I was afraid of seeing this sticky
5BowlsSoon : 1/20/2020 1:17 pm : link
I know Judge is hiring guys he knows and guys tied to Patriots or Saban. Because Callahan has not signed, I figured he probably doesnít want to work under Garrett.....so, I figured this guy would come into play.

I know there are two other guys available with much better track records so I hope Garrett has at least a say in who this guy will be. After all, if we get another coach who is not coaching up the boys, this will affect both Garrett and Judge, and of course, ultimately us.

Come on Judge and Garrett....get the RIGHT/BEST guy for the job, not just the guy you know best.

We have suffered through some pretty bad coaching the last few years. Get this hire right Giants!
Donít you think Judge

Would run this through his OC before making the call?

I wonder if Callahan just doesnít want to be under Garrett.

Giants will interview Dave DeGuglielmo for OL coach, source confirms. @DanGrazianoESPN
had it 1st.

Expectation is Joe Judge will meet with Guge tomorrow. They worked together in NE in 2014-2015.

What does that mean for Bill Callahan and NYG interest? Iím told TBD, wait and see.

To my knowledge, no interview with Giants scheduled for Callahan at the moment. Doesnít mean it wonít happen, but sounds like Callahan has other irons in the fire. Weíll see.

So Callahan wonít even interview?! Hmmm odd, no? Unless heís dead set on joining his son I guess.

Look it up. No. 3 OL in the league with Jets. Won a Super Bowl with Pats first year that the great Dante Scarnecchia originally retired.

Oversaw the reclamation project in Indy. Jumped in last season in Miami in July when he wasn't slated to be OL coach.

Try and pry this guy free

about the guy but from the interviews and clips I see he seems like a hard nosed no bullshit, no excuses type guy. And quite honestly we need that. It might rub some players the wrong way, who gives a fuck. We need good tough OL on this roster. Guys like Hernandez could flourish under him.

"spitting tobacco juice at reporters"

Way to keep classy "Guge."

I donít know if heíd be a good hire, but considering the typical reporter covering teams these days, Iíd say willingness to spit tobacco juice at them is a positive on his resume
The knock seems to be he is 'rough around the edges'
Pheonix Orion : 1/20/2020 2:08 pm : link
Instead of just plain bad at teaching his craft.

Might instill a toughness for this OL which severely underwhelmed in that category under Hunter .
Since
PaulN : 1/20/2020 2:09 pm : link
He was here 4 years, had good results here, worked with coach Judge for 2 years, and coached Solder for 2 years, Tom Coughlin and Belechick, the coach of 2 super bowl teams, the Giants set a franchise rushing record under him with 2,518, without a great running back or pro bowl offensive lineman. With the Dolphins Reggie Bush had his best years under him. Pats were hit with a lot of injuries, including a season ending injury to Solder in 2015. He seemed to have Indy heading in the right direction, but Reich wanted to bring in someone he knew. He had the Colts ranked 2nd in pass blocking and 4th in run blocking per football outsiders metrics. I think there is enough out there and enough personal experience with the Giants and Judge, plus he has had some impressive results.

as Assistant Oline Coach for 4 years. Ties to organization as well. Heís done some decent work, and thereís apparently reasons heís bounced around a little. I donít like the story about his interaction with the Colts OLineman that had a brother murdered, but who really knows how that went down. This is somewhat underwhelming, but heíd be better then Hunter at least. Link - ( New Window )

What decent work has he done?

Year he was with Colts, his Oline was top rated in both run and pass blocking. McDaniels was the guy that had him in place there when he was hired originally. Reich wanted his own guys. Maybe the ordeal with Good got him canned in Indy.

From NFL.com

ďThe Indianapolis Colts won't hold fast with their coaching staff under Frank Reich.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports the Colts are letting go of offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo, according to a source informed of the decision. The team confirmed the move later Tuesday and announced that assistant offensive line coach Bobby Johnson had moved on to Buffalo to become the Bills' offensive line coach.

It's a surprising move considering the strides Indy's offensive line made in the first year under the new coaching staff. However, there is context behind the move. DeGuglielmo was the only offensive coach hired before Josh McDaniels turned his back on the Colts' job. Reich wants to bring in his own guy, per Garafolo.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero added there were rumblings of a possible change over the past month as Reich and DeGuglielmo weren't on the same page, despite the success. The Colts ranked No. 2 in the NFL in pass blocking and No. 4 in run blocking in 2018, per Football Outsiders' metrics.

