not suggesting the Giants draft a wideout in the first or second rounds. I'm just looking at the fit that another fast receiver would have on the offense. Barkley, when healthy and given good blocking (that's another issue) is someone defenses that play the Giants seem to key on. Jones is a qb who can throw a deep ball accurately. If we find a good wideout to play in our offense with Slayton and Engram, teams will have to make a choice between playing everyone in to neutralize Barkley and playing deeper to prevent a big pass play. Either way they get burned.

This is a good year for receivers. We can probably find one who would help with mid-round pick.
Agreed. Deep draft for wideouts and

we should invest in another one. Just hopefully not too early.

Need to always be thinking how to stretch the field, even if you don’t...

Dallas or Philly.
Quick with good hands and toughness

Is my guess. That’s what the Pats live on. His who can get that short area separation and hold onto the ball. That’s what you need to convert the 3rd and 8. Most of their big plays come off of scheme and they’ve set them up —not a receiver beating a guy physically.
I thought Darius Slayton Was a speed Wr.
superspynyg : 1/20/2020 9:24 am : link
He can run the 40 in 4.35 seconds.

What we need is a Tall pal I o type Wr. One that can go up and come down with a contested ball.
I'd make Evan Engram a WR
mavric : 1/20/2020 9:39 am : link
and stop playing the silly game that he is somehow a TE. He's a tall "stretch the field" receiver that can take over a game if used to his strength. His strength is NOT blocking edge rushers and defensive ends.

EE is 6'4" with 4.3 speed - too small to be a great TE and just right for a WR. His injury history has more to do with using him as a TE rather than a WR. One of those "fitting a square peg in a round hole". Maybe Judge will finally make the right call and use EE to his strength and let the big guys play TE

EE and Slayton can really stretch the field - both fast and long. No need to go out and get another unless one falls in our lap in the late rounds the way Slayton did last year

I wasn’t aware of his speed. If this is accurate, this may be something for our coaches to consider, especially seeing KSMITH and maybe even Witten are our TEs.,

My bad - a slight exageration on EE's speed. He ran a 4.42 at his combine and routinely ran in the low 4.4's when timed. He ran a 4.38 during one of his timings. Anyway, at his size and height, it's plenty fast.
They definitely need another WR
Jim in Forest Hills : 1/20/2020 10:00 am : link
and this is the right draft to nab one. They can land a quality prospect on day 3.

However, fixing the OL would make everyone better. That has to be the priority on drafting offense (and accruing more picks).
Slayton is a speed receiver.
since1925 : 1/20/2020 10:17 am : link
He ran 4.39 at the combine. That's fast for a guy who is 5'9". Slayton is 6'1".

Our slow WR, Sterling Sheppard ran a 4.48.

Our TE ran a 4.42.

Engram has suspect hands. I don’t think he’d be dominating anybody lineup up consistently on the outside
I'd would look to draft a mid-round pick WR
rasbutant : 1/20/2020 10:38 am : link
and just take the best one available. At that point in the draft they probably have 1 of 3 attributes. Speed, Size, or Route Running. I don't care which one they have just grab the best player.

We have a nice group of 3 Wr's with Tate, Shepard and Slayton. That's a nice place to start. Also, Resign Cody Core for Special Teams.

FA WR's cost a lot of money, so this position is in a good place to draft and develop.
if you have not noticed
mdc1 : 1/20/2020 10:44 am : link
our current cast is not getting it done depending on injuries, concussions, consistency, drops, whatever. We need better choices here. Even that bozo Tate distances himself from the pack. We need to score points to win games. Last time i looked we do not have a shutdown defense.
And Engram lines up set-back on the end of the line
Bob in Newburgh : 1/20/2020 10:54 am : link
And, "omg," he motions outside and ends up turning upfield where a WR would line up.

In terms of size, speed, etc. this seems like a good idea. However, playing WR is much different than playing TE. He would be consistently matched up against CB’s who will challenge him more than the typical LB or S covering him today. The speed stats can also be a little deceiving. His straight line speed is great, but is his quickness where it needs to be to get separation on CB’s and run the full WR route tree?

In terms of quickness, I’ll give the example of our favorite player, OBJ lol. He ran a 4.43 at the combine, pretty much the same as Engram. But at least in his first four years in the league before he was injured/crazy, he was lightning quick in his breaks and had another gear that seemed to be beyond his 40 time.
Sure.

His speed was the difference in the AFC Championship game

We don't have that and we need it to stretch the field both downfield and laterally with those jet sweeps that KC runs with Hill

Or a long TE like Kitties who can "get open" even against Wagner. How many of our stubby receivers get stuffed in tight spaces, and EE doesn't have that ability when he's on the field.

shocktheworld : 1/20/2020 12:40 pm : link
he needs to be a #1 type outside receiver all around. We have Slayton for speed, we need a guy who can dominate CB's physically as well as run past them haha.

Denzel Mims is our guy. He is a game changer and we don't have that currently, so he would fit in perfectly. Plus this kid catches everything, rarely loses a contested catch, and he is a track star haha. We luck out with the crazy amount of WR talent in 2020, and have a star fall right into our laps!

Yet not a single jet sweep to Slayton or even Latimer 4.4 20 BPs, but one for what's his face street FA from Shuurmur.
2nd year Slayton

And healthy Engram provide this. Even Barkley if we get can get him the ball in open space more often.

A good system spreads the ball around AKA SF or KC . Team is fairly well rounded at receiver.
This guy would fit that mold

I think we may be better off at WR and TE than many think
eric2425ny : 1/20/2020 2:04 pm : link
One of the issues last year was poor play calling. I expect that to change now that we have a quality offensive coordinator on board. I honestly think Shurmur is a decent coordinator, but the head coaching responsibilities seemed to dull the game planning. Hence Barkley running up the middle 90% of the time.

The other issue last year was injuries and suspensions. I read a stat the other day that Barkley, Tate, Shepard, and Engram didn’t play one game together last year. I knew guys were in and out all year but I didn’t realize they never played on the field the whole year together.

Add Slayton and Kaden Smith to the group mentioned above and I think you have a pretty solid group if healthy.
