Re backup QB, depending on contract situation, Alex Smith?

Yay or nay?
Obviously assuming

the Skins part ways.
Health would be a big concern

Didn't he have additional issues after his surgery too?

Wouldn't be surprised if he retired.
I'd be happy with either

Smith (if healthy) or Keenum from [the Washington team whose name is a racial slur] as backups
Smith, if healthy, would be great!

My question is whether Smith still considers himself a starting QB and might not be ready to be a #2 to Jones.

If he's happy to back-up Jones, what does he want in salary?

I wonder how teams feel about a QB like Smith, with the injury, versus older but more proven commodities such as Eli or Rivers. Then as you say, how they feel about a defined role as a backup...

All reports down here in DC state this guy is never coming back from his injury. He's just sitting back collecting his checks until his contract is done.

Good lord!!! He's still got a $32M......

Dead Cap hit for Washington in 2020.
That's gotta make Snyder's blood boil.
assuming Smith is healthy
giants#1 : 1/20/2020 4:05 pm : link
and that the Skins cut him, he's a guy the Bucs should look at. Makes more sense for Arians than Rivers.

As for the Giants, I'd take him over Tanney if Smith would sign for <$5M. Otherwise, I'd rather stick to a cheap Tanney and use the cap dollars elsewhere.
Smith
Sammo85 : 1/20/2020 4:08 pm : link
is very chummy with Haskins and Snyder family. Haskins has praised Smith publicly for his mentor ship and relationship with him as QB and former high pick and been adamant about wanting him around.

He’s been palling around with Snyder family off the field and in his box too. Wouldn’t surprise me if there’s an offer to stay with the org going forward.
From a cap standpoint

2020 cap hit is 21 mil. We don't even no if he will be good to go, the guy had a horrendous injury. Why would you want this situation for a back up QB when we just got out of Manning's big cap hit?
We want someone
mdthedream : 1/20/2020 4:55 pm : link
who will not be looking to take Jones job. Also one that gets paid hardly anything.
Are we sure he’s going to play again?

I thought his injury was career-ending.

Seems like it was, but his wife released a video on Instagram of him already on a treadmill and working out again.

Smith had a shoulder surgery back in 2007 that didn't fully take and was questioned by his coach Nolan if he was tough enough to play. Wound up getting another surgery and missing the entire 2008.

Could have been career ending then, certainly his arm that most have become accustomed to seeing isn't the one that the Niners drafted.

From a mental/physical toughness standpoint, Smith is second to none. I won't count him out until he himself decides to retire.
Tanney has a year left on his deal

How on earth is he a better option than Rivers? Rivers is coming off a down year but he is still a better QB than Smith without the devastating knee injury.

He was obviously suggesting Smith as an option if he was released. Nobody is trading for that contract.

You think Smith is too young, lol? He's 35, drafted in 2005