DeGuglielmo spent just one season in Indy after serving as the Miami Dolphins O-line coach in 2017. The 50-year-old has 13 years of NFL assistant experience, including two Super Bowl championships (Giants in SB XLII and Patriots in SB XLIX). Given his expertise and the need for solid offensive line coaches throughout much of the NFL, DeGuglielmo should have little trouble finding a landing spot. Garafolo adds that Reich is recommending him to other coaches.Ē

sounds like a throwback and some do not want too much talked to in a harsh manner that might crush their feelings. Wasn't he hear during our premier rushing years with Jacobs and Bradshaw? I do remember after he left our rushing stats dropped by 30% or more. Maybe he was doing Flaherty's job.

Kind of like Todd Haley. Was considered a top OC at one time but was a bit of a head case. Maybe not to that extreme though.
He was fired by the Patriots...

He should be a sizeable upgrade from Hal Hunter. #3 OL with the Jets , a top ranked OL with Indy. Won 2 Super Bowls. Had a horrible OL when he got let go in NE mostly due to injury.

and I hope Judge is willing to look at coaches that he has never met, but have great reputations and similar coaching philosophies.

If you think about the Judge hire, he had never met Mara or Tisch, but Judge had a great reputation and was highly recommended by some of the very best football minds. Judge sold himself during his face to face interview and the high recommendations of others.

A few years ago, the Atlanta Falcons took a chance on Keith Carter as their O line coach. Grabbed him mostly on his solid reputation and work at San Jose State. Got the Falcons to the Super Bowl, and has since moved to the Tennessee Titans and done a really great job.

If you look at Zac Taylor, the young head coach of the Bengals, he did something similar. Went to the college ranks and grabbed Jim Turner from Texas A and M to be his offensive line coach. Its too early to tell how that will work out in Cincy, but clearly Taylor took a college coach who was respected as being one of the best at that level.

We don't really know what Judge is doing to evaluate possible candidates. I just hope that the biggest selling point on any coach hire is that "we used to work together".

You know anything about the OL coach at U. of Wisconsin? They seem to turn out some pretty good players.

Thoughts on a few college
YANKEE28 : 1/20/2020 2:32 pm : link
coaches that I hope would be considered for a role with our O Line

Brian Ferentz- Don't know if he would leave his Dad at Iowa, but he worked for Belichick at New England and could be considered for either O Line or Tight Ends

Tim Polasek- Current O Line coach at Iowa. Seems Iowa produces O Line talent to the NFL annually. (Wirfs)

Will Friend- as a player was an OG for Alabama. Currently at Tennessee but had great success at Georgia as well (Cordy Glenn, Ben Jones, John Theus)

Eric Wolford- Currently at South Carolina. He has been a college head coach and spent 2 years with the 49ers as asst O Line coach

Herb Hand- He is currently at Texas, but has also coached at Auburn (Braden Smith) and Penn State

For all we know, Joe Judge may have reached out to all these coaches. Perhaps known have interest in a career switch.

My point is that there are some very highly regarded O line coaches in the college ranks. Its still my belief that Coach Judge will be thorough in the process and make the right choice.

Judge never worked with Jason Garrett, and selected him based on a face to face meeting and his great reputation. Patience prevails. Lets pick the best fit at this critical position.

Is this based on anything other than pulling shit from one's ass?

Colts were 2 and 4 in run and pass block his one year there. Jets had #3 OL. NE did well but then was decimated by injury and he was let go. He apparently is more a rough personality vs. a bad OL coach. He seems to get OL playing well.

Overall step down from Callahan but probably big step up from Hunter.

"DeGuglielmo is a much-traveled offensive line coach with strong ties to Tom Coughlin. It was Coughlin who gave DeGuglielmo his start at Boston College in 1991. Coughlin brought DeGuglielmo to the Giants in 2004 and he stayed through the 2008 season. Since then, DeGuglielmo has worked for the Jets, Patriots, Chargers, Dolphins, Colts and Dolphins again, last season."
