ESPN Prepared To Make Tony Romo Highest-Paid In History

ESPN is preparing an offer that would make Tony Romo the highest-paid sportscaster in TV history, with a multi-year deal that would pay him between $10 million to $14 million annually, said sources.

Quote:
If signed by ESPN, Romo could succeed Booger McFarland as the analyst on “Monday Night Football,” said sources. Romo could also potentially quarterback ESPN’s NFL game coverage if parent Disney acquires a Sunday afternoon game package from rival Fox Sports, CBS Sports, and NBC Sports during the next round of NFL TV negotiations in 2020-2021.

For reference, the big extension he signed with Dallas in 2013 averaged about $16.4 million / year.

I know Romo has some detractors
ATL_Giants : 1/20/2020 4:16 pm : link
when it comes to his work in the booth.
But this would be an enormous improvement for ESPN.
I guess any chance to land him....
MOOPS : 1/20/2020 4:16 pm : link
as our placekick holder coach are pretty much out the window now.
I saw where CBS has rights of refusal
jvm52106 : 1/20/2020 4:17 pm : link
meaning they could match the offer. Considering where things could stand in the broadcasting rights negotiations CBS might not have football anyway...

I agree but it's really nowhere but up from Booger.
ESPN must be doing well again

Booger go away, I’ll pitch in my salary as well. God that guy is terrible.
He's the best right now
arniefez : 1/20/2020 4:24 pm : link
I don't care what he's paid not my money. But I think he's making a mistake leaving Nance - not a favorite of mine - but the perfect setup guy for Romo. He'll need a much better play by play than Tessitore. Not sure ESPN has one.
Get rid of Tessatore while they're at it too.

Must be selling a shit ton of Disney+ subscriptions.
I enjoyed him yesterday on the playoff commentaries

Especially his dig at the officials for the delay in calling the 12 men on the field penalty.
I know money talks and BS walks...
BillKo : 1/20/2020 4:38 pm : link
...but the ESPN lineup for MNF is really secondary now to SNF.

As the color man on the top team (whether it be Fox or CBS), he's seeing the best game that network as to offer that week.

He'll be paid well, but be doing some really DOG games on MNF.

listen to Booger again.
Romo is a joke
XBRONX : 1/20/2020 5:02 pm : link
First cant stand his raspy voice. Yesterday,I didn't know Conklin was a guard. He didnt know a penalty was a first down.Other times he is so obvious. Adds a few things time to time but he is nothing special. ESPN must be desperate.
Industry insiders believe he's staying with CBS.
RDJR : 1/20/2020 5:02 pm : link
His loyalty to the network that gave him a chance and his relationship with Jim Nantz are the big factors. Romo made a lot of money with the Cowboys and certainly doesn't need the money. Although, I'm the first to say that it's always about the money.

His voice does bug me. I almost wonder if he has an ailment.

Other than that, I like his insight.
Do You Ever Watch a Game?
Samiam : 1/20/2020 5:34 pm : link
Or not watch a game because of who is announcing the game?
I like Romo

and I say this as a Giants fan. He seems like a good guy with 0 douche qualities.

+1. Both booger and tessitore are terrible.
Yea I have turned off MNF as well though this year is better than last

Life is too short for me to watch football on mute like a lunatic.

Also as bad as Romo was his first couple of games is imo how good he has become. I still love collinsworth but he is easily my second favorite now. Tho I have always been partial to Aikmen and Buck as well.
Romo could be a great one he just needs
montanagiant : 1/20/2020 7:41 pm : link
To at times let the game speak for itself at times. That will probably come with experience
I like Romo
SomeFan : 1/20/2020 7:48 pm : link
but as far as the announcers go they have ZERO impact on whether or not I watch a game. Does it change anyone's viewing habits as to a game?

he suffers from TMI ...use a graphic like his predecessors but not each down and distance.
He's the best in the business..

Personally speaking I hope this happens. I rather he be on MNF which I don’t watch much of versus CBS games. I’m not a fan of his broadcasting.

Did Romo bang your mom? Girlfriend? Both?
I don't get it

I watched the KC-Tenn game and he gave us nothing special except that every series was the biggest one in the game.

But it's ESPN's money and I believe in what ever the market can bear.
I like it

Don’t really care for Romo but he’s obviously much better than the current ESPN crew which is the very bottom of the barrel. Surprised Kurt Warner doesn’t have a national TV gig, he’s pretty good on the radio.
